Holy crap, this book was fun. Okay: imagine, if you will, the Black Dagger Brotherhood, only they're teenagers, and they aren't vampires, and they don't have 400 pages each worth of angst-driven back story, and they're written with a Goonies-like combination of charm and goofiness--but instead of bikes and baby fat, they have cars and chiseled abs. Those are the Hex Boys, a crew of six demon-hunters who each have a unique supernatural ability.

Aurora Lahey doesn't know what she is, but the demons who keep trying to kill her seem to have an idea. When her family moves back to the town they had left nearly a decade earlier, an escalating pattern of demon attacks forces her to turn to the Hex Boys for protection. Though she was childhood friends with several of them, they've changed dramatically while she was living in the big city--but then again, so has she.

Characterization is a strong point with Aurora and the Hex Boys. Aurora is brave, loyal, funny, and devoted to her family. She can be awfully stubborn at times, but her heart is in the right place. The Hex Boys each have distinct personalities and speech patterns, ranging from humorously oafish to intensely standoffish. The banter between them and Aurora is often hilarious, even when they're fighting demonic forces of darkness.

Unfortunately, some of those fights happen in such quick succession in the narrative--and with so little downtime in between scenes--that I'm going to make a complaint I rarely make about a novel: the pacing was too fast. At one point, I realized I had already lost track of how many times Aurora pulled off a narrow escape and found herself injured, and that was only a handful of days into the novel's timeline. A little breathing room in between action scenes would have been a welcome relief, particularly since the attack/injury/escape patterns were sometimes a little repetitive.

That said, the concept for this novel really works, the chemistry between Aurora and her Hex Boy love interest is appealing, and the book made me laugh out loud more than once (one conversation in particular pokes fun at the proliferation of love triangles in YA literature. Seriously hilarious! This book was fabulous and suspenseful. I only wish I was lucky enough to have only guy friends in high school because WOW, that would have made things so much more pleasant. Besides, if those boys were the Hex Boys...WIN! I've a sudden urge to molest some hard rock abs. Then again, don't we all?! YUM!

Snarky, fast and furious, Demons at Deadnight by A & E Kirk is fast paced and hilarious, providing an epically fantastic read and and seriously divine experience.

Aurora and her family have just moved back to the town she grew up in. We aren't quite sure why they've moved back, but we know something has spurred this move, beyond the normal reasons. Aurora is welcomed into this small town with a demon shove and a totaled SUV, which is an excellent representation of the pacing of most of the story. While attempting to fight get away from this amazingly grotesque demon, Aurora bumps, and I mean literally, into the sexiness that is her neighbor and some of his friends. The Hexy Knights, six ab-tastic guys made of swoon, are Aurora's friends of old, all grown up. Together, they will run the gauntlet of demons in the hopes that Aurora will come out alive.

Do you think you know paranormal fiction? Well, you probably do, but you don't know the amazingness of it until you've busted out Demons at Deadnight and read it from cover to cover. Aurora is fast on her feet, which is quite important due to the hordes of demons chasing after her, cause you know, they want her dead before she unleashes death upon them. Aurora, confused beyond belief how she's to deliver these killing blows, just keeps running, attempting with all her might, not to end up dead. She'd like to be alive to keep spending time with her family and lets be honest, with the Hex Boys.

Now, I will never be able to do their personalities justice, but think 6 best friends, all boys, who's washboard abs beg for a rub and I'm sure some tongue. Beyond the hotness are the personalities. Truly witty and fun, the lot is full of the flirtatious, smoldering, brooding, thoughtful and enigmatic. Mystery swirls around their every move and action, begging...no.... PLEADING...with us to find out more about them with the hopes that maybe we can jump into the story and be apart of the Hex group. Each of them has a special power, something that they have to protect the world - beyond their muscles - from the demons at large. Together they play off each other, creating an atmosphere that rinses between intense, hilarious, heart-pounding and anger. It's an emotional Molotov cocktail I'd like thrown in my fiction more often.

Even more than the Hex boys, Aurora is a fun protaganist. Sharp with the retorts and amazingly family oriented, she's well rounded in most areas with only one exception - emotions. As a character, I love seeing her develop and expand, but Aurora has been hurt... a lot. In Demons at Deadnight, she is snarky and pleasant, but she sometimes doesn't seem to let her emotions out except in regard to her family. I personally think this was done on purpose because as Aurora gets past the events in her life, she will realize it's okay to let herself feel. But, at times I wanted to know her deepest darkest thoughts in relation to the events happening. I think that she didn't fully allow herself to feel some of those emotions, but I have a feeling that as the series progresses, she will begin to let herself loosen up and enjoy what her life has become.

With a host of amazing sub characters, Demons at Deadnight shows that books can contain families with thoughtful parents and siblings who you love, but drive you nuts and still be a completely excellent and realistic read. And, I just want to mention, Aurora's guardian angel Gloria. Love her.

Overall, Demons at Deadnight was an exciting and funny read that I can't stop thinking about. The Hex boys will forever dance in my dreams and I can only hope that one day they dance off the pages and into my room. I may have to wait, but until then I give Demons at Deadnight a 4 out of 5 and recommend it to those who enjoy Young Adult Fiction with Paranormal aspects. (less)

Action packed. Humorous. And completely awesome!

Aurora Lahey proved to be an excellent hilarious main female lead whom I loved very much. She is strong and brave and fights demons and she also has this indomitable Lahey spirit. What more can a reader want from the main female lead? And she oddly reminded me of Merida from Brave.

I loved all the characters in this book, including the bad ones. Oh and I loved the Hex boys especially. Those guys are simply awesome and of course hilarious.

I seriously loved this book :)

Who doesn't love a book with an amazing heroine and a bunch of seriously HOT guys with a variety of different personalities! The characters were all well thought out and described :) and I laughed through out most of this book.

I can not wait for the second book so I can read it :D I'm just sad that i'll have to wait for it :( I advise you all to read this book if you get the chance :D

Extremely hesitant going in. Thought "another self published book, meh". Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing, wonderful cast of characters, interesting plot, but above all- I really enjoyed the main character. She is sooo far from a Mary Sue but didn't burden us with insecurities or unnecessary angst. She's the type of girl you'd befriend in a heartbeat if she wasn't already your hilarious best friend. I’d really been looking forward to reading this book and ended up winning a copy during the blog tour (from http://www.stinalindenblatt.com/). The authors went above and beyond by checking with their post office when it appeared that my copy got lost during the cross country trip and then, despite my telling them it was unnecessary, sent another copy. They were so nice I would’ve felt really bad if I ended up not liking it and had to give it a less than favorable review. Fortunately, that’s not a problem, since I really liked Demons at Deadnight.

Aurora was strong, funny, a little clumsy and self-deprecating (not to the point of being annoying), and she loved and wanted to protect her family above all else. As an aside, it was nice to read a book where the family was in it, especially the parents, who seem to be MIA in a lot of YA books. They weren’t a nauseatingly lovey dovey family, the siblings teased and even blackmailed (typical, “Give me a ride or I’ll tell.” stuff) each other, they were pretty much a normal family. The nice thing was, they weren’t the only ones. While not all of the family situations appeared to be rosy, a couple of the boys also had obviously caring families, as well.

I also really liked the Hex Boys. While I wanted to read it pretty much as soon as I heard about it, I wondered if six guys might be overkill and was worried all of them might be possible love interests. Like I said, overkill. However, that wasn’t the case at all and it was quickly pretty obvious which guy Aurora would end up liking. All of the guys had distinct personalities and were at various times funny, charming, suffocating and protective. Oh, and like people have mentioned, they were hotties. Bonus!

A lot of reviewers don’t seem to agree with me, but the one character I really didn’t like was Gloria, I found her constant sing songy thing annoying. Maybe if she’d been a bit more serious, especially given her task, I would’ve liked her more. I will give her credit for being able to deliver a butt kicking when necessary. Oh, and I didn’t like the rhymey names for the twins Ayden and Jayden. As one myself (a twin, not an Ayden or Jayden), it’s just a personal thing but it drives me nuts. Having said that, kudos to the Kirks for not making them act or be exactly alike, fraternal or not.

While there were no huge surprises, there were a couple of twists and I think the Kirks have more than one revelation in store for us in future books, of which I hope there are several. I thought Demons at Deadnight was a fresh take on demons with a lot of action, humor and pretty much great characters all around. Despite it’s size, it was a fast read, one of those books that made me really hope for a seat on the train so I could get back into it and I totally recommend it.(less)

First, let me start by saying I've been a little wary of mother-daughter author teams ever since the debacle that is the House of Night series. But that's another review for another day. So needless to say by this 5 star review, this was not the case in Demons At Deadnight.
I loved every part of this book. The concept was fresh, the characters were fun, the protagonist wasn't an idiot (soooo refreshing in YA today), and the humor was enough to make you laugh out loud on several occasions.

I actually really liked our main character, which seems to be happening less and less in teen fiction today. Most female protagonists lately are whiny, incompetent, selfish, and make me want to strangle them for the dumb mistakes they make. That's just not the case with Aurora. Even when she does mess up, or put herself in more danger, I never once felt the urge to pommel her, simply because her reasoning was solid and I couldn't argue that I wouldn't have done the same in her situation. On top of all that, she's witty. Which I LOVE. She's got that snarky buffy-esque humor that I just eat up. And she's terribly loyal. Not to some guy she just met with swoon worthy eyes. Nope. She's loyal to her family. Crazy, I know.

That's a perfect segue into my next point. She has a family. An actual mom and dad that actually care about her and are actually THERE. Siblings she loves and love her. Holy guacamole. That is so refreshing!

Moving on to the Hex Boys. *le sigh. I absolutely adore the dynamic between these guys. Their bantering, their playfulness, their interactions with Aurora are all enjoyable and seem real. They say things actual guys would say. Not things women fantasize that guys would say. It just works. I love them all. And if A&E Kirk would let me, I'd take any one of those guys home with me (once they become legal age, of course HAHA).

This review is a whole lot of gushing that can be summed up in one word: refreshing. This book is a breath of fresh air when you're drowning in the monotony of YA fiction. Loved this book, will be reading it again, and eagerly awaiting book two.

Its hard enough being the new kid in school, having crazy unmanageable red hair....and having super hot boys live next door, who may or may not have been your elementary sand box mates and who may or may not make your toes curl and your face turn red....let alone being a magnet for foul smelling soul sucking demons. Needless to say, the chance of Aurora Lahey focusing on homework, meeting new friends and settling down may not be in the cards for her probable future.

I was happy surprised by this book. It was so funny that it made me squeal and you can almost feel the A&E's personality radiating off the page. Don't you love it when you look at a book with pretty good/great reviews, open it, and realize it is meeting your expectations within the first few chapters? I really, really liked Demons at Deadnight so I'll keep this review brief because you shouldn't waste time reading this review, you should ~~waste~~ spend time reading the actual book.

I started off really liking this book. I was turning pages as fast as possible just to see what blundering mess Aurora would make of herself next.

I totally devoured this book from start to finish. I didn't want it to end! The fact that it only cost me a dollar amazes me. I was looking for a cheap, mildly interesting read to entertain me on a budget and what I found was a hidden gem. Demon hunters aren't necessarily a new idea by any means, but the execution and the characters made Demons at Deadnight stand out among the multitude of paranormal romances crowding the YA scene.

I loved this book, it was such a fun read without the seriousness of most books these days. Its a nice change from all the dystopian, end of the world, apocolypse genre everyone is writing.
Aurora was very impulsive but such an awesome protagonist and sooo funny. I loved every single character in this book!!! The Hex boys had me howling and swooning. They're dynamics was incredible.

Seriously amazing. Seriously.

Pick up this book. Now. Get it from the library, borrow it from your friends, or buy it. But you seriously must read this book!!!!!!

My least favorite thing was how little of Logan and Jeyden there were in the book, as they were my two favorite. Especially the shocking lack of Logan. Seriously, he gets two-ish scenes all to himself!!!

If there was a book to be termed indulgent, this would probably be it. A super special heroine? Check. Who so happens to be good-looking (and a red head with a fiery temper)? Check. Who everyone wants a piece of (in different ways)? Check. A group of swoon worthy guys? Check. A group of swoon worthy guys who all (except one, and seriously, out of a group of six guys, that's pretty good) seem to love the heroine? Check.

Aurora has just moved with her family to a new town. She's less concerned about being the new girl and more about the slobbering demons that stalk her. Unfortunately she can't do much more than try to run, until she smacks straight into a few boys with special powers and secrets they're wading knee deep in. Then again, Aurora has a few secrets of her own, and trust is a precious commodity. Aurora struggles with obtaining answers, the demons trying to kill her, and not to mention an sharp tension between her and one of the guys.

There are cliches. There are massive, massive cliches. And yet, I still liked the book. It was funny and tongue-in-cheek at parts, and even though Aurora can't seem to do much, she's not helpless. And yes, okay, she's super klutzy, which is its own special cliche, but it's kind of funny and when it really counts she pulls through. She's not stupid, she has her own priorities, and it just makes me smile at the fact that she and her family are so close and so obviously love and care for one another.

Which, yeah, I'm a sucker for.

The book doesn't take itself too seriously. Aurora should probably be a gibbering wreck by now, but she's still holding strong and hanging in there. She's not afraid to run away (especially when she knows that there's nothing she can do), and she's not afraid to step up when she needs to. She's a solid main character who's quick on her feet and reading her one-upping the boys never fails to make me chuckle.

Should you give the book a try? Sure, why not. Just don't take anything too seriously. There's also the little problem of keeping characters straight, especially in the beginning. There's a lot of boys running around and it's easy to get them jumbled up, but each one has their own personality (some more unbelievable than others), which makes it easier for you to distinguish between them. The plot is nothing special, but if you're a sucker for super special girls (which apparently I am, oh well), who try their damndest to protect their family, then you might want to read this book. If you hate cliches, if you want something serious, if you want an original plot--then no, I wouldn't read this.

But hey, give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. 4 stars. (less)
