An interesting idea for an Austen character mystery. The writing however was too modern, terms of the time would have been better. A lot of research must have gone into the language called cant, which was used frequently in coversation with the characters stopping to translate. This an long, run on sentences as characters gave speeches where prose would have been better made a good deal of the book tedious. A good editor was needed here, not only for content, but also for lack of punctuation and ...more

Post Jane Austen's Emma Jane Fairfax has married Frank Churchill but the marriage is not as happy as she hoped. So when Jane is informed of his murder she wishes to know who the murderer is but is not vastly upset.
Helping a Bow Street Runner, Caleb Armitage, they work to find out who and why.
Some of the characters spoke in the language 'cant' which I did find offputting and slowed the story for me.
An "Emma" sequel where Frank Churchill is a womanizing cad who beats Jane, cheats on her, gets into illegal stuff and is ultimately murdered. (Mr. Knightley always suspected the worst of Frank and in this book he was right.) So Jane Churchill teams up with a former military man turned Bow Street Runner to try to find Frank's killer. What else is a widow to do? Oh nothing more than take in her dead husband's mistress and proceed to fall in love IN LESS THAN A WEEK with said Bow Street Runner. In ...more

Intriguing concept, and good to see a JA follow-on that isn't based on P&P.  Sarah Waldock has a deliberate writing style that can veer towards the functional, as I think it does here.  I came away feeling I'd read a "worthy" book, rather than one I'd enjoyed.

A nice continuation of Jane Austen's Emma - this story takes Jane Fairfax and makes her an engaging, likable and clever center of a story focused on murder, fraud and finding one's place in society.

I was born in the usual manner and grew up, but only to 5'4". I planned to be a civil engineer or a sports coach or a forensic scientist until I got married, but I got married first and caught a chronic illness shortly thereafter, so I started painting and writing to stop myself going stir crazy. I write what I like reading. Life's too short to take it too seriously, and I'm here to have fun with ...more
