This picture book is a trip to the beach along with a very exuberant little boy. There are salty breezes, hot sand, cool water, and plenty of sun. The little boy races to get to the water, surprised by the heat captured in the hot sand. That quickly turns to relief upon reaching the cool, wet sand. Then the waves come in, cold and big, tickling around toes as the water recedes again. It leaves behind a revealed shell, something for the boy’s toes to find. Then there are more waves, floating in t...more

I might call this a concept book, because it focuses so directly on just the sensory experience of the beach. The corresponding-style illustrations are for helping me experience just what the words are saying.

With the pictures, this might be enough to help someone who had never actually been to a beach imagine fairly clearly what it could be like (making the strange familiar). Because I have enjoyed some days at the beach, the book resonated and felt true to my memory (so it doesn't really make...more

Bright colors, sketchy - eager quality to the illustrations, conveys the excitement of visiting the beach.
text is from the perspective of a child, experiencing it with all his senses: "salty breeze tickles my nose" "ow! the sand is burning hot!" and "Ahhh, the wet sand feels good. Cool and soft."

Author & illustrator (Masamitsu Saito) & translator (Yuki Kaneko) are from Japan.

A small boy ventures across the sand into the water, describing what he sees and feels. Perfect for introducing little ones to a new experience. I gave an extra star for the unique and perfectly suitable artwork. Simple enough for little eyes, yet full of movement with a unique style for children's books.

Very nicely paced, clear descriptions of each new sensation & experience. GREAT work illustrating the water, splashing, bubbling, calm. Lots of good words for senses & feelings. Might be interesting to pair this with Suzy Lee's The Wave, and see what words the children can come up with for the wordless The Wave after listening to this story.
Samantha
A visit to the beach told in multiple senses giving readers the feeling that they are right there alongside the little boy.

Artwork is vibrant and drawn from a perspective that pulls the reader into the action. It felt like experiencing the beach through a virtual reality system.

Great seasonal read and read aloud.

The text just didn't work for me. Something must have been lost in the translation. The illustrations are SO amazing, though! I'd love to share this book without reading the words-you don't really need them-there's so much to read in the pictures. And now I need to go to the beach!

Japanese import features loose pastels as a boy enjoys his day at the beach. Child-like wonder at the ocean comes across. Several interesting changes in perspective. The most unique page is when readers get a view from the boy's sandy toes looking upwards.

Toddler and PK. Great story to share with children about going to the beach-- from the hot sand to the cool waves and the surprises within.

Conveys a great sense of exuberance through beach-colored illustrations and simple text. Emphasis on sensation of feet in sand and water.

This one got an extra star for the fun illustrations. The bright,blended/messy colors made me feel warm and cozy.

body parts, beach/ocean - The illustrations are too beautiful to be deterred by ho-hum text.
Rachel
Listen to ocean sounds while we read this in storytime, and act out some of the fun at the beach.
Lorna

Definitely a "mood book." No story line, just a child experiencing the sensations of the beach through his feet. Not that exciting.
