The basic premise is strongly, and repeatedly made, that the bulk of the economic analyses and prescriptions for Africa are made based on the nation state construct - something that really is an imposition on the "real" economy of Africa (informal, pre-modern, subsistence).
Basically "Africa" does not exist. It is too diverse, too complex.

I found he book difficult to read and if I wasn't reading it on two flights the temptation to stop halfway would've been hard to resist. The author concludes that none of the traditional economic theories are able to explain Africa's economy and mostly failures. The book is a narrative on the history of Africa, advancing the theory that it mostly consists of economic "nodes" that don't conform to modern economic theory.
