This is the first and only biography of Jeane Kirkpatrick, who became an iconic figure in the 1980s as Ronald Reagan's UN ambassador and the most forceful presence in the administration, outside of the President himself, in shaping the Reagan Doctrine and fighting the Cold War to a victorious conclusion.

A convincing anti-communism report. Will be most interesting to readers interested in those 80's wars in Nicaragua, El Salvador, the Falklands . . . . It can be reasonably argued that this book is too skewed to the right. Ex Barely a mention of the Iran-Contra Affair.

"I became convinced that a diabolical vision of the public good is the greatest horror and the source of the greatest evil in modern times."

"Things were so bad I had half a mind to get into politics." He said, "Don't worry, that'...more

Political Woman tells this parallel story—the flight of centrist liberals out of the Democratic Party and the complex chess match of the end game of the Cold War—through the intimate story of a woman who was at the center of these dramas. It also shows the price she paid for her success in a private life filled with sorrow and loss as profound as her epic achievements.

Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick's life was centered on distinguishing between the differences between authoritarian and dictatorial governments. She realized that communist governments are evil and thus impossible to change. This is a great biography of an important woman of the 20th century.History ha proven her to be correct.

The book is well-written and surprisingly comprehensive, given that it's only about 210 pages. I might have subtitled it, "An intellectual biography" for Collier does a great job of summarizing her ideas and her intellectual exchanges.

And while the book is overall praiseworthy of Ronald Reagan's first Ambassador to the United Nations, he does show us some of her "warts".

A good introduction to a great lady.

Interesting to read both the professional/political side of her life and some of the the personal/family side.

An affectionate but honest portrait of a critical 20th century figure. I wonder if perhaps Kirkpatrick was more prophetic--more "Cassandra like" as Collier puts it--about the fate of democracy in Russia that even he realized?
Andrew
