I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I find Jude Deveraux to be a bit hit and miss, but when she hits, the nails it.
I'm not sure what drew me to Reagan, the heroine. At the beginning of the book she was helpless and naive. Forced out of her uncle's house after learning that the man she loved only wanted her for her money and refusing to marry him, she finds herself on the docks, where in the real world she would have been gang raped. Luckily, this is the world of romantic fantasy, where she runs stra...more

Regan Weston has led a sheltered life. Orphaned at a young age, she's spent the majority of her seventeen years locked away in her Uncle's deteriorating house. She fancies herself in love with an English gentleman, Farrel, to whom she's engaged to. One night, not long before her wedding, she hears that the only reason Farrel is marrying her is for her money that her parents had left her and that her uncle despises her and will receive some of the money due to an agreement he's worked out with Ba...more
This would have been a much better story if Regan wasn't so immature, ignorant and ungrateful. I was hoping by the end of the book she would improve but she didn't. I could have felt sympathy for the way Travis used her if the way she acted hadn't been so idiotic. I mean Travis raped her (even if it was more of a mistake than a willful disregard of her feelings) but she never got really upset about it just angry and almost happily went to bed with him the next night. Her lack of response, made i...more
I dont even know why I like this book so God damn much. So much in fact, that it must be my all time fav Jude Deveraux book, and I reread it every few years.
I must warn you, this book has rape and I don't mean one of those forced seduction kind but the really painful, crying kind. Y'know those emotionally painful scenes you find yourself cringing from, that kind of rape scene. You will want to smack the big jerk for hurting this delicate girl, and yes, she's a "girl" and not a woman. I'm sure...more

WOW!! This 2nd book in the James River trilogy outdid the storyline of the first. If there were 6 stars, it would get it! The author's tale seems more believeable in this book; however, I just can't seem to understand completely why she gave over to these "new sensations and feelings" when she had never even been touched before, but then again, maybe that is why. In fact, Regan says that she thought she was captivated by him because he was the first to show any love or affection for her in her l...more
In high school, I shamefully admitt I read A LOT of romance novels. To this day, I'm not sure why it took me so long to figure out that the plot was basically the same. And, yes, Fabio was on the cover of almost all of these books often with shirt brazenly open and long locks aflowin' while some busty lady clung to his leg. :D

I think I'm going to rate this book as my upper limit for tolerance of crazysauce. I was entertained, and I didn't fling the book across the room, but I did get to the bit with the elephant and then think, ok, this is probably going too far.
Learning to tightrope walk in three days, though, perfectly plausible.

This "James River" series has been fun but does not compare to the Montgomery Series. This is the second book and I enjoyed it more than the first book. I did not care much for the first half of the book but really liked the second half. These James River men are not my favorite. Regardless...always fun reads.
The second book in the James River series by Jude Deveraux. English heiress Regan Weston runs away and ends up on the docks and nearing being raped. But she is rescued by American Travis Stanford. When she refuses to say who she is he ends up taking her to America with him.
I love most of Jude Deveraux's historical romances and I do like this one but it wasn't up to par with her other ones. I blame it on the characters. I don't think they really grabbed me like some of them do. It was just a fair...more

Im always surprised by how much I love deveraux's works. I love them soooo much. Sure the leading lady is a little dumb sometimes but its understandable seeing how she has been kept away from the world. Deveraux always counter balances everything perfectly. I even loved how the story jumped ahead four years allowing Regan to grow up. The only part that I didnt like was the over the top proposal done by travis. But i loved Travis sooo much that even his super cheesy impossible proposal didnt turn...more

Its the perfect story about two lovers who lose each other and find each other years later. It is aso the true way that a woman in that time gets chances to prove herself to the household that she can run it, and what happens when things go horribly wrong. IT also proves that love conquers all. This is a good book by all accounts. This is one of my fav books by her.
