Dec 21, 2011 Bonnie rated it 3 of 5 stars Recommends it for: Sophie Kinsella fans
I can never resist anything Sophie Kinsella so I jumped into reading this the minute I found out about it. (It's free on her website btw).

It's not super Christmas-y, just set around Christmas. Since it's so short, saying anything will give it all away sooo... I'll just say that it only took a good 5-10 minutes of my time and even gave me some smiles. Cute, quick read for Sophie fans.

This is a short story from Sophie Kinsella. It is in part a retelling of `A Christmas Carol' but centers on six pregnant women (the 'geese') who are visited by a spirit who shows them the `ghost of babies' future' at their maternity class.Their sense of smugness then disappears as they discover that they were not chosen because of their high powered careers, money or social status...there is a deeper message.

I think this is a clever book and I like the way that Kinsella uses the classic Dickens...more

I've never read one of Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic novels, but when I found out that this mini-short story was free on the Kindle, I decided to give it a go as it's a Christmas story.

Basically, this story uses the premise of The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come from Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" as a framework for a morality tale where six women - five of whom are demanding in their own ways about what they are expecting following the birth of their children and one who is unsure that she is goin...more

I haven't read any Sophie Kinsella books in a while, I've been saving it for next year. This ebook wasn't what I expected. I expected a man and a woman, falling in love, has romantic night on Christmas eve, typical Christmas Romance, etc. But it wasn't

It was about 6 ladies, 6 pregnant ladies, going to a pregnancy class, and someone or some spirit comes and shows them their future. Future that may or may not happen. It is up to these 6 ladies to accept their future or change it.

I thought the ebo...more

Much as I love Sophie kinsella this book was just awful!

Ok I know it's a short book and I know it was free but it was still awful. I'm just glad I didn't pay for it or I would have been asking for my money back.

Go back to doing what you do best Sophie and please don't write drivel like this again it's an insult to your legions of fans.

This cute little free Kindle offering from Sophie Kinsella will keep fans going until I’ve Got Your Number comes out, especially as it has the first chapter of that novel included. The Six Geese are Ginny (the narrator), Grace, Gina, Georgia, Geraldine and Gabby, all mums-to-be, all personally chosen by the famous Petal Harmon for her exclusive pre-natal classes and all, except Grace, feeling smug about it. Ginny’s husband Dan is useless at everything from putting the cradle together to finding...more

This inspired, clever Christmas story will warm the heart with its deeply affecting, thought-provoking meaning.

Bestselling author of an entire list of novels including the Shopaholic books, has presented a fabulous festive treat in the form of ‘six geese a laying’. This character-driven tale focuses on childbirth and how six expectant mothers are stressing about their births, all sharing the same inner doubts whilst having personal challenges to overcome. The main character Ginny is someone who...more

As someone who is horrified at the thought of child bearing and rearing, does not like chick-lit and was in fact terrified by the author's first book, I'm not quite sure why I read this. But I did and it was OK I guess. Giving the women all G names was a bit obvious and I think the Christmassy theme's a little incidental really. It's OK but doesn't mean I'm suddenly rushing out to fill my shelves with chick-lit. Who even came up with that term? Why isn't there dude-lit? If there isn't dude-lit w...more

I read Six Geese-A-Laying which is a very short story going for free in the Kindle store. When I say very short, the story itself is less than 50% of the book that is downloaded, the rest is an advert.

That aside, the story is good. In contrast to the other Christmas short I read this year each character felt real and distinct. I connected with the main character and really felt like I got a glimpse into her life.

Without spoiling the story I enjoyed it, it was fun and amusing, and I liked the mor...more

I did like this story but I didn’t think it was very Christmassy, which is disappointing as it’s meant to be. I also thought that it felt a bit rushed and that, even though it’s a mini story, more detail could have gone into it. I would’ve liked to know more about each of the women. The writing was good though and I was quickly immersed in the story and I was a little sad it was over so quickly.

I didn’t really get to know the characters so commenti...more

A light hearted short story, but descriptive enough to make you think about how your actions can impact on others. Nice Christmassy twist to it :) easy reading for anyone with ten minutes to spare, only 26 pages long! I haven't read any of Sophie Kinsella's work until this and have been recommended her books by lots of friends, after reading this I think its safe to say I will be reading a few more of her books, her writing style is lovely, just seems to flow like natural conversation! Very enjo...more

i don't like short stories anyway but as this one was from an author I like I gave it a go.

Wish I hadn't bothered, it was not Christmassy like I was expecting and only about half of the download was the story, the rest being a preview of a future book which I didn't even bother with.

The plot was basically a bunch of women at a special ante-natal class, and the final lesson is basically a look into the future for their child. Over before it started, glad it didn't take long to read.

Short Story is right. It's super short. It has an erie Ghost of Christmas Future thing going on with it too. There's a happy ending, and it made me think about how I'm too hard on my husband sometimes. Merry Christmas!

the reason for downloading this FREE e-book though is really for the 1st chapter in Sophie Kinsella's new book out in February! I've Got Your Number! She is laugh out loud! I can not wait for this new book. Kinsella is one of my very favorite authors

This was okay, I suppose. The general idea of the story was interesting enough, but it was incredibly underdeveloped and ended very abruptly. It wasn't even particularly festive. I also didn't see why Kinsella didn't vary the names of the protagonists much. Throughout just a few pages, we had a Ginny, a Gabby, a Geraldine, a Georgia and a Grace, which made it a little confusing at times.
Amanda
This little short story certainly did make you think about how small actions can lead to bigger problems. Especially when a baby is involved. But this was such a departure from Kinsella's usual fun and frivolous writing I wasn't sure if I was reading one of my favorite authors. Still an interesting read but glad this was only a short story and not part of a longer, regular book.
Tara
I wanted to download to my kindle but its only available via Amazon UK, which I dont have so I read on her website..

It was a short story alright, basically over as soon as it began. Several women going thru meeting with their midwives, talking about names of their babies, and all the insecurities that most parents are going thru right before having their precious bundle of joy!
Merissa Sheppard
This is indeed a SHORT story, more of a 15 minute break book than a lunch time book. The story is well laid out with characters that you can surely identify with, if not yourself then someone you know. I like the supernatural twist at the end and would love to know more about "Petal" but this is a stand-alone short so I'm going to be disappointed no doubt!
Book-shelf Shelf
Loved every word of this short story, but then when could Sophie disappoint? Well actually she can but not with this short story. Not so much of a Christmas story, more like a baby or pregnancy story with Christmas thrown in, but bloody brilliant none the less. A good story to dip into Sophie if your not sure if you would like her writing.

very short read, it could have been longer to have had more about the different characters and maybe about after they had their babies what their lives were like. it came with a preview of her new book "I've got your number" come sout in february 2012, this sounds like it will be a good book, so i have already pre-ordered it for my kindle.
Rebecca
This is such a cute short story by Sophie Kinsella, based on the classic story 'A Christmas Carol'. The story focuses on six pregnant women in an exclusive antenatal class, showing them what could happen during their labour. The experience in the group ultimately teaches the narrator, Ginny, to appreciate her partner. A nice quick read.
Em
A very short story set at an exclusive ante-natal class full of "mum to be" sterotypes: critical of hubby mum, working mum, nervous mum, all natural, no pain relief mum, making baby-Einstein mum and they all get a Dickensian type experience of motherhood to come! I'd say it's a good natured, easy going read over your tea-break.
Gaby
A very short story about a group of women who are going to an antenatal class and since it's Christmas, they are going to have a close encounter with the "Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come". Not really about Christmas except for the reference of the ghost, it's more about the future of these mothers if they continue to be the way they are.
Rox
This is the 1st short story by Sophie that I've read and as expected, Sophie Kinsella have a way of telling a humorous story with a valuable lesson at the end. It was really lovely and I'm not even expecting a baby. LOL. A delightful read to all to-be-mother and those who are loves to bitch about other people.
rjwitton
Not really a book! Not really even a short story! Not even sure what to call it, it was too short to do anything! Plus it was remarkably unenjoyable unfortunately, even for something so short!! I still heart Sophie Kinsella, so all is still okay. And it was kind of her to offer us something free :)
Kirstin
I was hoping this would be more of a Christmas themed short story, but it was actually just about 6 pregnant women. A few of the lines were kind of funny and they did all learn a lesson in the end, but it was a strange concept. It should have been a short story about Becky Bloomwood at Christmas!
Ines
This is a (really) short story about Christmas and what really is important and shouldn't be forgotten. Even though it's written from Ginny's point of view, it focus on six women expecting a baby for Christmas who are visited by a very particular entity on their last antenatal class.
Softymel
Un très court conte de Noël de Sophie Kinsella, dans lequel on suit une future maman, qui suit un court de préparation à la naissance très spéciale!

C'est une histoire sans prétention, agréable à lire (en 10 min!), et disponible gratuitement en version électronique.
Katie
thank goodness was only a short story. stereotypical yummy mummy characters that i didn't like and a ridiculous twist!
the only saving grace was the free sample of the new novel and its first chapter....this looks promising and one on my to read for 2012 list!
Ida
It's clever written story, that has very good characterisation. It really will take you about 30 minutes to read and it's free at Amazon at the moment. I wish there was longer story because all characters are very different and very interesting.
