My favorite of the series by a small margin. I think it was how the storyline with Hugh finally wrapped up after being dragged through all four books. Also, there was just quite bit of conflict resolution...all tied up with a pretty bow. I'm into that kind of ending :D Connor and Ilysa had quite the complicated relationship, and I wanted to strangle both of them at one point or another in the story. By the end, though, I was a fan of both. I loved how the other couples were brought into the plot ...more

The Chieftain was everything I love in Scottish Romance: a dedicated-to-his-clan-laird, a likeable heroine, a great plot, and a villain worthy of the title.

I normally don’t like heroines like Ilysa, and yet I loved her. What I mean by that is, Ilysa is very passive, and very. . .calm. I normally like my heroines to be spunky and sassy and to fight with the hero a bit. Ilysa wasn’t like that at all, but she wasn’t a boring doormat either. The autho

This whole series has been a quick and enjoyable read. This book, in particular, was my favourite in the series.

Connor’s combination of obliviousness as well as stubbornness towards Ilysa, her feelings and her gift created a really fun and exciting story. All of the miscommunications caused by Connor’s pigheadedness, while causing Ilysa heartbreak, made for a great story. I loved watching his awakening, where Ilysa was concerned.

I really hope Margaret Mallory writes more books in this series.

Connor is clan chief of the MacDonalds of Sleat. His clan’s welfare and future depend upon his every decision, especially when it comes to choosing his future bride. A chieftain cannot marry where his heart leads him, not even when his choice is a fierce lass whose loyalty to the clan and her chieftain is unparalleled.

Ilysa has spent her life loving Connor MacDonald from afar. She has always been the type to work in the background, never gaining recognition. But the time for keeping silent is ov

I think this was the best one of the series. After watching Connor struggle in the first 3 books, he finally gets his HEA! I was sorry to see it end, I was hoping Lachlan would get a story of his own... The twist regarding Ilysa's background was great!! If you read the first three, then this one is a MUST.
I truly enjoyed reading "The Chieftain. This book had everything
I look for in a highland romance. The characters are engaging and
the story is heartwarming, fun, and enjoyable..
If you love historical highland romance
I highly recommend this book.

Return of the Highlanders, Book 4

Connor MacDonald is the Chieftain. He has the responsibility of keeping all of his people safe from those that strike against them. A part of keeping them safe is marrying a woman that comes with a strong alliance. Connor has always known love would not be in the cards for the Chieftain and that never bothered him until now.

Ilysa is the sister of Duncan, one of Connor’s faithful friends. She is also a seer. Ilysa is in love with Connor but she knows a relationshi

I still liked this book, but it was probably my least favorite of the series. I was up and down at times about the romance and felt a bit disappointed by the way things were wrapped up. The ending itself felt very rushed. After four books of build-up, the fight between Hugh and Connor was resolved very quickly and wasn’t as epic as I’d been hoping for. Also, I was pretty annoyed when (view spoiler) ...more
The Chieftain
By Margaret Mallory
Return of the Highlanders Book #4

This is the final book of the short series.
Connor became chief of the MacDonalds of Sleat when he came home after fighting in France for five years to find that his father and older brother had been killed in the Battle of Flodden and his evil uncle was running the clan into the ground by only looking out for himself. The clan voted in Connor as chieftain and ousted his uncle.

His uncle is now gathering large numbers of pirates and
I absolutely love this series and The Chieftain was a fabulous read. Margaret Mallory is now on my 'auto-buy' list, well she has been for awhile now. Mallory writes everything I love about a Scottish Highland romance.

If you love a man in a kilt then you shouldn't pass this novel by.

Not my cup of tea. I want to read about the romance between the main characters, I especially do not want to read about the hero lusting after every other woman. Yuck.

My synopsis:
Twenty years ago his mother cursed his father after she found he had born a child with another woman...

"Mo Mhallachd ort! (My curse on you!) May your seed dry up, Donald Gallach, chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat, so that no woman shall bear you another child. May your sons already born by other woman die young. Three times 'round, and the spell is bound."

Prologue - Dunscaith Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland 1496....

Conner and his mother, Catriona, are very close. He watches one night as she circles the fire chanting and cursing his father, Donald Gallach Chieftain of the MacDonalds, for betraying her. A friend, Anna, comes upon the scene and begs her to take the curse back. Catriona swears her husband will pay when she leaves him for another man. She leaves her children with Anna to look after them as the children always stay with the father, the

I think it's safe to say that Margaret Mallory has a new fan and a completely hooked one at that. The Chieftain was filled with stellar characters, surprise connections, terrible betrayals and all of the emotional turmoil they bring and just a lovely romance to top it all off. Like I said. I was hooked. Even if I wanted to strangle a Highland warrior now and again.

The gist is that Connor is a somewhat new Chieftain who's lands are at risk and who is in need of a strong alliance with another clan

I thought it was going to be Duncan's story that won my heart in this series, but it turns out that it's Connor's book that is my favorite. Aye, the chieftain of the MacDonald clan finally gets his turn at love, and it comes in the form of the woman who has been right in front of him the whole time.

Ilysa has been in love with Connor for as long as she can remember. She has healed him when he was hurt. She manages his keep. But in his eyes, she was always just his friend's younger sister. He neve

The Chieftain is the 4th book in the Return of the Highlanders series. This book is about Connor, the current Chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat, and Ilysa, a healer and the younger sister of Connor's best friend. This series follows the stories of four MacDonald warriors, Ian, Alex, Duncan and now Connor. Connor is, as the title suggests, the clan's chieftain.

Ilysa is Duncan's sister, and she's had steamy dreams about Connor since the four men returned from France. She's a healer, and she has the second sight, and she's learned at the skirts of Tearlag, the clan's seer. Connor, on the other hand, doesn't see past the frumpy clothing and tight head cloth that covers Ilysa's pretty hair, and he does NOT b

Trying to stay alive is a full time job for Connor, Chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat. He has more enemies than he can keep track of with spies surrounding him at every turn. The most cunning devil of all is the uncle who wants to take everything away at the cost of Connor’s life, but he is not going down without a fight. I have had this one on my TBR list for a long time. I kept putting it off again and again for no real reason. I was a fool because this was just about perfect. I liked the hero and heroine, as well as the secondary characters. Catching up with the cousins was also very fun. I have missed this series so much. The two main characters have known each other forever and you as the reader know Ilysa loves Conner. But watching Conner fall in love and his struggle with it touched my heart. You also get ...more
(P) I was looking forward to Connor. But it turned out to be a book like the others: mixed feelings because it was at times very silly. Then too much time was spent on strategy to defend the clan and not on the h/h relationship. I liked that Connor was starting to notice ilyssa, but hated the scene where he didn't recognize her because she had a nice dress on. He is a warrier with keen senses and good eyesight. That was just plain stupid and as far from romantic as it can get. Big downside. He s ...more

Oh what a lovely, lovely book! Conner wants so much to do what he should for the clan, how can you not adore a guy that puts the needs of others before himself? Especially one in a place of power. And Ilysa is a warrior in her own right. I really liked it!! Excellently written and researched, but that's to be expected since it's by Margaret Mallory. I rooted for Ilyssa and Connor (but mostly Ilyssa because I truly felt for her and was happy when Connor FINALLY realized that she is the one for him).

Another triumph for Margaret Mallory.

So here we are with the fourth (and final?) story in this wonderful Scottish Romance series, featuring the last of the returning warriors, the chieftain himself, Connor MacDonald. I had a great time with this book; watching the stoic and steadfast leader finally setting out on his way to his own slice of Happily Ever After. Especially after seeing him put duty first for so long. It can't have been easy watching his t

I am torn about this book, why? Well Margaret Mallory ends her fantastic The Return of the Highlander Series with a spectacular story. Each page fulfills the promise she has made with her previous books. The story is full of tension, both in battle and in the bedroom. Passions ignite, promises are made, lost, forgotten and reforged.. and yet.. Margaret Mallory ENDS this series. See my dilemma? When you fall in love, passionately and irrevocably in love, you never want to let go and with this boo ...more

I've been waiting for this one ! In the last book of the Return of the Highlander series the cynical Connor meets his match in the lovely Ilysa. With this last book Margaret Mallory has woven a story that will keep the readers spellbound.
Connor McDonald plans to use marriage to make a powerful alliance that will help him defeat his enemies. Ilysa knows that her love for Connor is in vain. She has nothing to offer. No powerful alliance. No riches. Only her humble self and her undying love for Co

There's nothing I love more than a good historical romance, but add in the hunky highlanders and I'm hooked!

Connor was never meant to be the chieftain of his clan, but when his father and older brother are killed, he must step up and take their place. Other clans are planning to take over his lands with a brute force that Connor must stay on his toes to fight off. Not knowing who he can trust, Connor sees that his marriage must be one out of political necessity to calm tension between his enemy
