This initial volume of the new Suicide Squad book starts out rather ho-hum. The art is very pedestrian (it never rises above that level either -- but it is serviceable), and half the team is comprised of some pretty whack characters that I didn't really care about. Also, there were some weird choices in character redesigns that threw me off a bit. Deadshot now looks like the protagonist from the Dead Space games, and it definitely is not an improvement over his classic costume. It's just needles...more
Thanks to Batwoman, I'm spending more time at the Comic Shop and this series keeps catching my eye. The premise is that jailed super villians are coerced into joining a secret/black ops group that works under the direction of the government on missions that the government will, of course, deny all knowledge of if they are caught. In return their sentences are reduced, if they survive. Kind of like Mission Impossible - with crazy-ass super villians who have questionable morals and sanity.

Think what you will, but I’ve always argued that it’s the bad guys who get all of the fun. Why, isn’t it the bad guys who get to have flexible morality, so much so that their agendas are constantly in flux? They get to preen around, making the audience boo and hiss, and if we didn’t have criminals then where would all of the do-gooders be? They’d be bored, and we’d be equally bored in reading their monthly comic book titles. Yes, the baddies are the ones who inevitably make the hero a much more...more
I don't ever really tell anyone this because I don't want them judging me, but I really love the tv show Supernatural. Actually, I don't tell anyone that because I don't have anyone to tell because I'm a hermit who never leaves the house. I don't have guilty pleasures, jus pleasures. Or maybe they're all very guilty, I just don't care.
Anyway, Adam Glass is a producer on Supernatural so I was actually pretty excited about him being attached to this book. Along with having some seriously great B-...more

I have to admit that I'm curious to see how future issues of "Suicide Squad" will play out. Will I remain a dedicated follower? That remains to be seen.
The Bad: From the start, "Volume 1: Kicked in the Teeth" is a bit disorienting, and (for me) that feeling never quite went away. Obviously, this is supposed to be an action series, not a philosophical tome, but short missions, randomly presented back-stories, chaotic battle scenes, and plot twists intermingle in a jumbled way that made it harder...more

The original 1980s Suicide Squad written by John Ostrander (often in collaboration with his late wife Kim Yale) is one of the most underrated comics of its era. DC's New 52 relaunch of Suicide Squad brings back the qualities of that series and updates it for the present. This is the way a relaunch/revamp should be handled. Mixing characters from the old Suicide Squad (Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark) with other DC villains (Harley Quinn, Savant, Black Spider) works really well here. Desp...more
Amanda Waller has a secret team called Task Force X. Made up of super-villains and called the Suicide Squad, Task Force X does the assignments that others won’t. With internal bombs planted within them, Task Force X isn’t working for their country but their freedom and their lives. First they are assigned to stop an outbreak of a virus and then to stop a prison riot at their base of Belle Reve. The Suicide Squad’s third assignment might be the most difficult when they are forced to hunt one of t...more
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The 'one member dies every issue' schtick got a little old, but I think they're going to ease up on that. Plus I don't think many of them actually died. With the exception of issue two (zombie mission *roll eyes*), I enjoyed their missions. The gore was a bit excessive sometime, but this is an adult book about super-villains turned government assassins. I was surprised at how involved I got in the members who lasted more than an issue. Deadsho...more
This new comic book series is the second one I indulged in after Saga. To be honest, what really brought me to this series was the fact Harley Quinn is on the front cover in a different presentation that how I am used to her in comics. I consider this a good thing since Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City have proven the changes to her character to be quite entertaining. In the end, I am glad I picked this series up.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.
Another disclaimer: I wasn't all that familiar with the Suicide Squad prior to receiving this. I mean, I understand who Harley and Deadshot are, and I know about the Suicide Squad, but I wasn't familiar with their past exploits. Which should work out well, since this is a reboot, right?

I want at least one of three things in a comic book.
1. I like to care about the character or characters. Or possibly just care about what's going to happen to them.
I couldn't have cared less about what happened to these guys.
Butbutbut...what about Harley? Everyone loves Harley Quinn!
Yeah. No.
I guess it was supposed to tug at my heartstrings when Deadshot was with the little girl, and I'll admit my Inner Mom went awww for a few seconds.
Then I rolled my eyes and punched her in the face.

I know I should not judge a book by its cover but I did on this series. Ryan Benjamin's cover art for Suicide Squad, Vol. 1: Kicked in the Teeth is a beautiful masterpiece that shows off Harley Quinn's new outfit. I must add that it is very appealing and revealing but I wish the book revolved more around her than Deadshot.

I suppose in truth I only read this for Harley Quinn, so in that regard I'm fairly pleased with the book. The rest of the suicide squad members are a mix of cool and irritating so I was thankful for focus being mainly on Deadshot and Harley. Though I'm not that much of a Deadshot fan, and would take more Harley Quinn any day. I had a bit of an issue with the inconsistent art where someone's face changes or their build is slightly different from the previous panels. You get use to it but it defin...more
I was initially biased against Suicide Squad, since it was replacing Secret Six, one of my favourite pre-Flashpoint DC series, so I avoided picking up this trade for a really long time. Eventually I caved in, and I'm very glad I did. Suicide Squad is great stuff. There is an interesting story here, with very unpredictable characters who can actually go through some harrowing stuff in each issue without being fine at the end of it like more mainstream characters (a similarity shared with Marvel's...more
Harley Quinn was the character that drew me to this comic as I adore her in Batman. I love the entire concept of this team as I prefer dark, dubious anti-heroes to the clear cut do-gooders.
Harley and Deadshot provide the main backbone and drive for the story which is great as I find them fascinating characters. There is a wealth of other and new characters to to entertain you. King Shark and Black Spider are personal favs.

I read these as individual comics. I really enjoyed the Harley Quinn character. She is a character that has always existed in the periphery for me and I was looking forward to a more focused storyline. Her background and how she came to be the Joker's girlfriend/lover/puppet? was cool. The only reason that I gave this series 3 stars instead of four is because the focus shifted a bit from Harley to Deadshot. I am no longer having this series pulled each month strictly because of that. If this wer...more

A New 52 first collection which I might have read even were I not reading any I find in the library, simply because of how bad I'd heard it was. Yes, it opens with scenes of torture porn, and has sexed-up two female characters who were much more interesting beforehand (not to mention making a mess of Deadshot, and not even really doing King Shark justice compared to Secret Six). And yet, it's worth noting that while far from great comics, it's still much more readable and entertaining than most...more
Not only am I a Chicago Cubs' fan who married a St. Louis Cardinals' fan. But I'm also a Marvel guy who married a DC girl.
When DC launched their "New 52", I decided to pick up a few of the titles my wife was sampling. I have been pretty big on Suicide Squad. The story-telling isn't always pitch perfect, but the team is anything but dull and every issue usually leaves me with at least a couple pages that result in my jaw dropping and thinking "I can't believe they just did that!"

Man, the first three pages? Awesome - stylish, minimalist, I got the feeling the writer really know how to expect more from his audience.
Then we get (a) super-dumb exposition to introduce everyone and their power set/trademark (like most New52 books seem to be doing - hitting you over the head as if you've never read a superhero book before), (b) obligatory junior-grade fake-out, and (c) edgy first mission that turns out to be just weepy-angsty.

“Suicide Squad” is like Marvel’s “Thunderbolts”, a team of baddies who’re put together and sent on dangerous missions. They even share similar plot points such as nanite bombs implanted inside each team member set to detonate unless they do what they’re told. There’s also a Hydra-like organisation included, calling themselves Basilisk, saluting and shouting “Hail Basilisk”, ready to kill themselves at a moment’s notice.

This wasn't a fantastic comic collection, but I still got quite a bit of guilty-pleasure out of it. There's a nice tie-in to the "Joker's Face" story in Detective Comics; a nice bit of origin ret-con for Harley Quinn. Adam Glass handles Harley and Deadshot very well, keeping a lot of their pre-New 52 characteristics intact.
Was it just me, or were there some pretty heavy misogynistic undertones in this book? I wasn't to keen on the treatment of women in this volume. In general there seemed to be...more

Despite the changes to Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller, I was very pleased with this reboot of the Suicide Squad. I was a huge fan of the original series as a teen, and was not disappointed by this new incarnation. It has more fast paced action than I remember from the original, however, the drama between characters is still strong.

I was a fan of the original John Ostrander - written Suicide Squad was the last comic book that I collected; when it was canceled, I dropped the hobby. The premise - get supervillians to handle the jobs too dirty for traditional methods, and if they don't come back, no one's going to miss them - was interesting. BUT the exploration of their psyches and motivations - showing that they were human without "having them see the light" really caught my attention.

I was never a huge fan of Suicide Squad. I think Secret Six served the same purpose, but better, and with more interesting characters. That said, this reboot does its job. The new team, centered on Deadshot and Harley Quinn (with the always entertaining Killer Shark) plays a little darker, but new character El Diablo makes for an interesting counterpoint. The story actually surprised me a couple of times, which for a comic is impressive, and I'm looking forward to reading more.
This book brings together all the misunderstood Vigilantes and Villians to be used as pawns by a government agency. I found it intriguing that everycharacter's evil actions and motives are Important to the plot from leading evil doers to the taken for granted side kicks. The twist and turns are as exciting as the impossible missions seems to be. Can not wait for next book in series. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

This was a surprisingly good title and also one of the rare anti-hero wins. Harley is fascinating and I loved reading her backstory. The present story was jumbled at times and I know there were tie-ins happening to other titles, but they were hard to remember. I think that's my own fault for reading everything though and wouldn't be confusing to the average reader. I'll be excited to read on.
The best graphic novel I have read this year. Plot is simple and something we have seen before but the characters really make the story. Harley Quinn is fantastically drawn and is given perfect quips and the perfect mixture of sexy/crazy...at least for her character. The New 52 collection has been hit and miss for me, but this one is top of the list hit. I have already pre-ordered volume 2.
The Dirty Dozen with DC villains. The team is lead by Deadshot who will turn on a teammate at the drop of a hat, Harley Quinn is the complete psychotic of the team, Diablo is seeking redemption for past crimes, and Shark King likes food. While the story is all over the place but the mixing of these personalities is what makes it an enjoyable if short read.
I read this for two characters in particular, Deadshot and Harley Quinn, and let me tell that every one on the team is a bad a**. This book is meant to be a fun read, and it gets the job done well. It's a great thrill ride. Amanda Waller no longer has the same weight, but she's still the great character we all know and love.
First off, I was very happy to win this as a First Reads! Thanks!
I have never read anything Suicide Squad before so this was new to me. Harley Quinn has always been one of my favorite characters. Loved her dialogue! She can be so crazy, it's funny. I really loved seeing her background with the Joker. I do love the villians, so this was great for me. The artwork was awesome! I would love to read more.
