In the past decade, the number of Americans who consider themselves runners more than doubled—in 2008, more than 16 million Americans claimed to have run or jogged at least 100 days in the year. Though now running thrives as a convenient and accessible form of exercise, it is no surprise to learn that the modern craze is not truly new; humans have been running as long as t ...more

This is an ambitious book that doesn't quite work – a global history of running since before the beginning of recorded history. Part of the problem might be Gotaas's 'day job' as a folkloreist, which might account for his tendency in the 1st half of the book to string together stories and tales in fairly unanalytical manner: he tells a good yarn but he doesn't really give a sense of how and why running manifest itself in such different ways in different places with such different meanings – alth ...more

The book has good moments but perhaps takes on too big a topic to be consistently good but its best moments for me is when it considers the spiritual dimension of running and the various studies of the mental and physical benefits of the sport when the running boom got underway in the 1970s and 1980s.

just ok. nothing greatly revealing. lots of stories about running in various cultural contexts throughout world history. no great center plot line but a decent overall read if you really enjoy history in general and also run.

Trying to cover so much ground that it leaves almost every aspect with little space to really go into it. Some interesting chapters on early running, and also how state-controlled athletics nearly ruined the sport.
