This is an ambitious book that doesn't quite work – a global history of running since before the beginning of recorded history. Part of the problem might be Gotaas's 'day job' as a folkloreist, which might account for his tendency in the 1st half of the book to string together stories and tales in fairly unanalytical manner: he tells a good yarn but he doesn't really give a sense of how and why running manifest itself in such different ways in different places with such different meanings – alth...more

Trying to cover so much ground that it leaves almost every aspect with little space to really go into it. Some interesting chapters on early running, and also how state-controlled athletics nearly ruined the sport.
