In the summer of 2012 I received a beautiful signed copy of A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman as a courtesy from the author. I sorely regret that it has taken me so many months to sit down and read this delightful story of the Amish of Pebble Creek. What a joy I missed by not reading it early after receiving it. Well, here is what I thought.....

Ms. Chapman has woven a beautiful tale of the Amish in their gentle ways. In developing Miriam King, she shows that even though the Amish usually
A good story about an Amish community in Wisconsin. A widower and his daughter, who has not spoken in 3 years move to the Pebble Creek community and struggle with their past. A school teacher struggles with decisions she has made for her future.

It’s very unusual to find a romantic story with compelling main characters, heartwarming and moving back stories, well written second characters and side stories, a little suspense, a little funny side, and a beautiful message of love, grace and new beginnings. A Promise for Miriam has it all. This is the story of Miriam, a 26 year old Amish woman who by Amish standards should have married a few years ago and should be raising her own children instead of teaching other people’s children. She has ...more
A Delightful Read!

I have read several books by author Vannetta Chapman and I have enjoyed them all. A Promise for Miriam did not let me down.

I fell in love with the Characters in this book. Who wouldn’t be concerned for Gabe who lost his wife to death 3 years ago. Would he ever get over losing his wife? Could he, would he, be able to move on? His eight year old daughter Grace captured my heart. She is simply adorable. Miriam, the school teacher, has never married but she is content with being

PROS: Wisconsin setting brings something new to the genre; great characterisation; engaging sub-plot

CONS: None!

Gabriel Yoder decides to uproot himself and his daughter and move to a new community in Wisconsin, hoping that this will help them to move on from the death of Hope, his wife and Grace’s mother. The Pebble Creek community is far more conservative than they’re used to – no indoor
"A Promise for Miriam" by Vannetta Chapman is the first book of the The Pebble Creek Amish series. The book was a fast paced and yet perfect paced for the story. There was plenty of conflict for the story and much like real life there seem to be one thing after another. Some conflict was a major thing while other seemed to be pretty minor compared to the others. To me that was part of the charm though.

Eight year old Grace Miller does not speak. It is up to her new teacher, Miriam King to find the reason and help Grace find her voice.

Grace’s widowed father, Gabe, seems to oppose Miriam’s efforts as well as efforts of his new community to assist him in rehabilitating the derelict farm he has purchased.

When Grace is lost in a snow storm, Gabe realizes that he has to accept help, from the community and from Miriam. In doing so, he finds himself doing battle against a real estate tycoon who is try

I loved it! What a wonderful story! The characters seemed so real to me- Grace was a really sweet girl, felt so bad for her loss, but she was strong and overcame her obstacles. Miriam was a great teacher who really cared about her students.I enjoyed reading of a day at an Amish school. I liked Gabe,he was a great father, but he like, held his feelings in, and others around him had to read his mind, esp. Miriam. I did like the way he stood up to Byron Drake!

Heart touching story, sweet miracles to ponder and beautifully written. The characters are life like and personalities are cleverly and clearly identified. Personally, I was impatient for certain things to happen, and was delighted with the way Vanetta handled their resolve. Well done, Vanetta - I'm looking forward to reading another of your writings. What do you suggest?

Another winner by Vannetta Chapman! I really enjoyed reading Miriam and Gabe’s story and particularly liked Vannetta’s unique characterization. It was if I lived alongside them in the story. I’m looking forward to reading more books from the Pebble Creek Amish Series.

No spoilers here! You're going to have to read it. And I highly recommend it.

Good, clean, quick, enjoyable read.

From the first page, I knew I would find sadness, yet an enduring strength in the pages of A Promise For Miriam!

… and the moment Grace was introduced, it was clear that there would be difficult times ahead, to say the least. But I was compelled to keep reading.

Miriam, bless her heart, snagged my attention right from the beginning… a helpful, caring teacher, who wasn’t looking for more than she had, but I knew she deserved much more and hoped she would find it.

I have read several of Vannetta Chapman's book and I have loved all of them. She knows how to grab your attention and hold you till you finish. A Promise for Miriam is the first book in The Pebble Creek romance series. I did not have any problem following the story or the characters. I loved meeting the community of Pebble Creek, Wisconsin. Vannetta Chapman has a knack for drawing such realistic characters - I always feel they are friends I've known for a long time. In this book you'll meet school-teacher Miriam as she welcomes a new student, young Grace Miller. She and her father, Gabe, have moved to the area to start fresh after the death of Grace's mother. Both Millers are crippled by their grief: Grace is literally mute, but Gabe also struggles to express his feelings, a ...more

Miriam loves teaching in her Pebble Creek Amish Wisconsin community. Gabe moves there for a new beginning with his daughter who lost her voice when she lost her mother. Tourism may move into the community so Gabe and Miriam are part of the team to discuss with the Amish and English what is the best way to go. I really enjoy reading the author's style which puts me right there at the events and ties my world to the happenings in the book.

First off let me say first that this A Promise For Miriam is now my all-time favorite Amish novel. I don't know if it was the likable and real characters, the different location (Wisconsin), the storyline that was a little different than the average Amish story, or what it was...

One thing I like about this book is that Vannetta Chapman shows us that even though the Amish dress alike they are just as individual in personalities as the Englischers. Miriam is outspoken at times and you will love ho
I am an avid reader of Amish fiction, and I always get excited whenever Ms. Chapman writes a new story, because I know it's going to be a story with a positive message and wonderful characters about the culture that I love to read about "The Amish."

With "A Promise For Miriam" I found myself totally hooked on the story at the prologue. An Amish husband sitting at his wife's bedside as she passes away, and their five year old daughter crying for her Mamm. Heartbreaking to say the least, but then w

As anyone who follows my blog knows, Amish fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I've read lots of great books by several great authors. There are many similarities in most of these books -- not a bad thing at all -- but it is also nice to find the little differences that distinguish the various series or various authors.

A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman has all the elements that make for a great Amish story. Miriam King is a young Amish school teacher in Pebble Creek, Wisconsin. Sinc
Story Description:

Amish school teacher, Miriam King loves her students. At 26, she hasn’t met anyone who can convince her to give up the Plain school at Pebble Creek. The newcomer Gabriel Yoder steps into her life, bringing his daughter, an air of mystery, and challenges Miriam has never faced before.

My Review:

Miriam King and Esther Schrocks taught together in a one room schoolhouse. The two teachers looked similar in appearance, had the same temperaments and could have passed as family. Esther

A completely enjoyable read, with wonderfully realistic and believable situations, and characters.

Wow! This was in my mind the perfect vacation read, charming, with a touch of humor, yet with a realness to it that drew me in. I absolutely loved the characters, and thought that they were well built. I especially liked how in this Amish Romance I got to see things from Gabe's daughter, Grace's prospective too! Which was different in an enjoyably refreshing way. This is the kind of book that I was

The latest offering from Vanetta Chapman offers much to please lovers of Amish fiction, celebrating the best of their culture and their faith by depicting the power of family and togetherness in the face of life's difficult storms. The first in a three-part series, A Promise for Miriam offers a solid beginning, by an author who excels at creating heart-warming characters.
