In the Land of Blue Burqas
by
Kate McCord
The author speaks the local language and has interviewed and conversed with hundreds of Afghans, both men and women. She listened to their stories and lived among them. And in the midst of all of that, she found Kingdom responses to the beliefs Afghani Muslims hold to be true.

I liked it, but also I didn't like it. I liked learning about the lives of Afghan women, and I liked the comparisons between the warrior Mohammed and the peaceful Honorable Jesus. But I didn't like how much of the book was devoted to preaching about Jesus. I would like to have heard more about the daily life of Afghan women. The author had the perfect opportunity to observe details of life in Afghanistan and share them with us, but instead devoted most of the book to preaching about Jesus. I'm g...more
Author Kate McCord (a protective pseudonym), experiences the call of God to leave her comfortable life, sell everything, and travel to Afghanistan. Immersing herself into their culture and learning their language, she sets out to share the love of Jesus, and to empower Afghan women in the midst of their often oppressive culture. In The Land of Blue Burqas recounts her experiences over a five year period as she encounters both women and men in Afghanistan, hears their stories, and demonstrates ho...more
I really enjoyed Kate McCord's honest depiction of her life as a cross-cultural worker.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wonders what it is like to live and work cross-culturally in the developing world, and in the Muslim world in particular.
The author did a good job of inviting into the homes and minds of the Afghans. We get to view the world through their eyes and some of their perspectives are surprising and even disconcerting. However, the Afghan people are not demonized; on the con...more

This was a very interesting read! The author (whose actual name is being protected) spent five years living in Afghanistan to help and minister to the women there, and this book covers many of her experiences. As she carefully and cautiously spoke of the Honorable Jesus to others - knowing she could be arrested for trying to convert others, and if anyone else converted they, too, could be arrested or worse - she reminded herself and the reader of the many differences between the loving God of th...more
Fascinating first person account of living inside the Muslim culture of Afghanistan as a Christian single woman. Woven throughout are the conversations the author had with her neighbors, friends, and strangers that revealed her deep Christian faith in the stories she told them which challenged their world view with the truths of her own "Honorable Jesus"--a prophet they claim to revere, but know very little of.

Beautiful book that made me cry as well as encouraged me in my own faith. Very accurate depiction of Afghan women, the troubles and the pain that they have faced from living in a place racked with war, and continue to face from a very strong Islamic influence upon them. There is no exaggeration here, I have seen this first hand.

I highly recommend this book. Not only did it give me a chance to better understand another culture, but it also helped me better understand the Bible. The context of Afghanistan is much more similar to the context of the Bible than our world. Through reading the way Kate McCord described Biblical stories to the Afghans, I was able to better understand them myself. Reading this book also made me so thankful for the freedoms I have. I find learning about other cultures fascinating. It opens my ey...more
Ok, I admit it. I judged a book by it's cover. And all that I thought of the cover was exactly what was inside. It was stark, foreign, ancient, scary, simple, primitive and beautiful.
The author spent 5 years working in Afghanistan. She learned the language and worked along side all kinds of Afghans. Being a woman, she spent most of her time with women, and spent most of her resources trying to help them and their children. As a Christian she had to be careful and yet was able to find many creati...more

This was a thought-provoking book and different from most. I enjoyed reading the author's personal experiences as she shared about her time in Afghanistan and the challenges she faced in making friends, gaining acceptance and (covertly) sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in ways that were relevant to the Muslim culture in which she was immersed. I'd highly recommend it, especially to anyone who has ever lived in a culture other than their native one.
This book was a delight to read. I didn't want to put it down. The author's insight into Afghani culture demonstrates humility, patience and perseverance. Her ability to demonstrate God's love in meaningful ways and to bring the Biblical messages to life for her Afghani friends and colleagues has challenged me to reframe how I present God's love to my neighbours in the Arab world.
The style is very "bloggish" -- seems more like a series of dispatches about various issues. This was disconcerting at first, and it seemed like a chronological account would be easier to follow. But the style grew on me, because it allowed the author to explore the cultural and religious divide between Americans ( esp. WASPs) and Afghani Moslems in various categories. Ultimately I think the style worked well, and her accounts gave me a new admiration for the Afghan people, and perhaps a better...more
In the Land of Blue Burqas is an interesting book about an American aid worker that lived in Afghanistan for five years and how she interacted with the Muslim people. She was able to present an inside view of Afghanistan that most foreigners aren't able to see and presents to the reader the many complexities involved in helping this country.
What a great book about life in Afghanistan, the suffocating grip of Islam, and the liberty of the 'Honorable Jesus'. It challenged me to look closely at my own faith in Jesus and consider questions that, as a privileged Westerner, I had never asked myself. This book deepened my faith and I recommend it to anyone who desires to be challenged spiritually.

I have the utmost respect for Kate and the work that she did among Afghans. My biggest issue with this book was her tendency to repeat herself. I think this work could have been much shorter, and packed more power, had she chosen to organize it differently.
This was a very eye-opening and thought provoking book! The writing was easy to read and heartfelt, giving a glimpse into the lives of Afghan women. The author, working with humanitarian aid, was able to befriend women and take part in their conversations, telling of her faith at the same time. My review: http://booksmusicandlife.blogspot.com...

A very worthwhile read. The author writes from her years living among the Afghani people and learning their culture as well as their struggles and sorrows. Living as a single middle-aged Christian women in a Muslim culture, she had a fascinating opportunity to talk with and live among Afthani women and hear their stories. She writes very simply but with great respect for the crushing hardship these people live under while speaking to them about the Honorable Jesus Messiah, whom she follows.
