Honoring God in Red or Blue: Approaching Politics with Humility, Grace, and Reason
by
Amy E. Black
Politics
isn't a four-letter word.
Everyone's been atthatdinner party. The conversation takes a political turn. The arguments start, the atmosphere grows tense, and all that remains is a hopeless stalemate and an awkward silence. Makes you wonder . . . is thoughtful and productive dialogue about politics even possible?

What got me into this book was my concern over the lacuna of Christian voices showing civility in American public discourse. It is easy to find examples of strident, unloving and even damaging rhetoric parroted by people of faith who genuinely care about the direction of the country. Christians seem to have little trouble stating convictions on issues, but we rarely articulate those convictions effectively. We often sound our victim-whines, complaining that we feel shut out from political power....more
Not politics! Don’t ever talk about politics with family and friends right? Well this book talks about it and is an easy guide to navigating those awkward dinner table talks! This is a good instruction book with easy ways to talk about politics in a balance way. I like how the author shows that all Christians should approach these talks with respect and show love in our responses no matter if we agree with the other person or not. Her examples will help you debate issues in a considerate manner....more
A simple and well written book from the American system of government but people worldwide can relate to it. Politics is not a subject that Christians really give much thought to or talk about, this book engages in it in detail and helps you understand how you can glorify God in politics and how you can use your faith to inform your political views. It doesn't have to be all fists up when we are talking about politics, there is actually a way to do it in love. Get this book for an enlightening e...more
Sections of this book should be required reading at least for religious sorts. It's a non-partisan book that's about engaging in politics with civility. Written by an academic for a general audience, it's a simple read that could benefit from having a little more meat on it, but keeps to its strength of directness
This is a particularly timely book in this contentious election season. But it's not a voting book. It's a really helpful, formative, foundational, principled look at how Christians can engage politics in a godly manner from either right or left. As a pretty non-political person, I learned a ton aboutt he workings and purpose of government as well as the ways in which I can think rightly and interact with it.

“Perhaps God even impresses on the hearts of two Christian believers political views that seem, from our limited perspective, direct opposites.”

“If indeed we only have partial knowledge, it follows that a Christian perspective on politics should begin in a context of humility and love. As limited humans, we don’t have all of the answers. Instead of arrogantly proclaiming our political views, we should approach this subject, as all others, with awareness of our limitations and reliance on God’s love and wisdom”
