The Large Family series of books are just such a delight, I've grown up with this, and always enjoy rereading them. They are such a true reflection of family life, (well of my family life anyway!) and so I can relate to them. This particular story is about thinking you need to be thinner, which can trouble many people, but the humour in this is a more lighthearted way of addressing this. Each Large Family story subtly conveys values of acceptance, working together and also, consequences. This bo ...more

A Piece of Cake by Jill Murphy is an enjoyable read for children in Key Stage 1. The story is about a family of Elephants, Mrs Large, her husband and their three children. Mrs Large believes she is getting too fat and decided that the whole family should exercise more and eat more healthily. The text is quite short and humorous and there are a number of beautiful illustrations throughout that help to create the story. After a few weeks of a healthy regime, a parcel arrives from Granny, a homemad ...more

"I'm fat," said Mrs. Large.
"No you're not," said Lester.
"You're our cuddly mommy," said Laura.
"You're just right," said Luke.

Cerita yang kocak tentang Ibu Besar, seekor gajah yang berniat diet. Mengingatkan saya akan bapak, "Ngapain diet biar kurus, gajah aja tetap gemuk walau makan rumput". :))

A Piece of Cake is a picture book about an elephant that goes on a diet. The main characters are Mrs. Large, her children and her husband. The setting is the Large's household and the point of view is from a narrator. The story begins with Mrs. Large telling her family that she's too big. All of her children and her husband disagree and tell her that they like her just the way she is. But she doesn't buy it. So she puts all of them on a diet. Everyday, the eat a healthy meal and then do some sor ...more

Another Large Family book by Jill Murphy - and it will be my last!

My criticism of the whole series have been that they are written from the parents perspective, rather than the kids. This continues with this book.

This book introduces such fantastic ideas to you child as:
* Being fat is bad
* Exercise is terrible
* Eating healthily is a chore
* Cakes are something to be craved and then binged on

So if you want your child to grow up with body dysmorphic disorder and an eating disorder then regular read

A Piece of Cake was a story about an elephant family. The mother thought she was too fat so she tried to get her entire family to go on a diet. The baby elephant said to the mom one day that "maybe elephants are supposed to be fat". She wouldn't let her family watch tv or eat fattening snacks. Instead, she wanted her family to not sit around all night so they would go on jogs through the park. One day the grandma sent a cake to the family and she couldn't stand it any longer. She went to get a p ...more

I love the large family. They are so laugh out loud funny! This is a great story to share with little kids.

This book is appropriate for grades prek- 2nd grade

Elephants think that they are too fat so they decide to go on jogs and a diet as a family. However, when a cake is sent to them to enjoy, it tempts all of them to jump off of their healthy routine and go back to the way things were.

I could use this book as a science lesson to show exercise and healthy eating habit and how they affect your life.

Also, if there is a kid in the class that struggles with their weight, this book would be a great way

When I first started working with children this family became my favourite to read to children! There's never a dull moment with the Large family and there is something real about them that adults and children can identify with which I feel gives adults and children great pleasure in reading and listening to! When Mrs Large decides that her and her family should eat more healthily, she puts them all on a diet and the whole family are expected to exercise! By the end of the story they show that d ...more

A classic Jill murphy book. Based on a elephant family and a weight conscious mother that involves her whole family in her new healthy eating regime. This book would be suitable for KS1 and could be linked to healthy eating science topics.

The illustrations are brilliant and the text is quite humorous for adults and children. I would suggest reading it through before sharing with children as the topic can be quite sensitive.

Sneaking food when you are on a diet. This is a humorous book about families hiding and sneaking food from each other.
