by
Julia Quinn (Goodreads Author)
Anne Wynter’s job as governess to three highborn young ladies can be a challenge – in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. I'd been wondering how old Daniel is. Which was why I skimmed through the pages of Just Like Heaven to find some clues. Turned out Honoria is twenty one years old, five years younger than Marcus. Marcus and Daniel are at the same age, and that would be twenty six. Since the first and the second book of Smythe-Smith quartet series are set in the same year, Daniel is still twenty six when he came home to England. Why am I babbling about his age? I had hoped he's much younger. Because that...more

Daniel Smythe-Smith, Earl of Winstead and his friend Hugh Prentice, get drunk and foolishly end up in a duel. Honour dictates that they face each other, but having sobered up and wised up, both realise they need to aim wide. Though Hugh's shot hits Daniel accidentally, it is superficial. But Daniel slips and his shot sees Hugh badly injured, nearly crippled. Threatened with death by Hugh's father, the Marquess of Ramsgate, Daniel escapes to the Continent, in fear of his life for the nex...more
If you're looking for a sweet historical romance, this is the book for you
It's entertaining, funny and witty, it has a great romance with characters you'll love and who love each other like crazy
I just have one problem with this, it somehow gets too sweet for me in the second half of the book
I know, I know, what's wrong with sweet? Nothing, but I personally don't like those sugary endings. Maybe sometimes I love them, but most of the times not. This was in the most of the times category

Love love love the cover art. Bright blue dress and sweet pink heels. ohhh it's cute!!! I love the way Julia Quinn makes me laugh, cry and sigh with satisfaction.
It was so good to finally wrapped with a good romance. The epilogue make me continue my reading till evening. I was glued and I can't take my eyes of this wonderful story.

After a slow start I really got into this book. It was a sweet love story and I do like how Daniel loved Anne from the beginning although he didn't realize it. It was something new for him and came on gradually and was then just there. I liked it.
There was a little bit of ping-pong conversations but not enough to annoy me.
It is definitely a fast read and a nice way to spend an afternoon. It isn't one of my favorite Julia Quinn reads, that is When He Was Wicked, but was still an enjoyable read.

Had some issues with it, like I did not like the love/lust a first sight thing and the first 2/3 of the book was just blah.
I would've also liked a relationship between the hero's mother and the heroine (the mom just instantly accepted the heroine for her son without meeting her and it was unbelievable because the hero's family didn't know anything about the heroine).
Overall, it was just okay--it kept my attention especially the last third of the...more

Julia Quinn is like crack to me.
I finish one book, and I'm instantly in withdrawl... think, reads all eight Bridgerton books in, like, a week, then cries for more kind of crazy-obsessed.
But, here's the thing: I didn't think A Night Like This was going to do it for me. And I was sad, especially so, given the first book in the Smythe-Smith Quartet, 'Just Like Heaven' was, in fact, my first Quinn. And I adored it.

What an utterly beautiful surprise this book was. Huzzah JQ! I can't tell you how much I've missed reading her work. I'll be honest and say I haven't been overly impressed with her recent work over the past few years. Her Bridgerton series was her strongest work for me hands down, everything following that hasn't been the same and I've always felt something was missing. But this....this was a wonderful surprise. I saw that special quality that shined in her earlier work come out in this. This ne...more
The second book in the Smythe-Smith series is one of the feel-good romances of the year. It picks up where the last one left off, at the annual family musicale first made famous in Quinn’s beloved Bridgerton series. Once again Quinn does what she does best: she takes a standard Regency plot—governess with a big secret that puts her at risk falls for gallant aristocratic hero—and adds the touches that makes the story uniquely and delightfully hers. Anne is an immensely sympathetic and likeable he...more

Another good book by Julia Quinn
Anne is governess for three young girls. She is beautiful, smart and have a secret. She had been forced to cover for someone in the Smythe-Smith Musical where she caught the sight of a gentleman she have never seen before.
Daniel has recently returned from exile -Italy-. He has been running for 3 years until he was finally allowed to come home. he comes during the Smythe-Smith musical and decide to watch it backstage where he's eyes fall on the covering governess -...more

Much like the first in the series, Just Like Heaven, this is a charming and easy read. The Smythe-Smith Quartet is shaping up nicely to become a must-read - which is something that doesn't often happen for me with this type of romance novelish book. A Night Like This is a light-hearted and thoroughly charming novel with two very likeable and compatible leads in Daniel and Anne (and scene-stealers in Frances, Elizabeth and Harriet.) I have always been a Julia Quinn fan and with this book, I am reminded of why I loved her work. A NIGHT LIKE THIS goes back to what Quinn is known for. It opens with a fun scene with Daniel Smythe-Smith, Earl of Winstead and sets up the reason why Daniel left for so many years.
When he returns, Daniel is a changed man. After all, having your life threatened can do that to you. Time has done him good because he has matured. No longer the impulsive and brazen youth, Daniel shows a great amount of g...more

Meh characters with an external conflict that doesn't really work. I read these for fluffy, historical wallpaper, but this was REALLY wallpaper-y, with very little historical basis for how people would actually act or talk (really? An earl's just going to marry a governess because he wants to and, oh well, screw the ton? Uh huh.). Daniel acts and sounds surprisingly young for his age and Anne is just boring, which is sad considering her life story up to that point. Too many characters are introd...more

However, while trying to get by as best she can, Anne sets eyes on Daniel Smyth-Smith, who was once banished from the country. She doesn’t know who he is at the time but she cannot keep her eyes off him. Anne was a wonderful protagonist who is full of secrets. Once upon a time an English aristocrat called Daniel returned home from three years of wandering abroad. You see, he was hiding from another aristocrat who wanted to kill him. Ok, never mind. As soon as he returned he saw a beautiful girl. "She was petite, small in that way that made a man want to slay dragons".I don't doubt she looked like this:
I am a picky reader when it comes to romance. I think this stems from when I was younger: I would read, quite literally, anything and everything that even remotely resembled romance. I read novels, I read Harlequin/Silhouette, I read them all. So my best guess is that I truly got burned out on romance novels at some point, which is when I was dazzled by fantasy and sci fi.

I loved Daniel. Yes, he was sweet, slightly naive for a 26 yr. old, but it was nice to read about a hero who wasn't a jackass for a change (just because he had a title and could be). He was sweet, romantic, and handsome...what more could I have wanted? It's true this book was much closer to a fairy-tale than JQ's other books, but don't we all need a little bit of fairy-tale in our lives?

I read this because I read the first book in this series. I know, stupid reason right? Especially since I only found the first one to be okay too. Well, I wanted to give it a try to see if it might be better. It isn't.
Again this is another light read. I wanted more romance. By more romance I do not mean more sex scenes but more interactions between Anne and Daniel. I know he's a good looking guy but once again I'm not left swooning after him. Maybe it's because he spends most of his time chasin...more

Daniel Smith-Smythe comes back to town and becomes quickly intrigued with Anne Wynter, a mysterious denizen of the town. She’s governess to three very individual young ladies, and you are highly entertained by the strange situations she finds herself in as a result(hiding amongst tubas, trying to talk one of her charges out of thinking they’re a unicorn, etc). Daniel makes up his mind immediately to pursue the mysterious Anne, come hell or high water. And it comes quickly.

This is the second Julia Quinn's novel I read in English (first was Splendid). Before, I always read the Indonesian version, whether it's from Dastan or Gramedia (there are 2 publishers for JQ's novels in Indonesia) and I have to honestly say that Gramedia translates better than Dastan in term of writing style.
I've always love JQ's novels because of the witty conversations between the main characters they had. And in A Night Like This, it seems like taking the most part of the novel. Not that it...more

I adore Julia Quinn's novels! Each book brings something fresh, new and addictive. She fills her stories, like this one, with lovable characters, witty sass and a plot line that sweeps you off your feet and takes you back in time. From start to finish, you're unable to close the book, and before you know it, you're at the end, saying goodbye to friends.

This was my first JQ book & I LOVED it!!! I read a LOT. About a book a day & I have to say I thought this book was extremely refreshing!!! It gets kind of tiring to read romance novels that are 1) focused completely on the sex aspect because I personally don't understand how you can fall in love when you're surrounded by lust & don't actually TALK to the person. 2) most are just tooooo angsty & that's all you read about. #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand style, competing on the the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British an...more
