I read this every day - along with "My Utmost for His Highest" and of course - the Bible.
Streams in the Desert is a powerful collection of meditations, Christian writings, and Scripture, and remains one of the most beloved devotionals of all time. This updated edition, however, offers even more, including Scripture, Subject, and Contributors Indexes.

This book has many reviews with 5 stars in Goodreads. I'm picking it up, however, because it's one of my "100 Christian Books that Changed the Century", not because I'm looking for a daily devotional.

This book was indeed a stream for me during a time of great tribulation for me. I had gone through great loss of health and relationships and surroundings and everything familiar. It exposes you to so much knowledge and wisdom each day. So many insights and with prose and poetry ontop of it. An example of poetry borrowed.

One day while I was waiting to photograph a wedding, I found a 1925 edition of this book on a shelf at the country club. I sat down to read it just to pass the time until my bride was ready. It is a daily devotional with so many gems;complied by a Christian missionary who served in China. I had to have that book!!! My wife and I read this every day. It was truly a stream in a desert for us during a time of great strife and persecution. This devotional book helped to bring us through those "desert" times and through God's word, propped us up when we thought that we'd fall.

I have just started this devotional book based on the number of times it is quoted by Beth Moore in her Praying the Scriptures book. It is a year's worth of devotional material accumulated by Mrs. L.B. Cowman who was living in China with her missionary husband during the early 1900's. I'm finding it very worthwhile and inspiring. Some of the poems she adds are archaically worded, but they connect me with my godly grandmothers and their words. I use it to start my daily quiet time.
Each day includes some brief writings from one or more individuals along with a Scripture verse to tie the days writings together.
Used this as a devotional throughout the year. I hadn't realized when I started it that there would be multiple writers per day. It actually took me a few days to get used to that. I would be following the train of thought and then it would end and another would start, which was somehow on the same subject.

Ms. Cowman has compiled one of the finest devotionals I've ever read. It seems to have a supernatural sense of my need on a particular day, every year (I'm on my fourth year of reading it). Keen insights on suffering, stamina, storms and setbacks are just a sampling from her book. It nourishes anyone who has endeavored to serve God with encouragement and strength for the journey.

This book is only decent as a devotional. If you're looking for a book of scriptures and meditations on them, this is not the book you want. But if you'd like to read spiritual thoughts on various subjects (that aren't very long), this is a good one. I'd say it's the "milk" the Word talks about. Very light spiritual reading, but pleasant as well. Not every day, but several times a week we will read something and it'll be profound.

I graduate early this Dec. and I'm having a hard time choosing a college because I'm very scared to be away from home, on my own, starting a career. Even though I'm not a 2010 graduate, my youth group leader got me Zondervan's Graduate Survival Kit. It comes with an NIV Compact Bible (which I now keep in my purse and bookbag) and Streams in the Desert for Graduates.

I first read this book of daily devotionals when I was recovering in a Rehabilation hospital. I really got a lot closer to God and the book helped me to understand better why suffering is a catalyst to growing more mature in my relationship with the Lord. I still read the devotional by email 7 days a weeks. My original book fell apart after using it to pieces. :-)
A wonderful, wonderful book. The author was seriously led by God to put this together. If ever you're feeling down, confused, troubled, depressed, about to lose all sanity...THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO READ. This book helped me out so much during a very dark time of my life. It's really a gift and inspiration from God's heart.

This is the best devotional I've ever read. It's the perfect combination of short stories, quotes, poems, songs and Bible verses. It has insightful, convicting and uplifting commentary in between. Every time I pick it up, I hear something I needed to hear. I love it!
This is my favorite devotional to date. I have used it regularly and still go back to it often, particularly when I am in need of encouragement. I have also given this as a gift many times. I usually have 1-2 extra copies on hand just to share when the time is appropriate.
This edition was a gift from my son Warren a year ago. It has been inspirational and a pleasure to read a devotion each day for the past year. I would recommend this to all my book club friends ... a great way to spend a few minutes in the word each day.

I remember my roommate raving about this in college, and I wish I had picked it up then. But alas, I've only just discovered it, and I love it! It has applicable daily devotions that always seem to speak to me at the right moment.
My favorite daily devotional. I didn't realize I was in the "desert" until I started reading this book; finding I could relate to it and be truly blessed and encouraged by it. Each entry has nuggets of applicable inspiration. Try to read this everyday!
A wonderful companion in suffering, written by Mrs. Charles Cowman (Lettie) in 6 dark years of her suffering, and made available to comfort others with the Spirit of God from which she drew strength. I'm rereading it again in the midst of a difficult season. I find the more I'm struggling, the stronger the resonance of this work.
I love this book. It is concise and profound. The readings always seemed to be just what I needed on each day. My poor copy is quite worn and covered in notes. It is also taped together. That's how much I love it.
I've been reading this book for about 10 years. It is my favorite devotional book. Appropriate for every day but especially healing when you are going through a time of suffering or confusion.
This is a stunning devotional. I'm picky about devotionals too, because some of them are so cheesy. But this one is passionate and purposeful. You can jump in anywhere too. It's great.
My favorite devotional out there! Received it as a gift 9 years ago, and still read it constantly. It's lessons are perfectly applicable to our everyday walk with the Lord.
If you only read one devotional selection a day, then this is the one to read. Your life will be enriched in unimaginable ways by reading this devotional every day for a year.

This book has been a great encouragement to me many times. It is a devotional that is well put together and easy to read. Pick it up and read small portion and be inspired!
This book helped us a lot through a hard time with one of our children. God spoke to us so amazingly. We've known of it to help a lot of others too.
