This was not what I exactly expected. Based on a couple of scathing reviews on GR, I thought this was going to be some intense non-con. I'm even questioning the BDSM categorization. First off, let me state, I am very prejudice here. I don't like gangs. I find them despicable and want to treat them not too different than vermin. Yes, I get the mentality of why kids want to join a gang. That's a symptom of a larger societal issue which is neither here or there. I mention this only because when I read a storyline which includes gangs in it, I just roll my eyes and want to kill off all the characters. Call me the exterminator. The characters - Rachel - what can I say about her? She's not exactly TSTL, but she does do a few things that make me go, "WTF!!! WOMAN STOP! THINK!" Then again, any woman who lives in a gang infested area who doesn't take self defense classes, I think, what a dumb bitch. That's just me. What I liked about Rachel was her mixed feelings and guilt in the consent of being "raped". This begs the question, can you really rape the willing? I say no, but that's because well, rough sex turns me on.

Yes, this story of rough sex turned me on, especially when Rachel was held down by Zachary. While the other two guys were assholes and abused Rachel, I guess I'm a sick puppy because it turned me on too. Her resistance did it for me. When she responded to Zachary's "abuse", she felt all mixed up. I didn't. I was aroused. Then again, I like the capture, force theme when I read it. In real life, it may be different (if the guy was hot or not). I found this story to be a light to medium non-con story with maybe a little bit of Stockholm syndrome mixed in. I recommend it to BDSM readers who enjoy the non-con with a bit of romance added.(less)

I have mixed feelings on this one. It was definitely a raw story and unapologetic for the subject manner. If a person has any non-con or rape triggers, they probably shouldn't read this one. I would NOT consider this BDSM in any fashion. I think Rachel and Zachary are two very effed up people who try to make the best of a bad situation. A really bad situation.

The author did keep me intrigued and it was a rather quick read - which I was grateful for.

I don't have a problem with a non-con/dub-con story. In fact the questionable nature at the beginning is fine, as is the gritty and unvarnished rape scenes, but I did have problems with two things: characterization of the FBI agent and miscommunications of the protagonists. What do you normally get from a book about being raped?! Well, go figure! Who would want to experience such thing! But this book made me feel EVERYTHING that Rachel (wait! what was her family name, again? *shrugs*) was feeling! Hell I'd so rather be dead after all that shit! If not only for Zachary Kant...

That being said, 2 STARS for this dark erotic book. It was indeed just an okay read.

But still looking forward in reading the other two: Trust in Me and Hear Me. :)

If you liked the tied man or captive in the dark; you will love this short read.

This is very short but mainly because I couldn't stop reading it.

The first chapter steals you, grabs you and pulls you in.

This has mostly sex in it, mostly not consensual. It's impressive that Warren managed to write a book that contains so much sex and violence and yet still gave it a strong and intriguing plot.

Talk about your disturbing, gut-wrenching stories; this one will stay with me for a very, very long time. Before you touch this book - heed the warnings from the author. It's much more gritty and raw than anything I've ever read, and it makes no excuses for the explicit and graphic descriptions of the non-consensual situations depicted within.

It's not an easy read, though at less than 100 pages, it sure is a quick one.

This was disturbing and may require you leaving your comfort zone. However, it's no different than what I've seen in the movies, and I've watched worst. For some, romance and erotica takes you away to another fantasy world that you can escape to, but this story is different in the form of dark erotica that goes against the rules for some. With saying that, my thoughts are as followed:

Firstly, rating this is based on the story as a whole. Although the sexual scenes were graphic and sometimes disturbing, there was still a plot to the story that brought the main characters together. Zachary, a FBI undercover agent and Rachel, a woman taken against her will by a group of gang members who had rape on their mind as well as a plot to blow up a school. While trying to uncover more information, Zachary has to try and protect Rachel, which he is unable to do at times. The opening of this story sets the pace for the rest of the story which gradually becomes very aggressive, intense, and emotional. What this means for Rachel, she has to do what she needs to in order to survive her surroundings. It was basically do what I say or be killed.

Secondly, obviously you can't escape what is being done to Rachel as it is degrading, abusive and graphic as it's being told from her POV. However, she did have her moments with Zachary, as their feelings and emotions tried to develop within the situation; this isn't your typical love story. Throughout the story, Zachary struggles with his inner self as he is at times unable to keep Rachel safe.

As the author goes outside the box depicting this story with both characters, it works within its own twisted way on how its being presented. Again, apart from the sexual graphic content, there is still a plot and a storyline that is being unfolded that may or should not be over looked. Some readers may still have a curiosity to read it though warned. But as strongly advised by the author, be forewarned. Everyone is different with how they receive and digest a story such as this.

I cannot stress enough that people should read and heed the warnings on this book. This is not for anyone who cannot handle graphic depictions of sexual violence. When I say graphic I mean detailed descriptions of rape and physical assault.

Wow, this was REALLY fucking intense! I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it. I guess the 2 star rating was because it was just a little too intense for me, but it shouldn't be a reflection of the writing. I think it was very well done and I was honestly trembling at some points and squeezing the life out of my Nook.

(view spoiler)[I thought that this novella had a pretty interesting premise. Kidnapped young woman in the hands of gang members with intentions of rape, torture, and possibly murder. Meets a gang member with a bit of a conscience who rapes her in order to protect her. Initially, this rang a bit false with me because 1) she lies passively to be raped and 2) the "gang member with a bit of a conscience" sounded forced. Therefore, it was to my utter delight and complete shock when I learned of the "identity" of Zachary. Now, the "gang member with a bit of a conscience" made sense, and the whole, "I raped you to protect you" made more sense because he had to have a good reason to present to the other gang members to bring her under his "protection" while doing his job. As for her lying passively to be raped, on second thought, it does make sense if she was terrified for her life and of further pain: "I could think of this like a bargain: my body in exchange for his protection. It seemed like a worthy trade to me, if he could hold up his end."

I thought that Zachary's reaction to what he had done to her was quite believable, and was intrigued by how the author might work this into the story to create a believable HEA/HFN.

Then the author ruined my anticipation by tossing in a bit of fem-dom scene. It...didn't fit. It seemed out of the blue. I was utterly bewildered. Rachel, despite having been traumatized with kidnapping and rape, was ready to jump into bed with her rapist-with-a-conscience as well as to dominate him sexually. Not to mention, she was also ready to have him practically move in for more sex. o.O That wasn't the impression of Rachel I got in the first chapter.

Moving on.

Despite what may have been a stupid move of Rachel to open the door to the two "cops", I really couldn't blame her because I could totally see myself doing the same thing - forgetting to ask to see the badges first.

I was stunned when I saw Zachary at the house Rachel had been taken to because I had thought I'd read that he had quit his job due to his remorseful guilt at having raped a young woman for his duty. I suppose that I could have misinterpreted his "I quit" as being "I have already quit" instead of "I will quit".

And the ending? The ending was rather sweet but maybe a bit disappointing? Well, I kind of liked it, especially the sandwich part. :)

I liked the bits of humor. For some reason, I found Rachel's occasional dark observations entertaining so this got an extra 0.5 stars from me. I liked the premise although I was disappointed by the execution of it. The plot didn't make much sense. There were too many unanswered questions. For example, how did the nephew of the head of the gang become an FBI agent supposedly undercover in order to bring the said gang down? I would think that one or the other side might have doubts as to his loyalty. Much of the novella wasn't focused so much on the plot but on the frequent sexual and physical abuse that Rachel suffered so it almost felt like it should belong in my porn-sex-with-no-plot shelf. Rachel and Zachary falling in love with each wasn't entirely believable, and very close to a Stockholm Syndrome relationship. Nonetheless, the feeling that it was a Stockholm Syndrome relationship wasn't very strong with me so in this case, the author managed to make me suspend disbelief enough. While I didn't find Rachel very relatable despite the 1st person POV, I did end up feeling somewhat for Zachary. I like reading about romanticized FBI agents. Unfortunately, I had to agree with his recriminations and personal assessment of his adequacy. He absolutely sucked at protection detail. (hide spoiler)]

Some other WTF moments

Rachel thinks, "He hadn't raped me. I'd agreed to it." Am I mistaken in thinking that consent under duress is still...rape?

During their consensual sex scene:
Zachary: "Condom"
Rachel: "Birth control"
Me: WTF? What about STI's?

In short, I liked the humor, and I thought there was promise in the premise. I had problems with the execution. I thought that the writing was a bit sketchy, especially on the details. The rape and violence didn't have much of an impact with me, which I think was due to the writing. The fem-dom scene seemed out of place. The ending may be a bit disappointing to some people. The novella was skimpy on the plot, which didn't make much sense anyway. There were maybe a bit too much sex and few too many WTF moments. And Zachary, while a sympathetic character, turned out to be bit pathetic. (less)

This week I will be going to the dark side and reading three books in Skye Warren's dark erotica series ...I think. I'm not so sure after reading Keep Me Safe. I'm not even sure that I was kept safe while reading this book. What do I mean? I've read some very dark books in the past, but this one is quite different than any I've read before.

I'm not even sure that I was kept safe while reading this book. What do I mean? I've read some very dark books in the past, but this one is quite different than any I've read before.

There is sex on the very first page of this book! Holy erotica, Batman! Sex. On. The. First. Page. But not just any sex...rape. Consensual rape! What an oxymoron! I have to admit that I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book. It is not for the faint heart. I'm convinced there has to be a training or workout of some sort that is required prior to reading this book....maybe a baptism or spiritual anointing. Book those therapy appointments in advance, if you plan on tackling this one. This book contains harsh physical and emotional abuse, rape, and human suffering as I've never read in any book before. I have never had such a difficult time getting through a book before due to the content, but I had to keep reading, hoping for a HEA at the end. Did I get one? Well, that is in the eye of the reader. I'm really not so sure that I got my HEA, but at the same time, maybe I did? I just can't tell. I can't wrap my mind (which is now warped, I'm sure) around it.

Let me start with what I liked about this book. I really liked that the story was told in Rachel's point of view. It really read like it was her personal journal in the beginning. That allowed me to feel everything she was feeling...and I'm not sure that was a good thing. It's wonderful that an author can do that, but believe me when I say, I didn't want to feel what this heroine was feeling! Oh EM GEE!! I loved all the twists around Zachary, the hero....and there were many twists and connections made where he was concerned. The relationship that developed between Rachel and Zachary was strange. We've all heard of Stockholm syndrome...where the victim falls in love with his or her abuser. Well, this relationship was instant Stockholm at it's peak! I did enjoy the shift of power from Zachary to Rachel in one scene....and Rachel enjoyed it, too. Zachary was such a contradiction. I mean, he is only one of Rachel's many abusers, yet he is also her savior. He is her *spoiler*, but submissive at the same time. Yes, I think Zachary is a closet sub.

There is a lot of angst in this book, and I love a book filled with twists and angst. The abuse scenes were so well written, I had to check my mirror to see if I was covered in red welts and bruises. I was sick to my stomach while reading a few scenes. I actually did throw up a little in my mouth. I'm telling you, I felt everything! Just when I thought the worst was over....BAM!! The abuse kicked up 10 notches...on a scale of 1 to 10!

Now, with all that said, there were a few things I didn't like about the book. I really didn't like the progression of the relationship between Zachary and Rachel. It was rushed and forced. Perhaps if this was a novel instead of a novella, the author would have carried this out a bit more to my liking. What I liked about Rachel in the beginning of the story - her strength - very quickly vanished when 18% into the book. Can you say weak and naive? I mean, the girl had just been brutally abused, for Pete's sake! She was so forgiving and excusing of Zachary's behavior...WTH?! Why wasn't she angry?! I was furious! Rachel is certifiable in my eyes. I also felt that one of the scenes was out of sequence, and the story seemed a bit far fetched at times toward the ending. I actually made a note to myself at the end of the book. That's it?! That's all there is?! I had to double check that I wasn't missing anything...I wasn't.

Hmmm...how to rate this one...I just don't know. The plot is good, though seemingly out of sequence in only one area. The angst kept me glued to the pages. The descriptions were very good, as I was able to feel everything Rachel felt, and I really liked her...at first. I didn't like the rushed relationship and the fact that it seemed to skip parts of the relationship...not to mention that Zachary and Rachel never kissed once in the entire book, but they love each other? Rachel is one screwed up chicka, and this is one mind screwing book. So, I reminded myself that I rate books based on the feeling the book gave me while reading it and not on content. This book gave me conflicting feelings. I liked it, I felt it...but it was missing something for me. So, I give this book 3 stars and hope that the next installment (another novella) is a little lighter on the dark (for my own sanity) and with better story progression. *Note: When I mentioned that I had purchased the first two books in the series, the author did tell me that Keep Me Safe was the most raw of the three in the trilogy.(less)

This was one of those books that makes you cringe and wonder wtf you just read. I downloaded this upon recommendation for something similar to the Dark Duet series. I have to say that this is so many times darker and more distressing than the CJ Roberts book.

I tried erotica years ago and was bored to tears...felt like I was reading someone's laundry list of sex acts. I came to read this book because I saw one of my friends at Goodreads had read it and thought it might be a little bit like Captive in the Dark which I loved. This book is written in the first person POV by Rachel and the story starts with Rachel who has been kidnapped by a local gang. In a twisted way to protect her from more violence she is raped by Zachary who is one of the members.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was bold, brave and the writing itself was good. I really loved the fact that the author explored the darker aspects of humanity, and did so with out sugarcoating or fear.

The story starts out with a rape. Sort of. The main character, Rachel, really doesn't seem to mind because her rapist, Zachary, is good looking and gentle. He seems very remorseful during the act, and we find out later why. I will say, I absolutely loved that plot twist.

I had to process what I read so it took me a few days to formulate my thoughts about this book as well as the series. I read the entire series, at least the 3 books that are out now, this weekend.

I MUST preface this by saying if you are NOT into Dark Erotic Romance this is not the book for you. Dubious consent and acts of violence are present in this book. I know that for some readers the subject matter is too strong and the author gives fair warning about this series.
