"The price of protection is simple. You have to let me touch you. Kiss you. Not every time the lights go out. Not every night of the week. But -- enough."

It's kinda strange but after finishing this novella that ended at 77 % (!) I was so stunned that I felt nothing at all. I didn't shed a single tear. I guess it happens now and then that you feel the full impact of a story a day or two after you've closed the book. Anyway, I'm sitting in front of my laptop, tr...more

How to review?
Firstly I have to say this is not my normal choice of story. I much prefer my nice safe comfort reads. But saying that, this certainly kept my interest.
In the begining I was unsure of this story and almost reluctant to read, but without realizing it I was half way through and totally conected to Joey and Gabe.
The begining was hard to get through for me, and I disliked even hated Gabe at that time. He was a conundrum at times. One moment a champion of the underdog the next a mea...more

Compelling, more than a little beautiful, and sad as fuck.
A little clumsy in the beginning; musically measured in the middle; and nearly perfect at the end, which I found almost literally stunning.
I didn't see it coming, and I'm glad, because it felt real—as real as the best of what came before.
I'd have preferred not to have been in Gabriel's head at all; for it to have been purely Joey's perspective, all the way through. It would have heightened the violence of the opening scenes, and rendered...more

God, I wasn't expecting this book to turn out the way it did. The blurb kind of gave an impression that this was erotica, and yes there are sex scenes in this book, but this book is so. much. more. I seriously let loose some tears at the ending. Logically, I knew that the ending was the only ending that would've made sense, but gosh, I still wasn't prepared for it, I was so shocked, angry, and sad. My edition of this book came with a short story that details what happens to one of the MCs many,...more
I have a new crush. Surprising because he is a convicted murderer, a rapist, and I'm completely in awe of him. Gabriel MaKenna is one of those men that win you over no matter the bad they do.
If you enjoy dark erotica, you will enjoy this book. If you like to read unusual love stories, here it is.
I highly recommend this book to those of you that can get past rape in your fiction.

I am trying to piece together my thoughts on this book. I can say one thing, I'm really starting to hate books that end quickly. What's up with these three page endings?
At first I thought that this book was going to be horrible. Thought it was another non-con and that would be the end. What i didn't expect was to start rooting for the characters. I wanted Gabe and Joey to be able to get out,[; :] so the...more

My Review:
I have waffled and debated my rating for this book. My ratings are based upon how much I enjoy a book.... my entertainment value. There are certain things that can ruin a book for me along these lines.
1. I simply do not enjoy historical books anymore.
2. I NEED an HEA.
This book broke both of those rules, but I still LOVED it.
This book....it's gritty, it's harsh, it's violent. It's about prison life in the 1930's. But these characters...omg, these characters. The author weaves the story...more

Gabe MacKenna is known throughout Wentworth Prison as a tough, ruthless man not to be crossed. He is everything that comes to mind when you think of a prison thug. Most of the guards turn a blind eye when Gabe is on a roll. In prison for life, Gabe has nothing but a quickie with a willing inmate, bland food and poker for cigarettes to fill the lonely hours when not working for the prison itself. I so, so, so liked this book.
Shock the heck out of me, but I did. I typically can’t handle this kind of violence…prison non-con borders right along my hard limit. But, something about the way the author writes Gabriel makes him sympathetic despite his horrendous actions. Conflicted, lonely, uncertain, brutal - but proving that LOVE can bring out the best in anyone.
Reading the relationship between Gabriel and Joey grow from force and hatred to something beautiful was painfully exquisite. And as G...more

An amazing, unforgettable emotional rollercoaster. This book crushed me with its savage brutality, enraptured me with a surprisingly touching love story, only to completely and utterly destroy me at the end.
I have no idea what to rate this, or even if I should. There's a part if me that feels like this story transcends such frivolities.
Definitely need to sleep on this one............

Emotional and unexpectedly tender for a prison story. There's the brutal, but there's also the acknowledgment of humanity in persons written off as not. I'd say more, but I'd give too much away.

I'd like to say this book blew me away, but I think I'm still rather numb, probably shell-shocked. Definitely not an easy read...actually, it was quite brutal. I'm mostly an escape reader (though I find that recently I've had less patience for a steady diet of light reads and have started searching for books with more meaning, but that's besides the point), and my first inclination is to say I didn't enjoy the book, but then I'm forced to confess that that's ju...more

Importing my review from the S.A. Reid edition: Gabriel is top dog at a men's prison in the 1930s, and Joey is a new inmate. Gabriel is immediately attracted to Joey and, because of Joey's crime, he feels justified in brutally raping Joey in the showers. When Joey gets back from his stay in the infirmary (where he had to get stitches!) he finds out that Gabriel has arranged to become Joey's cellmate. It's a harsh beginning and the brutality is not downplayed. Joey really hates Gabriel, but he le...more

For the record, this would be the first time I've used a swearword on a review here at GR. But God, this book had me cursing at the top of my lungs I had to use a pillow to muffle the sound of my scream.
Thank you GR for inventing "spoiler alert" warnings and thank you fellow readers for not giving too much information on your reviews. This kind of respect allowed me to read the book without prejudice which made the...more
Historical gay romance set in a prison. Should be three strikes right there but I was enthralled with this book.
In prison for a crime he didn't commit Joey finds himself under the protection of the very man who raped him. The relationships seems doomed from the start but Joey discovers something deeper in his cellmate than the murdering rapist the world sees. Prison brings darkness to the heart of a lonely man. Can Joey find the light in Gabriel? Can theirs be a happily ever after for them?

This book gives a realistic look at what prison life is like for men. I would not want to be male and in prison (wouldn't want to be in prison at all for that matter). I'm not sure how I feel now that I've read this. It definitely isn't romance. Although we do get a love story. I'm feeling melancholy.

A harsh book, at least in the beginning and somehow in the end.
Gabe is a harsh man, he is the big guy in Wentworth. He is clever, intelligent and ruthless enough but not without heart. But he knows what he wants and what he needs to do.
He never intented to become "prison-gay" but after a few years he takes his first "girl" into his protection. Blowjobs from Lonnie are marginally better than his own hand...
Then a new prisoner, Dr. Joseph Cooper (Joey), arrives and Gabe is fascinated by the man. S...more

Well, I picked up this book (very late, ashamedly so) because I needed a quick read before I left on a trip, and because I won it on a Goodreads giveaway. I honestly had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by this book.

This story was a disappointment. I love prison stories. I was so excited when I saw this was a prison story and it started off really strong. Then it all went downhill. The characters turned into something out of a cheesy romance novel. The entire thing turned into a cheesy romance novel. It might as well have not been a prison story at all at that point.
And do yourself a favour. Don't read the "Coda". Just don't do it. I rate the "Coda" no stars. I'm not sure why the author felt this was a good...more

In S.A. Reid’s sharply-written “Protection”, set in the early 1930s, Gabriel MacKenna is a strong-willed convict, serving two consecutive life sentences, in England’s Wentworth Prison. Although he has succumbed to the idea of living the rest of his days incarcerated, Gabriel refuses to stoop down to becoming a ‘prison queer’ as he puts it. He insists on maintaining his heterosexuality and his hard demeanor and intimidating fighting skills makes him well-respected by his fellow inmates, as well a...more

It's a sweet, yet sad story that I really enjoyed. The writing style worked for me and I bonded with the characters.

Wow this book was a good read. This was a great short story. I will admit that I love watching the LockUp series on MSNBC so I thought that this book would be something along those lines. Well it is in a way but still totally different that what I thought it would be. While I admit I am not a big fan of m/m book this is one of the good one's to me. I did not hate this book, but it could have been so much more. I am intrigued by prison stories as they create an atypical environment for relationships to develop. The idea of men becoming your 'girl' and protection is fascinating. Protection definitely explored this universe. This is a bittersweet story and the main characters Gab and Joey were compelling. I especially liked Gab, even though he was a double lifer, he had many redeeming qualities, charisma, and inner conflict.

There’s a saying that goes something like, “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I'm a firm believer that some of those shining little breathless moments don't take place in reality at all, but in the realms of the fictional people we invite into our lives. Those moments may come from a mere turn of phrase, or they may come from reading a book whose characters are unforgettable. More than a few of those breathless moments happened...more

“Unscrewing the cap, Gabriel squeezed a bit of clear jelly onto his fingers and understood. Covering Joey’s body with his own, Gabriel kissed his lips. “But you said – something we haven’t tried …” “We haven’t.” Reaching up, Joey cupped Gabriel’s cheek. “What happened before was one stranger attacking another. What happens now is between you and me.” “Joey.” Gabriel kissed the other man’s earlobe, his jawline, the hollow of his throat. “I can’t hurt you again. I’ll kill myself first.”

“Gabriel shuddered with obvious pleasure; Joey, half out of his body with the sensation, pumped in and out with terrible urgency. Forever wouldn’t have been long enough. When Gabriel seized, Joey left himself entirely, flesh overloaded with pleasure, spirit suspended between life and death. “Joey? Are you all right?” Drawing a deep breath, Joey opened his eyes. “Never better. You?” “’Twas sweet.” Gabriel smiled. “And I was thinking. Now that we’ve both had each other – that’s as good as taking vows, isn’t it?”
