How to review?
Firstly I have to say this is not my normal choice of story. I much prefer my nice safe comfort reads. But saying that, this certainly kept my interest.

In the begining I was unsure of this story and almost reluctant to read, but without realizing it I was half way through and totally conected to Joey and Gabe.

Compelling, more than a little beautiful, and sad as fuck.

A little clumsy in the beginning; musically measured in the middle; and nearly perfect at the end, which I found almost literally stunning.

I didn't see it coming, and I'm glad, because it felt real—as real as the best of what came before.

I'd have preferred not to have been in Gabriel's head at all; for it to have been purely Joey's perspective, all the way through. It would have heightened the violence of the opening scenes, and rendered...more

I have a new crush. Surprising because he is a convicted murderer, a rapist, and I'm completely in awe of him. Gabriel MaKenna is one of those men that win you over no matter the bad they do.

If you enjoy dark erotica, you will enjoy this book. If you like to read unusual love stories, here it is.

I highly recommend this book to those of you that can get past rape in your fiction.

I have waffled and debated my rating for this book. My ratings are based upon how much I enjoy a book.... my entertainment value. There are certain things that can ruin a book for me along these lines.
1. I simply do not enjoy historical books anymore.
2. I NEED an HEA.

This book just blew me away because on one hand it is a brutal, gritty story and on the other hand it is a beautiful love story. I was caught up in that juxtaposition until I turned the last page. Ms Baggins has the rare gift of being able to create characters that are crude, flawed social misfits and makes the reader adore them. This story is definitely character driven. Gabe truly has no redeeming qualities and is not someone you would bring home to Mom yet I found myself cheering for him right until the end. The characters evolved slowly as did the connection between Joey and Gabe. The story line read smoothly and clearly and my attention never wavered from Ms Baggins' nearly excellent writing style. I am a fan of prison stories and also like a good romance story. This book supplied both without an overabundance of pages that tend to bog down some books. There is no HEA to Gabe and Joey's relationship but I knew there couldn't be because of the length of the men's sentences. I honestly believe that a HEA would have ruined this story. I cannot recommend this story highly enough and look forward to reading more of Ms Baggins' works. (less)

I so, so, so liked this book.

Shock the heck out of me, but I did. I typically can’t handle this kind of violence…prison non-con borders right along my hard limit. But, something about the way the author writes Gabriel makes him sympathetic despite his horrendous actions. Conflicted, lonely, uncertain, brutal - but proving that LOVE can bring out the best in anyone.

An amazing, unforgettable emotional rollercoaster. This book crushed me with its savage brutality, enraptured me with a surprisingly touching love story, only to completely and utterly destroy me at the end.
I have no idea what to rate this, or even if I should. There's a part if me that feels like this story transcends such frivolities.
Definitely need to sleep on this one............

Emotional and unexpectedly tender for a prison story. There's the brutal, but there's also the acknowledgment of humanity in persons written off as not. I'd say more, but I'd give too much away.

Wow.... This was not pretty, tidy or all the other things you might think about M/M romance, BUT what a ride... Just Wow! If you can make it through this book without shedding a tear (or a lot of tears!) you have a much harder heart than I do.

The book was hard to get into at first what with all the Irish slang and various cultural references of English and Irish alike that I had to look up several words to decipher a certain phrase or understand a particular action, but after a while, I finally got used to it.

As the blurb narrates, the story is set in 1931 Wentworth prison and revolves around the lives of Joseph Cooper and Gabriel MacKenna. To say that both men didn't get off to a good start is an understatement which almost made me doubt that any kind of relationship could form between them. Thankfully, the author skillfuly crafted a plot which started with a bargain, progressed into friendship and transformed into love.

The story is narrated in the third person (thank heavens) which allowed me to really get to know every dimension of each character. But what I like most about the book and perhaps, what sets it appart from others is it's brutal honesty. From ruptured stitches all the way up to semifluids bursting from a punctured eye, the author didn't spare the readers from any pain. It was graphic and truthful in all the ways one would turn away from the sight of a festering wound but surprisingly, it's what made the story even more memorable for me.

In other books, pain is always glazed over with beauty which always made me wonder how the hero could look so unexpectedly attractive even after being shot several times or smell immaculate even after running through the woods all day without ever taking a bath. But here, the characters are shown taking a shit and even having wet underarms after a hard fight that I thought it was brilliant!

Pain isn't supposed to be beautiful and agony shouldn't be downplayed as attractive. Authors sometimes compromise that in order to make their books more appealing but this one is different.

For those looking for a romantic read, be warned. This book can be quite a shock. It tore my heart to shreds and I think I'll cry myself to sleep tonight but make no mistake, I WILL read it again and again.(less)

This book gives a realistic look at what prison life is like for men. I would not want to be male and in prison (wouldn't want to be in prison at all for that matter). A harsh book, at least in the beginning and somehow in the end.

Gabe is a harsh man, he is the big guy in Wentworth. He is clever, intelligent and ruthless enough but not without heart. But he knows what he wants and what he needs to do.

This story was a disappointment. I love prison stories. I was so excited when I saw this was a prison story and it started off really strong. Then it all went downhill. The characters turned into something out of a cheesy romance novel. The entire thing turned into a cheesy romance novel. It might as well have not been a prison story at all at that point.

Many things make “Protection” a great read: first the characters are believable and fully three-dimensional. Initially, readers might be turned off by Gabriel’s ways of thinking and acting, but through vivid and compelling descriptions of his upbringing, readers begin to sympathize and grow to like him, just in the same way Joey does. Each character has flaws, including Joey, but how they deal with these flaws, both individually and together as a couple, make this book very compelling.
As for the ending, I will not spoil it. Giving the setting and nature of the book, I should have figured what would happen, but I was still struck emotionally when it happened. This a very well-written book, with two really great characters, as well as nicely-written, engaging erotic scenes. This is a book that I will be keeping in my Kindle library for a long time.

Full disclosure - I only read this book because it was offered as a free review read. I am so glad I did and will look out for more of this author's work.

It's a sweet, yet sad story that I really enjoyed. The writing style worked for me and I bonded with the characters.

I did not hate this book, but it could have been so much more. I am intrigued by prison stories as they create an atypical environment for relationships to develop. The idea of men becoming your 'girl' and protection is fascinating. Protection definitely explored this universe. This is a bittersweet story and the main characters Gab and Joey were compelling. Those moments may come from a mere turn of phrase, or they may come from reading a book whose characters are unforgettable. More than a few of those breathless moments happened...more There’s a saying that goes something like, “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I'm a firm believer that some of those shining little breathless moments don't take place in reality at all, but in the realms of the fictional people we invite into our lives. Those moments may come from a mere turn of phrase, or they may come from reading a book whose characters are unforgettable. More than a few of those breathless moments happened for me while reading Protection, not because the language of the narrative was exceptionally unique, but because the story itself was so tragically beautiful that it caused me to question my belief in the black and white of some actions which absolutely should not be forgiven, and reinforced my belief that there are times when hate and love truly can coexist within the confines of a single relationship.

Protection opens in pre-World War II England in the fictional Wentworth Prison, where Gabriel MacKenna is serving concurring life sentences for murdering his parents. Is there such a thing as justifiable homicide? That question gave me something to chew on as I learned more about Gabriel and the crime he’d committed. There’s no question he deserved to be where he was, but there’s also this gray area of understanding where Gabriel is concerned which allowed me to empathize with him on every level. He was such a dichotomy of behaviors, incredibly violent and philosophical about the justice he metes out—it’s necessary for his own survival as well as for those he chooses to protect, after all—yet there is a charisma and charm about him, an innate intelligence and aching quality to him that made him irresistible in spite of how much I tried to convince myself he should be entirely beyond redemption.

Dr. Joseph Cooper doesn’t belong in prison. He became the fall guy for a doctor who framed Joey for the death of a mother and her baby, tricking him into writing a confession that effectively robbed Joey of his life and locked the door to his cell before he’d even had the opportunity for a fair trial. The worst possible thing that could’ve happened to him upon his arrival at Wentworth was to catch the eye of Gabriel MacKenna, but that’s exactly what happened, and in Gabriel’s world, a doctor who murders a woman and her newborn child is due the sort of justice that Gabriel serves.

This book is a series of conflicts and contrasts. It contains scenes of rape and violence, which given its setting isn’t unusual or unexpected. What was entirely unexpected was that I found myself trying to justify Gabriel’s actions and his relationship with Joey, and there is a hypocrisy in my way of thinking; I freely admit it. How can love evolve from such a violent beginning? Need, desperation, the want of human touch and the desire to belong to someone can spring from even the most barren ground, it seems. Love can be a prison in its own right, and freedom can be empty when the person you wanted to share your life with isn’t there to share it with you.

These are men who draw a distinction between being queer and being “prison queer” and it’s an important difference to them—one is a perversion and the other is making the best of what’s available. But falling in love with someone who’s supposed to be nothing more than a way to scratch an itch crosses a line. It makes you begin to dream of possibilities of a future that can never happen. It makes you want things you’ve never wanted before and it makes you realize how helpless you are against your circumstances, and that is a heartbreaking reality that clings to me even now, long after finishing this book. Gabriel’s love for Joey intensified his already exaggerated need to protect what was his, and in the end, the depth of that love proved fatal.

S.A. Reid has written a story that challenges perceptions and confronts perspective. Protection is a book I’ll read again sometime; maybe the next time I’m in the mood to have my heart yanked out through my tear ducts. It’s painfully beautiful and beautifully painful in its defiance of the rules of traditional romance, and I loved that the author made me believe in and be grateful for all of its contrasts.
