So, I tried to listen to this book, which might have been my big mistake. I find that I have less patience with books on audio than I do with text books. Possibly because there's no way to skim an audiobook. But, I just couldn't get into it. I didn't particularly like the heroine or the hero, nor did I feel compelled by their situation. It's been too long since I've posted a review here, thanks to my dissertation (now almost done!), but I've finally managed to sneak in some time to read. My choice: Under Her Brass Corset by Brenda Williamson. I was in the mood for some steampunk romance and thought this would fit the bill. My choice: Under Her Brass Corset by Brenda Williamson. I was in the mood for some steampunk romance and thought this would fit the bill. In some ways it does, but in others it was not at all what I expected.When I read the cover copy, I expected Under Her Brass Corsetto be a fun adventure. I didn't expect pirates. And it's mostly about pirates. I probably should have guessed from the skull and swords and treasure map background on the cover but I mostly oohed and aahed over the gorgeous image and didn't focus on the corner details when I was browsing Carina's offerings on NetGalley. My bad. Don't get me wrong, I love pirates, but it wasn't what I thought the book was going to about so I needed a bit of time to shift my expectations.
I really enjoyed the hero and heroine of the story. Jasper is a dashing gentleman with quite the history. He also has a gift for invention, which is where most of the steampunk elements of the story come from. As an immortal, he's had a lot of time to see the world and it shows. Abigail is like a breath of fresh air to Jasper. She's got none of the qualities you might expect to see from a woman in a period novel: she's spunky, courageous, and skeptical. She's also something of a free spirit, bucking convention in many ways, including having premarital sex. She's also all alone in the world since her father was killed two weeks before we meet her. There are also some lovely secondary characters but I won't talk about them so that they remain a surprise. ;)

One thing I didn't like about Under Her Brass Corset was the amount of sex in the story. I generally avoid erotica because I'm more interested in the characters than in the different positions they use and Under Her Brass Corset has several multi-page sex scenes, plus some self-lovin'. Brenda Williamson also uses some words to refer to Abigail's lady parts that really didn't jive for me. Specifically, there's one word in Chapter 11 that made me double-take because I couldn't believe she'd used it, particularly since the book is told from Abigail's perspective. None of the sex is badly written but I really wasn't expecting as much graphic sex or sexy thoughts in a 70,000 story. These scenes will go over very well with readers who enjoy a lot of spice but I feel compelled to warn you that there's a lot of it in Under Her Brass Corset.

All in all, though, I did enjoy the story in Under Her Brass Corset. It has a fun, if somewhat predictable, plot and I really enjoyed Merlin the cat. I'm curious to see what Brenda Williamson does next.

The title and cover of this novel are a bit misleading. Under Her Brass Corset appears at first glance to be a steampunk novel, but in fact it is more fantasy, with a few steampunk elements. While I found the premise of the novel interesting - an immortal captain falls for the young woman he’s been watching over since childhood - I found the book to be a bit disjointed. The book isn’t badly written; it just isn’t well written either, so I have a hard time recommending it.

Set in what seems to be Victorian England but is never really identified as such, the novel begins with Abigail Thatch making her way home alone, attempting to avoid any dangerous encounters. She meets Captain Jasper Blackthorn in what appears to be a fortuitous meeting, and there’s an instant chemistry between them. Abigail informs her new friend that her father was recently murdered during an attempted burglary, and she is unable to make the mortgage payments on the house, which will soon lead to foreclosure on her family home.

But after another burglary attempt is made, Captain Jasper Blackthorn discovers the object the thief was looking for - a globe that can point out the location of an elixir that grants immortality. The Captain is an immortal and has looked out for Abigail and her family for generations, and he realizes that this compass, long believed lost, can only attract more danger to the vulnerable Abigail. He steals the compass, little realizing that Abigail would follow him to his steam powered ship and climb aboard, insisting on joining him in his adventures. But the honorable captain finds this spirited young woman irresistible. Can he convince the skeptical Abigail of both his love and his immortality?

This novel started out with a great deal of promise. Abigail comes across as very brave in the face of daunting circumstances, namely her father’s death and the imminent foreclosure on her home. She’s very attracted to Jasper, and he is mysterious yet sympathetic. I was a bit surprised, however, by how quickly Abigail jumps into bed with Jasper. I just never felt very invested in the hero and heroine, and their romance, while steamy, didn’t draw me in. Jasper is supposed to be much, much older, yet he acts as though he’s only a few years older than Abigail. When I looked back over my notes about the book, the beginning of their physical relationship seems to be the point where the book goes downhill for me.

Once Abigail and Jasper are on his flying ship (one of the few steampunk elements in the novel), their physical relationship goes into high gear, despite Abigail’s refusal to believe Jasper’s assertions that he is immortal and that she’s related to the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who Jasper claims is also immortal. The action also picks up at this point. We learn about the elixir and its Avalon connection, and all that entails. I was surprised by what felt like a sudden shift in genre from steampunk to fantasy. I don’t particularly mind when an author mixes genres, but it felt awkward in this novel, since the book began in one genre then switched to another with little transition.

This wasn’t badly written, but it wasn’t as engaging as I had hoped. I would feel badly if a friend spent her money on this book, so I can’t really recommend it.

Under Her Brass Corset by Brenda Williamson looked like steampunk when I picked it up from NetGalley. I mean, really, "brass corset"? What would you think?

Instead, think of it as the counterweight to Leslie Dicken's The Iron Heart, which is steampunk but doesn't explicitly say it's steampunk. This review was interesting to write, and I must say, truthfully, that I really did enjoy the novel, but there were just some parts I feel as though I couldn't help but shake by head on. Overall though, it was an enjoyable read.

I am so in love with steampunk right now!

This book was wonderful! Sweet, sexy, engaging, entertaining, terrifying, and heartwarming! I was whisked away to a world of immortality, flying boats, and a love story 20 years in the making. Under Her Brass Corset and Brenda Williamson have done that, in spades!

Abigail Thatch is a "familyless" woman who embarks on a journey with Jasper Blackthorn, a very handsome stranger with lots of secrets. Abigail needs to find her great grandfathers treasure so she can save her house from foreclosure. Jasper suggests they go together on his boat to find the treasure knowing all along the treasure is not what Abigail is expecting. The things they see and the feelings revealed will change them forever!

The heat between Abigail and Jasper is instant and the love scenes are passionate and provocative, a perfect mix! Oh, Jasper . . . *sigh* . . . he is so lust provoking and sweet and sexy. The immortal pirate with a heart and tears, I could just eat him up!! I enjoyed the feelings he expresses over his infatuation with Abigail and when they finally come together I was so happy for both of them. Jasper needed Abigail in his life as a lover and life mate. Abigail needed someone to love her and someone to give her all to! I was not happy with the trust issues she had but I can understand the refusal to believe in youth fountains and immortality. Ponce deLeon's quest was one of my favorites in school and Brenda Williamson did a terrific job spinning off of that. The benefits and positives to eternal life were so wonderfully expressed as well. Jasper's lost love is a perfect example and Abigail's feelings of giving her mother eternal life is even more on point.

Adam is a wonderful supporting character. What a great friend and handsome, to boot! It would have been AMAZING if there was a menage with Jasper and Abigail, but then again, maybe not because then she'd have both, the bitch! j/k I really hope he gets a story! Merlin and Quito were fun character too.

Oh, TATTOOS!! Abigail is inked, how awesome and a historical novel first for me!!

Under Her Brass Corset is a must, must, MUST read for 2012 and Brenda Williamson is a must, must, MUST follow author!

What I didn't realize but quickly understood is that this story was a romance adventure with fantasy and Steampunk elements. So...there were many, many smexy bits - hot and steamy I tell you!
The story: Abigail has had a tough time of things lately, her father was recently murdered, her mother passed away when she was younger and now she is having financial problems and may soon lose the house she grew up in. The action and mystery start and ramp up quickly once Abigail meets the pirate Jasper, then finds Jasper’s ship and jumps aboard because he has stolen what she hopes is a treasure map from her house. Treasure would be the answer to her financial woes and she would be able to keep her house.
Needless to say, they sail away to find the “treasure”. Jasper has outfitted his ship so he can sail by himself, and he has some mega-cool gadgets. He also created a brass corset which fits Abigail perfectly. They are chased by pirates. They run into sea creatures, they hang out with Juan Ponce de Leon, they fly. There are immortals, Jasper was badly hurt 150 years ago and since then hasn’t befriended other mortals to keep his heart safe. But Abigail becomes increasingly important to him.
There are some oddities to the story. Jasper is wearing an eye patch in the beginning. No reason. The brass corset? Ok, he made it, she likes to wear it. Abigail has a lot of sex with Jasper and later becomes increasingly paranoid that he is going to steal her treasure. Then there is the troll. I guess some things are just to show there is more to the world than Abigail ever knew. There is also the cat…I guess there will be a sequel because there are some dangling storylines otherwise.
Abigail is an adventurous heroine. She has a few consistency issues but she is pretty forward, knows what she wants and sets out to get it. She has a tattoo and had sex before marriage. Remember, Victorian England here…she should be more restrained. But she is young, impetuous and because of that perfect for a romance novel. She has a winner of a partner in Jasper the pirate who is sexy and handsome, smart, immortal, not afraid to cry and loves her to distraction. Awww. So sweet.
This adventure story was enjoyable, funny, sweet, sexy and ridiculous! I want to go on that type of adventure with such a handsome, skilled (wink wink) pirate! For an enjoyable escapist fantasy of a read, pick this book up. I give it 3.5 stars.

There are parts of Under Her Brass Corset that were really fun, it starts out as a rollicking adventure with a roguish immortal air ship captain who is trying hard not to fall for the woman whose family he's secretly watched over for longer than her lifetime. The biggest issues I had with this story was that 1) Just because you have flying ships and brass corsets, you are not a steampunk novel and 2) There is no way a Victorian lady of any class who cared about not having to work as a prostitute the rest of her life would get a tattoo or travel on a ship across the Atlantic ocean alone with a man. I don't care how great her thirst for adventure. Getting past those issues, it was actually a good Fantasy novella.
