Stolen gems. Shady cops. Murders that could lead to an international incident. Orwell Brennan, chief of the Dockerty police force in small-town Ontario, had enough problems on his hands with the mayoral election, a daughter engaged, and, perhaps worst of all, someone in the department stealing his favourite cookies. Things are complicated for the loveable curmudgeon: a pol ...more

I enjoy some crime fiction, I enjoy some chick lit, and am always prepared to try something new.

This, I think, is the second in a series with detective Orwell Brennan. A novel by Canadian actor/TV writer Marc Strange. It's set in the little Ontario town of Dockerty. It's not the sort of place I'm familiar with, fictional or otherwise, but I got a good sense of it the book.

The plus points, well, the settings, the main character and the general style of writing.... all good. The trouble was the ot

I won this book from a contest on Goodreads.

This story has it all! A well put together novel set in Dockerty, a small town in Ontario. Police Chief Orwell Brennan is dealing with a mayor up for re-election, his daughter's impending marriage and now a Toronto police officer on a murder investigation is found killed in his motel room. As well, the dead cop's ex-partner, who is now a crooked political figure and also possibly involved in murder. There is also new evidence of illegal smuggling from
This mystery has a lot of pleasing elements: a good set of crimes (major jewel smuggling, several murders, blackmail, assault), an interesting setting (a small city in Ontario), solid detection (provided by two women detectives, one loud and vulgar and the other one a fitness fanatic, both tougher than nails), a set of interesting characters (the paternal police chief, Orwell Brennan), an emigre Russian ballerina, a crooked cop or two, several thugs, several Russians, and various small-city poli ...more
Extraordinary, my first book by Marc Strange the good news is he has 3 more books to savor. The bad news is he passed away in May 2012. This is a rare and compelling book with compelling, complex characters. A great story and written beautifully. If you like a great read with wonderfully characterized players you can't beat this.

A pretty good mystery that is enhanced by a realistic set of surrounding characters. The main character has a lot of personal issues that feel real and are handled in a realistic manner. The mystery itself almost felt needlessly convoluted, but was still interesting.
Enjoyed the book with the exception of the last few pages where he tells you what happens to all of the characters after the story ended. As an ending it is a little too contrived and tidy for me.

Great read. Tragic that the author is dead. I liked the setting and the characters almost more than the plot, though there was nothing wrong with the plot either. Highly recommended.

There were some reasons to like this but it was also easy to put down. I did like the detectives but it often seemed a little too predictable and in the end it just wasn't a favorite.
Chapter setup left me feeling story was too disjointed. Plot was of interest once figured out how to read. Takes more patience than I was willing to invest.
Found choppy chapters distracting. Over all enjoyed mystery once adapted to style.
