Le tossine del pesce palla, del curaro e della cicuta sono veleni che provocano la morte per asfissia in quanto bloccando la contrazione muscolare impedendo la funzione della respirazione, lasciando la vittima cosciente fino in ultimo.
In questo racconto la stessa fine atroce dei protagonisti è provocata da una produzione abnorme dei tessuti ossei a causa di calcio potenziato contenuto negli alimenti.

L'idea della malattia, di origine inspiegabile, che porta all'unione di tutte le ossa umane è interessante e la descrizione dell'evoluzione della patologia è decisamente inquietante.
I problemi di questo racconto però è il contesto introdotto di sfuggita senza particolare attenzione per i dettagli e la storia in sè in cui gli incontri con personaggi cruciali sono dati dal caso e la parte emozionale dei protagonisti spesso poco adeguata alla situazione, e quindi poco credibile.
