Gruff, funny and tension-filled, all at the same time!

Set in Arizona in the mid-1940’s, this book follows Walter “Hook” Runyon, railroad investigator (a/k/a a “railroad bull” or a “yard dog”) as he attempts to answer several questions. First, is how a young army guard, charged with guarding a strategic nearby railroad tunnel for over a year, wound up dead on the tracks in the tunnel? Second, is who has been stealing copper from Hook’s “employer” (a junk yard dealer named Scrap West, always on th...more

Third book in the Hook Runyon Mystery. Great drama with the return of Hook Runyon, the one-armed railroad bull who finds himself investigating the death of a military guard. When he gets to the scene, inside the Johnson Canyon Tunnel, it doesn't take Hook long to realize this is no accident.
The mystery takes place at the end of WWII. As Hook scours the area around the accident, he is convinced it is murder. When Allison Capron from the Army Transportation Department shows up, Hook is sure that t...more

Written in a cool laconic voice with dry humour, some passages of this book were genuinely arresting. However, the plot was somewhat meandering and dragged somewhat along the initial 3/4 of the book. It was only towards the last 1/4 of the book that the treads started to come together, though in a somewhat improbably fashion. Although enjoyable to read, it was a little difficult to get to grips with characters other than the main protagonist, and the end left me feeling that the author promised...more

I've found a new (to me) favorite author. Sheldon Russell's series about one-armed railroad yard dog, Hook Runyon, has completely captivated me. He's also got a perfectly awful mongrel dog that always makes me smile. Plus, Mr. Russell writes wonderful strong women characters, in this case an army lt. While there's always a mystery to solve, the charm of these books lies with the character. Funny, quirky, gritty. The series is set mainly in the Southwest during the years of WWII.

This is the 2nd book in this series that I have read about a one-armed railroad detective, known at the time as a Yard Dog. The time period is World War II. I liked the story quite a bit and also the locale (northern Arizona.) The Yard Dog hero, named Hook Runyon, moves about the railroad, then known as the Santa Fe, on steam locomotives, called various colorful names like kettles, and small vehicles that can cruise the rails. Somehow I was enchanted by the whole book.

this seemed pointless and rambling and abadoned. i really liked his first book, yard dog, but this one has more holes than my old pendleton. The Yard Dog

A slow starter...I didn't think I was going to like this one, but the longer I read, the better it got.

This is the third in the Hook Runyon Mystery series and maybe the best yet. I enjoy the dry humor in these books, and there are some great one-liners ("I'd give you a hand," he said, "but I only got the one.") The plot twists kept me engrossed until the very end.
