To the public, he’s a hero: a brutal killer who targets sex offenders. To most of London’s police force, he’s the suspect in a gruesome, time-consuming case to be avoided. But to Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan, he’s a murderer—no matter the sins of his victims—and catching him is her job. Assigned to the case with the division’s unreadable new DI, Josh Derwent, young a...more

From the prolific author who created “The Burning,” comes a new title that is extremely interesting.

As readers begin, they are greeted with a protagonist who is, quite literally, the ultimate ‘sicko’ hero—using his time and energy to get rid of child sex offenders in some of the most gruesome ways possible; from fractured skulls and slit throats to a former ‘Man of God’ who is shot in the head. Although this may seem ugly, the punishments seem to fit the crimes.

The police department is on his...more

The Reckoning, by Jane Casey, b-plus, Narrated by Sarah Coones, Produced by Brilliance Audio,Downloaded from audible.com.

The second book about Maeve, the District Constable fighting crime. In this one, she’s been assigned to a new guy who is a veteran of police procedure from another district. Maeve knows right away that this is a man who doesn’t like to work with women. He tells Maeve that he’ll do the work and the thinking and she should stay out of his way and stand around looking pretty. Th...more

I have become a serious fan of Jane Casey and her Maeve Kerrigan police procedural series.

Maeve is 28, and a Detective Constable for the London Police Murder Squad. She adores her boss, Superintendent Charles Godley, but he pairs her with a brash newcomer to the squad, Josh Derwent, insensitive and sexist. In fact, this is how most of the squad fellows are except for Rob Langton, with whom Maeve has been having a surreptitious on-and-off relationship. Members of the same squad shouldn’t date, an...more

It's a satisfying feeling - for me at least - to find an author who combines a good story, good characters AND good writing. It shouldn't be hard to find that combination, but it really is. This is the second book I've read in this series featuring a young and strong heroine, Maeve Kerrigan, a Detective Constable who is part of an elite murder squad in London. This is the second in the series. Maeve has been paired with a difficult partner and superior, Josh Derwent, who derides her and too ofte...more

My Speedy Summary...

Maeve, a detective, is involved in finding out who is meticulously murdering some of London's pedophiles... among other crimes.

My Thoughts...

I found this to be a riveting detective story with tons of dysfunctional characters...this included some of the good guys, too. I read this as a stand alone but I truly wish I would have read the first book in this series...The Burning. The central character, Maeve Kerrigan, a detective, was damaged in a way that...more

The Reckoning is a solid follow-up to the very good The Burning, but its differing plot structure and deepening character relationships make it an even bigger winner, in my eyes. It's an emotionally and intellectually thoughtful crime novel, and I find myself liking DC Maeve Kerrigan more and more.

First, Maeve is a well-rounded and believable character. Casey fastidiously shows why Maeve was a good fit for an elite task force: on the job, she's observant and analytical, and her boss clearly has...more

Jane Casey's debut novel The Missing, was a gripping standalone read that never flagged. In a similar way to the TV show of the same name, it took us into the nightmare world of the family left behind when a child goes missing.

Her second book The Burning (although a more standard cops try and catch the bad guys read) was almost as gripping and introduced us to the character of DC Maeve Kerrigan, a tough Irish lass who wouldn't be out of place in a Marian Keyes novel - and I mean that as a compl...more

The second of the D.I. Maeve Kerrigan stories and another enjoyable book from Jane Casey. There is quite a lot happening here, just when you think it's over, although it's clearly not, due to the number of pages left in the book, it continues to hold your interest and holds its pace and intrigue to the end. The story is about a killer/killers (the police can't be sure if there is more than one involved), are targeting paedophiles and torturing them to death. They can't make sense about how the k...more

Maeve Kerrigan is a young London Detective Constable newly partnered with an abrasive and opinionated DI Josh Derwent. Their first case together involves multiple murders of pedophiles who have been released back into the community. The murders turn out to be linked to vengeance and to a pair of missing girls, and the pressure builds to find the girls and stop the killings.

This is a good police procedural with interesting and well drawn characters. Maeve's personal life definitely takes second p...more

This is a really good crime thriller. There are a lot of twists and turns in the case, dealing with murder, abuse, torture, rape, organised crime, kidnap and stalking. Although there is a lot of really rather nasty subject matter here, I never felt like it was gratuitously described... a shocking description adds to the story and urgency, but it doesn't go too far.

I liked the main character, Maeve - she was just self-conscious enough to bring me on side, and her personal life was not too cliche...more

When the young daughter of a mobster goes missing you know there’s going to be trouble.

Cheyenne Skinner is only 14 but appears and acts older and is accustomed to getting her own way. She’s also the only child of John Skinner. When it appears Cheyenne has been taken by a sexual predator, her father launches a vigilante offense.

Violence quickly escalates to murder and tension increases as Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan and her team discover Cheyenne isn’t the only female missing.

Kerrigan migh...more

A lengthy and thoroughly enjoyable read for the who-dunnit fan!

Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan investigates homicides in London. Assigned to a new partner (who, at least superficially, is obnoxious), the two investigate the brutal murders of three convicted pedophiles. The evidence suggests that someone within the police force itself may be exracting revenge on these victims. Yet, while working on these murders, new bodies appear, and the detectives have to consider whether there is a connect...more

I won a copy on Goodreads Firstreads.

This was an advanced reader and not a finished copy. There were a few glitches that I hope they caught and fixed before the final printing They were dropped words and calling the brothers twins, so not big deals but annoying.

This story would fall into the police procedural category. It is set in England, mainly London. The main character is Maeve Kerrigan. One of only two women in the special unit that investigates violent crimes like kidnapping and murder.There...more

I must say up front that I enjoyed this one – it reminded me of early Cath Staincliffe, and the author has created a likeable and well-rounded central character in Maeve Kerrigan. Young, naive, well-intentioned, she’s something a bit different in the central role of a police procedural like this. Her love interest, Rob, never really grabbed me to the same extent. And the decision the author made to have him take over the narrative for a couple of chapters was a bad one – it was very clumsily don...more

The police in London are discovering the tortured and brutally maimed bodies of pedophiles: a priest, a family man, and a societal introvert, all seemingly unrelated in life. Are these acts of vengeance? Thrill seekers? Sadists? And, as the police are questioning even themselves, should the killer be arrested, or given a medal? Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan, a female junior detective in a male-dominated field of work, believes that no matter how heinous the crime, no one deserves the horrif...more

The Reckoning is an engaging plot twisting murder mystery. Just when you think you know where the story is headed, the plot takes a turn pulling you into a new direction keeping you on your toes and guessing where the story might take you next.

The story is told through first person perspective giving you a more thorough view into the main characters thoughts and impressions. Characters are well developed making them seem more realistic. The first half of the book is more of a who done it style m...more

Suspenseful, complicated. Complex characters.

Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is after a murderer. Assigned to the case with the division’s unreadable new DI, Josh Derwent, young and inexperienced Maeve is determined to prove she has what it takes to make it as a female in the tough world of the London police.

But for a killer who strikes with such spectacle, this one is proving remarkably elusive. And when Maeve learns his motive might be about exacting revenge, his acts of incredible violence...more

This began slowly for me but ended strong and deserves a 4 1/2.

The plot: This is the 2nd book in a mystery series featuring British DI (detective inspector) Maeve Kerrigan. In this story she is investigating a series of murders in which the victims are all known sex offenders. The story evolves with each new crime, and a link to a missing girl reveals a whole new crime.

My thoughts: I had a hard time with the beginning, but this book goes surprising places in a fast-paced and well-written format...more

Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan in The Reckoning is paving her way in the British Police Force. She is joined by two new members, Detective Inspector Josh Derwent and Kieth Bryce, transfer to her unit. Their first crime was two brutal beating of a pedophiles following at two crime scenes. Both beatings were inconsistent. The MO were different yet Maeve knew something was off. The more she thought of the crime, the more she started to believe there was a leak in the department which leave to a...more

Jane Casey is proving herself to be a very strong, intelligent and compelling author. I very much enjoyed her previous book, The Burning, and found this one to be equally good. It has so many twists and turns that it is really quite impossible to predict anything, yet still remains relatively believable (within the realm of murder mysteries that is. There are the usual amazing coincidences, but I don't think that detracts from the story at all.) The characters are all interesting and quite human...more

Ugh, too "chick flick" of a female detective for my taste... and the other female detective was, of course, the unexpected lipstick lesbian. Are women still unsure how to be women in the workforce that they have these issues that the heroine has? I am hoping this is just *really* fiction. Otherwise, disturbing. Unbuttoning her blouse? Kissing her boyfriend in the office? Etc. etc. etc. And no, the story was not compelling enough to keep me occupied from being disturbed by those issues. In fact,...more

Casey is definitely getting better as she goes along. #1 (The Missing) was truly dreadful. #2 (The Burning) was pretty good. And this is much better. The dialogue is still a little trying/unbelievable at times, but the doers were not as obvious this time around. My only real complaint: it's great to have a strong, young female detective as the protagonist, but when she is also the target of violence and stalking and harassment, some of which have nothing to do with her job (and none of the other...more

Jane Casey’s new book “The Reckoning” is filled with characters that no one could love. Unfortunately you don’t even like them! I’m not just talking about the pedophiles, murders and general toughs, but the coppers too.
Maeve Kerrigen is a detective who is put on a case to find the killer and torturer of convicted pedophiles. It would be nice if we could like her, but she oft appears hapless, though eventually competent. Arrogant, chauvinistic, macho co-workers surround her. Wait is this the 21st...more

I loved the first book that I read by Jane Casey, the Burning. And this second one did not disappoint. Ms Casey has given us a wonderful protagonist in Maeve Kerrigan. She is flawed, prickly and vulnerable, but at the same time strong and brave. Like a real person, she is a mixture of many qualities and all the more likable and believable for that. The plot of this book is taut and sharp, but at the same time quite convoluted. It could be a recipe for disaster, but Ms Casey pulls it all off and...more

Good sequel. Loving Maeve. Love that her love life is shaping up. As a young attractive Detective she faces chauvinism daily (are the British less evolved than Americans when it comes to police women?). But she certainly has a Sherlockian way of figuring out clues, how to interview subjects and putting puzzle pieces together. She should rise in the ranks (hopefully) in future books. This book is about the sick world of Sadists who abduct women and keep them as slaves, and the sicko world of onli...more

Enjoyable reading. I most enjoyed all the informal British words/phrases Ms.Casey uses as you might expect from someone raised in Dublin. It was fun picking up on some of the local culture. The plot is somewhat novel and moves along well enough. The novelty arises from the the fact that one of the crime fighters is a notorious thug who is an enemy of the police chief, but also is the father of the girl who was kidnapped in the chief's precinct. Our main character is a female detective who must n...more

The Reckoning is the second book in Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series. I loved the first (The Burning), and I think I enjoyed the second even more.

Maeve is an Irish cop, and a woman, and she catches plenty of grief from her London colleagues for both. As a detective constable, she knows she has to put up with it, especially when it comes from her superiors, like Detective Inspector Josh Derwent, new to her team. Fortunately, Superintendent Charles Godley is a good guy to work for, and he recogn...more

A fantastic crime/detective novel. Casey creates a heroine,Maeve, who is flawed but determined, stubborn but brave. Maeve is an amazing detective based in London, whom the reader identifies with and pulls for from the beginning of the novel. Along with the mystery, Casey has written a love story. I could not put this book down! It just grabbed me from page one and flew by. Read it in one day.

I enjoyed this book so much that I ordered another book by this author, The Burning, which I also like very...more

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I'm a big reader of british mysteries and I will be sure to add Jane Casey to my list of must-reads.

The plot in this book revolves around a young girl who goes missing. This young girl isn't anyone ordinary though. Her father is a violent mobster who begins to search for his daughter by systematically torturing and killing sex offenders.

DC Maeve Kerrigan is assigned to the case and she proves to be a very likable character. She shows a great deal of empat...more

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway. There is an understanding that a review will be written, but it is not required.

I really liked this book. It's the second in a series and the first I've read by this author, but reading the prior book isn't required. Maeve Kerrigan is a well-written and complex character and I especially like that most of the book is told by her, in first person point of view. She has a great voice and point of view that took me right into the story. If I went back a...more
