But the police were never able to prove anything and Bibi was set free, with the cloud of suspicion an ...more

Is it a murder mystery? Is it a romance novel? Is it a melodrama? Is it an attempt at all three? A good editor could have improved this book significantly. It galls me when an author uses the same descriptive words repeatedly: the same simile over and over and over; characters telling information at length in dialogue first to one person, then to another, information that author has already explained in great detail, like the reader isn't witness to all three; explaining allusions and metaphors ...more

This book was so disappointing! The first two-thirds of the book were slow and then the mystery finally begins to unravel but there is never a true climax. The characters are so underdeveloped... Especially the villain and his motives. In a good mystery, you never guess the outcome but when the truth comes out, it somehow makes perfect sense. The exact opposite is true here: the outcome is obvious and predictable but still completely unrealistic and forced.

this was a good story. A little weak. I was surprised in the beginning when Mac and Lorenza were old loves, but it weakened from there. I think the author was trying to write a mystery but she fell way short. A lot of details about Bibi and the murder were glazed over. In the romance department it was way to easy. Sunny did not have to really fight for her man. Little Paloma could have been a wonderful character but she was overlooked as well.

It had potential, but it did not meet it.
I think it is a huge stretch to call this a mystery. It's more like a fluffy beach read with some unanswered questions thrown in. Which, by the way, were never answered. Fortunately since I had read one Elizabeth Adler book before I had lowered my expectations. Good for if you don't have anything else to read and don't want to think.

I started this book full of apprehension because of the cover. I wondered if it was a romance novel but the summary said otherwise. A few chapters in, I put the book down. But then I picked it back up because I hate leaving books unfinished. I spent the rest of the book struggling through the awful dialogue and the watered down suspense. I never finished the last part because the mystery was solved. Well, it was over. The book was garbage. The plot was garbage. The characters were garbage.

As far as Elizabeth Adler books go, I was a little disappointed in this one. It started out with an interesting premise - famous singer/actress Bibi Fortunata goes missing (after she is accused of murder but then gets off for lack of evidence) and leaves her 7-year old daughter in the care of her jet-setting and not-to-responsible sister Jazzy. Two years later, the daughter, Paloma, and her relatives need to find Bibi in order to save the family business and fortune. Mac Reilly, a private invest ...more

When I started reading this book I was kind of disappointed. I couldn't get into the story, something was missing... It didn't feel like any Adler-story I know. However, around page 150 it all turned around and once again it was Adler I know. Thanks to her beautiful description of the setting I traveled around Spain. I could visit Barcelona one more time, I could picture this amazing city Cáceres where my friend stayed for a few months (it kind of felt like I was there with her). And the mystery ...more

From the 2nd novel I've read by Elizabeth Adler, and it may well be my last. The last time I was this embarrassed by a novel was while reading the S.C. Stephens Thoughtless Trilogy. However, I'm so tired of this one, despite my compulsive reluctance to leave books unfinished, I will probably ditch it, as I'm already on p. 267, and nothing much has yet happened.

"From Barcelona" is filled with description after description of meals, food, outfits, and especially brand names, so muc

Fair warning, I only got 2/3 through and had to stop reading.

I'd like to give you a quick summary of the plot, but I'm not sure that's possible with all that has been shoved into one book. But I will try.

Bibi is a famous singer who is suspected of murdering her lover and his lover, who was also her best friend. Despite getting off, the scandal ruins her and she sends her daughter away to Spain to live with family and disappears. Later when the family needs to find her they call in Mac Reilly, a

Gostei mas o final foi um tanto precipitado e sem explicações sobre os homicídios (como e porquê). Mas, como sempre, seja em português ou em inglês, os livros desta escritora são de fácil leitura.

From Barcelona, With Love is the fourth novel in the Mac Reilly series, following: One Of Those Malibu Nights, There's Something About St. Tropez and It All Began In Monte Carlo. Mac Reilly and Sunny Alvarez have shared their romance and travelled to many luxurious destinations. You can read these as standalone novels because anything you need to know from the previous novels is recapped so you will not feel as though you are missing information.

From Barcelona, With Love has some mystery, but, t

When Paloma's grasping stepfather threatens to seize custody of both Paloma and Bibi' ...more

When reading a low-brow, just-for-fun junk novel such as the Mack Reilly series, I generally forgive the incongruous plot lines, the unnecessary descriptions of the clothes the characters are wearing, and the problems with poorly handled antecedents. However, I found it unforgivable that the author presented as fact that tired, old, and completely untrue myth about the Castillian ceceo being due to a king with a lisp. I will forgo the linguistic explanation of why this is false, as well as the h ...more

A good escapist read. Elizabeth Adler pulls you into a story very quickly. I love the team of Mac and Sunny; in this installment they meet a young girl on the Malibu beach outside Mac's home and are soon pulled into a case involving her famous mother, who disappeared after being the main suspect in a murder case. The characters are very interesting and the Barcelona setting is beautifully presented. The resolution is a bit too neat, but that's why the book is a great escape!

Famous singer is accused of murdering her lover and his girlfriend (her "best friend"). She leaves her young daughter with one of her sisters and goes into hiding. No one has any idea if she is alive or dead. Two years later the daughter and aunt are living on the same beach in California as a famous tv detective. He rescues the daughter from a near drowning. Later the sister and daughter hire the detective to find the missing singer and save the girl from being taken by the singer's ex-husband ...more

I have a different standard for evaluating audio books versus books I actually read. With audio books, I really expect to be entertained. They have to be good enough to keep my attention while I am cleaning, walking, driving, gardening or doing jigsaw puzzles. They absolutely don't need to (although they can) be classics or mind benders. In fact, one of my favorite books to listen to was a real bodice ripper by Sabrina Jefferies-one I never would have picked up to read. Audio books need to be en ...more

I read this book because it was the next in line, alphabetically, on my tiny library's shelves. it ended up being about what you'd expect from the title and cover illustration: A light PI-style mystery based on movie stars and musicians with complicated back stories, told through detailed descriptions of name brands, wines, the various beautiful characters, and sexual tensions. If your ideal escape is Malibu, or Beverly hills or a winery in Barcelona, then this book offers a pleasant afternoon e ...more
