The illustrations aren't my first choice of style so I made sure to read this a few times in a row, and I'm really glad I did. There's a wealth of detail and charm here that responds to close attention. The bird builds her nest while the pigs build their house, then nestles within her house while the pigs furnish theirs. I love the garden page especially, showing the worms, potatoes, and carrots below the soil and the leaves and insects and activity above. Love the lacey underwear when they take...more
Susan Gal offered up some interesting ideas at the beginning, but chose not to follow those threads. First, she has a whole 1930s moving West theme, which harks to Steinbeck--very ambitious. Second, she has the pigs build a house of bricks as soon as they reach the West. Isn't there a natural 'third' coming up in this sequence? I'm not saying there's only one possible direction, but I was really hoping for her to take those two things and build on them. There was no building. She even brought ex...more

Inspired by a proverb about birds building a nest, this story shows a pig family working hard to make a life that's sweet. Text is simple and follows a specific structure (i.e. brick by brick, pigs build a house; piece by piece, it becomes a home). Artwork combines many textures incorporated into the paintings of pigs and their surroundings. Admittedly the artwork is stronger than the story, but this book is a must see nevertheless.
Day by Day is a piggie story that opens up and welcomes the reader. The pigs are the characters, but they are not the main attraction to the tale. The play and fun with each turn of phrase will capture the reader and invite them to enjoy this book over and over again. It's a simple and sweet book with fun and active illustrations.

Loved the illustrations. Sweet book about community, but with humor in the pictures. Not for the stuffy crowd, since "layer by layer, pigs shed their clothes" after a hard day of gardening and do cannonballs in the mud. Boy bigs are wearing their tightie-whities and girl pigs are wearing lacy slips and camisoles.
Bright and cheerful illustrations add breezyness to the story of a family cooperatively living together. Relies on repetitive openings to each page, "day by day," "kiss by kiss," piece by piece," etc., which makes it soothing to read aloud,
"As the seasons change, the industrious pigs of Day by Day build a home, plant a garden, help their neighbors, and then gather in a harvest grown with hard work and kindness"--
A lovely, lyrical picture book that celebrates community and family. A new storytime favorite!
I love when a book tells us the simple joys of family. Adorable pictures, too.
