I read long ago the book Bob Massie's parents wrote about him and life with hemophilia, and I have seen the Nova episode devoted to his unique health, and I was quite eager to read this memoir. I have to say---it's a rare book that is really too short. Massie mentions at one point he was planning on writing a longer memoir, and I wish he had, or most of all, I wish he had divided this book up. As it is, it's really three books in one---one about his personal life and health (which is extraordina...more
A memoir of resilience, yes, but also of possibilities and incredible energy. This was not an easy book to read, but I kept on with it as I had received it from librarything as a review book, and was curious to see where he went with his compassion and righteousness. By the end I was wanting to hear what people I knew in business and religion thought of his ideas. What an amazing life he has led against challenges many of us would cave under. Many times I thought there was too much preaching, an...more

I am not usually a big nonfiction reader, but the premise of this book grabbed me. The history of struggle with child and adulthood illness, refusal to let that rule life and eventual overcoming resonated with me as did Massie's passionate beliefs in and commitment to what should be basic human rights. I often wonder if struggle in childhood helps individuals see outside of themselves.

While I thought that Massie had a good message, I did not think this read as a classic memoir. It was more like a memoir and a textbook mixed in one. I found in some sections, where he went into detail about certain companies and such, my attention wandering and having to reread them.
I didn't like how he would go on about his work for pages and pages and then just stick in some references to his health battles. I think that as a memoir it would have been be...more

I had high hopes for this book. Bob Massie has had some seemingly insurmountable challenges in his life. Despite this, he has overcome and beaten the odds. His descriptions of his childhood are heartbreaking, but his attitude and strength are truly admirable. Towards the middle of the book though, his story became a bit of a drag. His college years and onward just didn't hold my interest the way his younger years did.

I was so excited to read this memoir as I had been introduced to the author through his parent's amazing book Journey...the story of how the family dealt with the hemophilia diagnosis. When I heard that Bob developed HIV and hepatitis c, I knew I had to read more of this remarkable human being. And this book does not disappoint. What an amazing man...
This is a goodreads book. A Song in the Night: A Memoir of Resilience, is a well written book however it is not my type of book. I wanted it because this young man had hemophilia and I was interested in knowing how he was able to live with his afflictions. I found that he talked more of his views of the world around him. This is not really not my type of book.
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway.
I usually really enjoy memoirs, and there are parts of this book that I did really enjoy. But, as another reviewer said, it felt more textbook-ish at times than like a personal memoir, which made it harder for me to get through it. Still, I am interested in reading up more about his childhood illness.

This is an autobiography of a hemophiliac in the United States who has overcome many obstacles in his life and has made a difference in all that he has done. He reported on the Mandela election in South Africa, led two international non-profit organizations and ran for office twice. This is a very inspiring story!
