Life is Short and Desire Endless
Winner of the 2010 Prix Femina, this delicious novel revolves around a classic love triangle: two men and one woman. She is English, they are French and American. The Frenchman is married, the American is not. None of this makes any difference. The woman—elusive, unreliable, a classic femme fatale—flits back and forth between her two lovers, driving them both mad.

He put an exploratory hand on her thigh, but she removed it and turned to face him. I want to know what you think of the book, she said.
Ah, he replied, conscious that he might be entering dangerous territory, it's well-written. But I found it a bit dull in places.
I'm sorry? he said.
Something from Simone de Beauvoir. It doesn't matter.

Woody Allen once said that the heart wants what the heart wants. (We won't go into the circumstances that prompted that musing, because ew!) Patrick Lapeyre takes that notion to heart in this book. Boy, does he ever.
Two men, a frenchman named Blériot and an American named Murphy, want Nora Neville, an English woman with some French ancestry. Blériot is married, but directionless. His "career" consists of working as a freelance translator, but he doesn't really like his job, nor is he motivated t...more

I picked up Life is Short and Desire Endless from a group of blasé looking hipsters at the Brooklyn Book Festival (go figure). I was drawn to the book because it’s about a love triangle, and I myself seem to have a propensity for ending up in love triangles (where I usually get the crap end of the deal), so reading about similar people in miserable situations suits me.

Ah, the French.
I chose this book because I like the title and the publisher, Other Books.
In a nutshell, Nora is a beguiling young woman. Specifically, in the scope of these pages, she has enamored both Bleriot (I am missing an accent mark over the e, forgive me) in Paris, and Murphy in London. It does not matter how or why she has them so smitten, we just know that they are, and that she is a magical enchantress, made even more so by her inability to be "captured" and "tamed" fully by either of...more

There are some witty turns of phrase and great imagery but the plot in general is vague and directionless. Character development is also weak which is a disaster for a character-driven story as this was supposed to be.
Yes, the affair story has been told time and again but I was hoping for something more creative, surprising. Here, the reader is simply expected to take for granted that these three people are in love. It isn't even made clear what their appeal to one another is. As the story progr...more

This book is told from the points of view of people who love, or have loved Nora. Nora seems like a plain enough woman, but she has a way over these 3 people: Louis Bleriot, Murphy Blomdale & Victoria. She drives them to depths of despair with longing for her, but she also ignites passions in them they've never before expereinced feeling for anyone else. This book really captures the best and the worst parts of being ferociously in love with someone.
