I truly struggled to work my way thru 50% of this book. I ended up not being able to truly finish it although I did skim thru to the end. I understand what the author was trying to do and I appreciate it but... Dear god the female lead is so truly insane it ended up being annoying and not funny to me.

This was enjoyable chick lit with a little voodoo and witchcraft thrown in for comic relief. Both paranormal items were the chicanery variety; there, I think to show the depths to which a desire for love can drive us. In the end, of course, the energy put into her wishful thinking turns the other way.

I enjoyed the characters, except for the terrible man who breaks it off with the heroine. And, I liked that the story was not quite as predictable as I thought it would be. It still follows the chick lit plot pattern of girl meets boy, loses boy, goes wacky, changes life,... but with a few twists. We expect certain things from chick lit — crises in the life of a young woman or women. The crises are often multiple and interwoven, like in life, and center around love, lifestyle, friends, job and family. This is no different but there are enough twists to have kept me interested.

It is written in distinctly British English. With some words requiring me to Google them. For example, a "goujon" is something we would be likely to call a strip or tender. Most of the other wonky words will be understood by readers of popular British fiction.

The writing is light and funny, but like much of the genre touches deeper emotions and needs like independence, hurt, addiction, loneliness. There were a few real laughs as I read.

There are, the Greeks said, only a certain number of stories, so in a genre like this whether a book is worth my time and money is whether it touches a nerve through it's humor and poignancy. In Ashleigh I see my long ago self, family members and friends who have been cruelly and inexplicably abandoned by a partner.

When you think you're building a life together based on the norms of civilized behavior, having that picture of togetherness turned into a lonely portrait can suck you into a vortex like a lifestyle tornado. It's the death of an imagined future. Manby gets that and brings it out in GETTING OVER MR. RIGHT. There's the suggestion by friends that Ashleigh over processed the boyfriend, Michael's, feelings for her and his commitment. This often comes from a character's paired up friends and here marginalizes Ashleigh's pain.

Ultimately, Ashleigh depends on her own skills with a bit of mutual family assistance to pull herself out of the pit her life becomes. Her life becomes more about self development than "getting married."

This would be a great beach or travel read.

It does appear this is a re-release of a book published in the UK in 2010 by Hodder Ome/Hodder and Stoughton under the same title. I don't know if it has undergone significant editorial change.(less)

I’ll admit right off the bat that chick lit is not my favorite genre. I’m generally more annoyed than charmed by man-crazy thirtysomethings with out of control lives. And yet, I’ve had my heart broken and had a hard time getting over someone who wasn’t worthy of me in the first place, so I thought I might...more I’ll admit right off the bat that chick lit is not my favorite genre. Not so much. While I’m certain that many readers will find this book a delight, I was annoyed by the idiocy of the protagonist. Ashleigh begins her tale of woe with a rundown of all the romantic disasters that have plagued her life, until she finally meets a man who sticks around for more than a couple of weeks. Their relationship isn’t exactly perfect, but Ashleigh decides that since Michael hasn’t run off yet, he must be The One. Then one day, Michael dumps her via Facebook, won’t answer her texts, and defriends her. Instead of getting a clue, she decides to devote all her energy to getting him back. She makes a complete and utter fool of herself proposing to him at his office, stalking him, and then learning everything she can about his new girlfriend until her entire life completely falls apart. Even then, she refuses to get a clue. I got impatient with her downward spiral long before she put on the brakes, but she finally starts to turn her life around. Most unsatisfyingly, it happens pretty much by accident and she has to be forced into it and have her hand held. And she remains stubbornly clueless where Michael is concerned.

I have never bought into the theory that a woman is nothing until she gets a ring on her finger, and I’ve never believed that having any man at all is preferable to none, so I spent the entire book wanting to smack Ashleigh upside the head with a golf club. That said, this was a fairly well written book, and I do think that someone with a different philosophy on life might actually enjoy it. Especially any woman who has lost her head after having her heart broken. I just thought Ashleigh was a fool and it took far too long for her to catch on and get her life back together.

Sadly speaking, this book didn't turn out as well as I expected it to be, especially coming from one of my favourite chic lit writer - Chris Manby. For someone who was dumped via Facebook, Ashiegh took an annoyingly long time to get over his boyfriend and unshamefully committing lots of irksome and childish acts just because of this boyfriend.

Characters:
Ashleigh is not like any character I have read before! As the reader you have mixed feelings for her you feel sorry for her being dumped in such a horrible way and the poor girl is heartbroken but then as the book goes on you start to think this woman isn't quite all there but this is what brings the humour to the book.
Michael her ex boyfriend is not really a character I warmed through partly because we do not get to read much about his character and also because the bits we do read about his character make you dislike him even more which makes it hard for us to see what Ashleigh sees in him in the first place.

My Opinion:
I didn't know what to expect from this book as like I mentioned before Chrissie Manby is a new author to me so I had no previous knowledge of her books to compare to. I can now say that I wouldn't walk over a Chrissie Manby book again as this book was very enjoyable, so much so I read it in under 24 hours! For me it had every element you could want in a great read. The romance, the humour, the suspense of not knowing what this crazy but loving woman was going to go to next. I found that straight from the first chapter I was hooked on the story. The story flowed along nicely through the book with no low dull points to the book. I also thought the ending was wrapped up nicely without feeling rushed.

You need to have a sense of humour when reading this book as many parts of the book were farfetched as I cannot see women actually going to these extremes to get an ex-boyfriend back ( well I do hope not anyway!)
I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick and easy read with a little light hearted humour. I will be looking out for another Chrissie Manby book after this one.

It was one of those that I probably wouldn't have picked up had I not needed a second book to get free (by one get one free / 1/2 price / 3 for 2 offers are my downfall). I'm not all that familiar with the author so I didn't have any preconceived ideas about it in that way.

This is the first book I've read by Ms Manby and I wasn't disappointed. I borrowed the book from my local library in the morning and finished it that evening - I couldn't put it down. Snarky Ashleigh had me laughing out loud at her antics and cringeing with embarrassment at the same time.

Having alienating friends, losing her job, ending up have to move back home, and multiple people telling her she needs professional help. Ashleigh finally realizes that maybe she dose need some new perspective, but will it be late and what if Michael starts to talk to her again.

British chick lit that can cross cultural lines, that is relatable. Ashleigh was built as a character that just about any female could relate to, having done or wanted to do something like she does in the book. Ashleigh does take it to an extreme and finally realizing that is what helps her slowly breakout of parts of it. I think it does get to a point where it does get harder to relate to Ashleigh since you really just want to tell her, no you didn't do that or just stop, but she kept going. Or she would start to change and you though she got behind some growth and then back again. I appreciated how the character had grown at the end, but getting there was tough at times.

I would give it three stars as it 3 stars. It is a good read and flew by, but didn't have much substance. It was a fun read and fun to think what would happen if you did some or any of the vengeful thing in this plot, but at the end of the day it isn't deep.(less)

I received a copy of Getting Over Mr. Right through one of the giveaways courtesy of First Reads (thank you!). And overall, I enjoyed this one. By no means was it amazing or life-altering, but it was a fun read. Definitely fitting in with typical chick lit.

Thirty-two year old Ashleigh has been dating Michael - the man she wants to marry - for almost two years. After several mishaps with other men (including a botched first kiss and an awkward proposal of trying to get rid of her virginity), she finally thinks - YES. THIS IS THE ONE.

Of course, how could a story begin with happily ever after?

Michael dumps her in a terrible and inappropriate way, and this is the catalyst for the breakdown and all the madness that follows. Some of the crazy things that she does to either get over Michael or to win him back may strike some readers familiar since I'm sure most of us have gone temporarily insane trying to do either of those. (Well, how well did that work out for you?) So take the crazy things that 95% of the population has done. Now think of the crazy things that the remaining 5% has done. That's where Ashleigh goes. And it was fun to go on those adventures with her.

Ashleigh is not a very likable character through the majority of the book, but I give her the benefit of the doubt since she does go crazy trying to win Michael back.And thinking back to my own crazy days post-breakups, I'm sure that I was not the best person to be around. But at the same time, at certain points she was either so damn annoying or crazy that I didn't want to read on. That is probably my biggest complaint. Also, sometimes the wording is different. When it comes to cursing, an F-bomb would be dropped, but then later on, it would look like f***, which was a little strange. And also c*nt was referenced twice, but not used. I suppose it's a matter of style, and I can appreciate it, but it was just a little detail that was different and would throw me for a minute.

I really like the synopsis on the back of the book - how Ashleigh's actions will make you feel better about yourself - which is kind of true. The length of embarrassment, financial distress, and terrible decision making.... it all leads down that this was a good book to have by the pool. An easy read that made me shake my head quite a bit, but overall, it was good.

So if you find yourself wanting to see that someone else has been there, done that, and now written a book about it, go for it.(less)

Holy crap, I was laughing so hard it was difficult to concentrate. I have never been in a formal relationship, well, one, but that only lasted like two months so I really don't count it, but I have been with friends who have had multiple relationships and most of them have been the dumped. It’s always a pleasure to have a break between all my books to get into another genre. The Chick-lit has always been something different to read, something that allows to change a little my ideas.

Getting over Mr. Right was a fast read, well it’s not a big book either and the writing style is really fluid, so we can have a pleasant moment. I confess I was immediately attracted by the synopsis. Mainly when I saw the words “voodoo curse” and “witchcraft”, I knew this book would be fun and I was curious to learn more about it.

What can I say about the story? Ashleigh had a lot of love deceptions but now she is in couple for two years with the same man, she waits for only one thing: his wedding proposal and after that to have a family with him. What a surprise when he decides that he doesn’t want to marry her and doesn’t even want to stay with her at all! And the worse happens when she learns that her boyfriend was in the arms of another woman just after this event. From that moment the life of our heroine is shocked at the highest point.

From the start of the book, we understand that the separation won’t be easy and that Ashleigh will do anything for changing his mind. And of course for nothing in return. She is an interesting character to follow and in the same time I think it’s always a little too much (and even more than that). Like in all this kind of stories, her obsession will upset all the persons she cares about. But we understand them perfectly, and with her rupture, our heroine doesn’t realize she becomes really selfish. She ruins everything and even blames those around her for all that happens.

It’s true it’s was a funny and pleasant story to read but I think it might be a little too much. Ashleigh becomes so obsessed and acts so strangely that it’s very difficult to understand her. Well it’s complicated for her, we know that, but she needs a limit.
We don’t really know all along the story if she learned something about all of this or if she would do the same thing if she could, which is unfortunate.

However, it was a refreshing and not complicated read, something nice to change a little.(less)

Out of Chrissie Manby’s (or Chris Manby, which is the name she went by until last year) 14 books I’ve read quite a few of them and I’ve found myself quite enjoying them although there has been the odd strange one. Her books, one from the next, are never similar in any way which can make it difficult to tell if a book is one of Chrissie’s (hypothetically, if books didn’t have authors names on). I mean I read The Matchbreaker a couple of years ago and I just wasn’t a fan of that book, it was a bit… odd (and not like her other rom-coms) so I didn’t read another until I managed to get my hands of Spa Wars which I really liked and it seemed as though Chrissie was back to her best so when I saw the synopsis for Getting Over Mr Right I was intrigued and was so thrilled to be sent a copy to review.

Getting Over Mr Right starts with a prologue with Ashleigh telling us that she was dumped via Facebook. Now, that has got to be one of the most humiliating ways to be dumped, no? We then go back through Ashleigh’s dating history, from the first boy she ever kissed all the way through to her meeting with Michael and it seems that Ashleigh hasn’t had the best of boyfriends. Ever. So when she meets Michael, it is, conveniently, right after she swears off men. We learn how Ashleigh and Michael got together and how their relationship got to such a point that Michael dumps Ashleigh on Facebook. For me, that is where the book really begins because from that point on, it is total madness. The tag line for the book reads: “Been dumped? Get mad… But not this mad.” and I can’t actually believe how mad ‘this mad’ actually became!

It really is quite astounding how far Ashleigh is willing to go to get Michael back. It kind of reminded me of Lucy Dawson’s books His Other Lover but without the dark overtones (well, they’re less dark anyway). Ashleigh really does push the boundaries when it comes to trying to get Michael back and, at times, I found myself cringing because it was all just too much! I wanted to give her a shake and tell her to smell the coffee. And yet that’s what makes Ashleigh so likeable. I’m sure a lot of women have suffered the kind of heartbreak Ashleigh suffers and I’m also sure a lot of people will nod along as they read just what Ashleigh does as she tries desperately to win Michael back. A few of the things are a little bonkers and there’s a certain part of the book where Ashleigh is just down right mean but, overall, it was fun, if a little sad to see Ashleigh put herself through so much.

As I said, Ashleigh despite all of her madcap schemes is a likeable character. I was surprised I liked her so much actually because she could, possibly, come across as a bit of a drip. While there is that understandable heartbroken side, some will think that you know, she should just get over it and thankfully Chrissie manages to balance Ashleigh perfectly. She has her moments, sure, but overall I liked her. There aren’t many other main characters within the book, but I’ll tell you now that I didn’t like Michael. At all. Ever. All I wanted Ashleigh to do was to wake up and realise he totally wasn’t worth all of her tears and all of her madness. He never came across as likeable at any point throughout the book. One character I did love was Becky, Ashleigh’s best friend. She let Ashleigh wallow for a while but then put up her tough girl act to try and get Ashleigh to snap out of it. I thought she was a fab character and well worthy of her best friends status. Ashleigh’s family are quite important to the book and I thought Ashleigh, her mum, her dad and brother all had a great dynamic and seemed to get along (for the most part) great.

Chrissie is quite a fantastic writer, Getting Over Mr Right flowed perfectly for me and even when Ashleigh was at her most mad, I still wanted to carry on reading to see how it was all going to pan out. I managed to finish the entire book in just over 4 hours and I just couldn’t put it down. Writing the book entirely from Ashleigh’s perspective was a fantastic idea because I could really get to know Ashleigh and it helped me be able to read the book as quickly as I did. Chrissie even managed to add some humourous moments into the book, one scene in particular had me in stitches and there was also, surprisingly, a rather sad and touching moment which I saw coming a mile off but it still managed mad me feel sad.

Getting Over Mr Right is definitely worth a read and although it does have some cringe-worthy moments I did enjoy it. I did, at times, want to give Ashleigh a good slap because some of her ideas were a bit stupid but overall I thought it was a quick and enjoyable read. It’s definitely one to pack in your beach bags this summer and hey, maybe if you’re suffering a break up yourself, it could help you get over it. Particularly if you’re thinking of doing what Ashleigh does.(less)

At times, the book provided a great laugh for how insane Ashleigh handed the fall out of her relationship. Other times, it was almost cringe-worthy just how insane Ashleigh was. I had to force myself to finish the book because after a while, I began to really hate Ashleigh. I was no longer rooting for her to snap out of it and come out on top. Overall, I think this is a story woman can really relate too.. at least, everyone can attest to encountering an "Ashleigh" at some point in there lives.

The writing is in first person of a delusional and drama-filled young woman, Ashleigh, who gets dumped by her boyfriend, on Facebook. I didn't connect with the main character and I didn't agree with the things she did. I wanted her to be stronger than she was, and resist always going back to Mr. Wrong. But I understand that when people are in love, we do many things that a lot of others don't agree with. It took a lot for her to get over him.

The writing was great, and the story was cute. Too bad I didn't connect more to the main character. But this is my opinion and everyone is different.
