I will be perfectly honest...when I first chose this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. It was out of my comfort zone, and I was a little bit nervous about reading it. I'm used to reading paranormal and Young Adult books. HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised when I read the book.

I am FINALLY DONE!
I keot skipping this book for others but I was peeved At Diego's idiocies-big mouth!!! The ending was a cliff hanging dud so much build,Up climax to then flop! Its All good though, there is another book following this one, just out And I shall read it soon to wrap Up this series with a pretty bow! This is fantastic.Loved that justice was rendered served...for now, anyway. How Diego And Alex relationship is taking Off And I am still gaping mouthed with Serge, too wee!!!

Most of my blog and twitter followers know that I love a good romantic suspense. I love the heightened emotions and truly I love to read about the villain getting his. I'm also a fan of historical fiction and so I was very excited to read this book by Harriet.

Let me start with the parts of the book I thought were done well, the historical research and the suspense. The history included in this book is fascinating and I loved how it was presented. I love the heightened emotions and truly I love to read about the villain getting his. I'm also a fan of historical fiction and so I was very excited to read this book by Harriet.

Let me start with the parts of the book I thought were done well, the historical research and the suspense. The history included in this book is fascinating and I loved how it was presented. When the story was done, I immediately wanted to look up some of the things Harriet mentioned to see how much was creativity on her part and how much of it was real history. It's really amazing stuff!

I also thought she created a compelling suspense story and the characters she created to move the suspense forward were interesting. She plotted the suspense portion of this story extremely well and it's not only fast paced, but you do keep trying to guess how this can come to a end, especially in light of the historical aspects of the story.

What didn't work for me was the romance. Honestly, this book would have been so much better for me if it was a straight up suspense without the romance included. This might not be true for everyone as the reasons I have for the romance not working might not bother another reader. I can't go into too much detail in order not to let out any spoilers, but I just never bought into the romance situation or time-frame that it occurs in.

Likewise, the heroine is so different seeming between her suspense scenes vs. her romantic scenes it was to follow her story and believe in her romantic actions. It was hard to connect with the heroine since I didn't agree with what was going on romantically, which disappointed me since based on the first few chapters I really wanted to cheer for this character.

Style wise, the story set-up and flow were very well done but there were a few scenes that head-hopping pulled me out of the action sometimes. Mostly though, I was really into the historical story and also the suspense storyline and found that it propelled me along even if I wanted to forget the romantic plot that just didn't jive for me. It seemed almost as if the romance had been added to the story later to fit around the suspense.

Again, this would have made an excellent straight suspense story and the Scottish history alone is fascinating and worth the read. Harriet moves a story along very well and her story was very entertaining. The romance just went into territory I couldn't buy in to so that didn't work, but it might for other readers. If you like Scottish history and suspense I think you'll enjoy this book for those alone!(less)

Don't let this books title or cover fool you. This is a romantic suspense/mystery all tied into one.

There is a bit of a slow start, and a very sad start. About 1/4th of the way in it gets rolling and you are thrust into the mystery of why a man was suddenly murdered and how a 700 year vow and a father's choices led to it.

Legacy of the Highlands by Harriet Schultz was a book which I could not put away! When I started reading it, I did not know what to expect, but when the author contacted me, the blurb caught my eye and honestly, I am glad that I read it. The one exception being the romance between the two main characters.

Will’s brutal murder happens within the first two chapters. He and his wife Alex have a seemingly perfect marriage. The two are clearly soul mates, so it makes sense that Alex would be utterly devastated when Will dies. In fact, Ms. Schultz does a remarkable job capturing Alex’s broken spirit and despair. I could almost feel my heart breaking with hers. At the funeral, Alex starts to reconnect with Will’s former best friend, Diego. Alex is in such a terrible state that she turns to Diego for help. Fortunately, Diego is obscenely wealthy and whisks Alex away to his home in Miami on his family’s private jet.

Alex takes a few months to recover in Florida, but while she’s there, she begins to notice that she is drawn to Diego in more than a friendly way. This is the part of the story I had a problem with. As readers, we know that Alex was so heartbroken and lost after Will’s death, that it was debatable as to whether or not she would recover. And only a few months later, she’s lusting after her dead husband’s best friend. Granted, we do see Alex struggle with this same issue, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. And I certainly couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that Diego was encouraging it. It’s one thing for a grieving widow to feel some confusion in her feelings, but at times it felt like Diego was taking advantage of it. That didn’t work for me.

That said, the adventure in this story is great. The characters were real people – Ms. Schultz is extremely good at showing personalities though conversations and word choice. Though the story focuses on Alex and Diego, their budding romance isn’t the centerpiece. It’s more about how they are both out to avenge Will’s murder. Throw in a supporting cast complete with off-the-wall best friend, smug bodyguard, and a legion of Scottish terrorists, and you’re in for a wild ride.

She tells him she has to get to Logan Airport and get out of Boston and soon thereafter she is comfortably resting and recovering in Diego's Florida home, a luxurious retreat where rest and food prepared by a caring maid allows Alex to begin the healing process. But Diego has something to confess to Alex as well as his overwhelming feelings for her that are beginning to slip out. More and more, she is also responding to him, a rather incredible response given the depth of her love for Will and the short passage of time since his death. Whatever is happening here?

The plot thickens as a family secret and an ultimate betrayal connected with Scotland begins to emerge. Scotland has small segments of its population who want separation from England and have signed a certain document in which members of an elite group vow to do everything possible to further the cause of separation from England - and not peaceful. Yes, financial and other agreements leading to Scottish independence are not enough for this group, and Will becomes the means to punish the one who chose other priorities. How will they do it? The story moves from Boston to Florida to Boston to Scotland and back home to Boston. Will's family is guarding some devastating facts that prove to be unforgiveable. Punish the family before the betrayer. But they don't realize that Diego and his bodyguard, a former Massad agent, have different plans and they are not peaceful either? How much will Alex play along?

Harriet Schultz has written a fascinating mystery/thriller novel. There's a bit too much of waiting for the story to evolve but it's worth the wait as events begin to spin out of control both on the personal front between Diego and Alex and on the international front for those seeking revenge. I want you to know that after the first few pages, this story jumped into high gear, and I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was going on. Why had this murder happened? And even when it was explained, I wanted to know more.

The next knock on Alex’s condo door is not her husband who had forgotten his key, it is the form of Detective O’Shea, explaining to Alex that her husband was killed in an alley just a few short yards away. The scene was quite bloody. No items were taken, such as a wallet, which takes away the robbery angle - only an odd Scottish dagger was found, left by Will’s side that made it look like an actual ‘calling card’. Alex barely understands what’s going on. In fact, if not for her best friend Francie showing up and taking over, Alex would’ve fallen apart all together.

When the funeral arrives, a man by the name of Diego Navarro appears to pay his respects. For a good, long time Diego and Will were friends until they had a falling out that neither ever explained. These boyhood friends had simply gone their separate ways and never spoke again. Diego, however, still refers to Will as family and he, his money, his private jet, and unlimited resources turn out to be the bright light for Alex. Going with Diego to his mansion in Miami, Alex finds an escape from Boston and Will’s cold, unfeeling parents. In Florida, surrounded by Diego’s lovely house staff, she can try to regroup from losing the man she so loved who was murdered in a way that no one can explain.

Now Will’s parents back in Boston have their own secrets. Mom, Anne, is beyond angry. She can’t believe that because of her husband’s ridiculous Scottish ancestors and his need to funnel money to tartan terrorists to further his own father’s quest for Scottish independence, may have just taken her only son away from her.

She is so disgusted with her husband that she can barely breathe, wondering if it is really possible that some splinter group vying for freedom from England actually killed her son. Anne will stop at nothing to flay her husband for his mistakes, while they dig deep to find out who exactly proposed this sentence of death on the Cameron bloodline.

While Alex sits in Florida and tries to regroup, she looks back on the one time she and Will visited Scotland on vacation, and ended up meeting a man named Mackinnon, who walked them through their lineage, and had Will so excited about his ancestors that he was practically a giddy child while they were there. But as the memories all come together and more and more information is unveiled about Will’s parents, Diego Navarro, secret agents, undercover fighters, and more, begin to unveil the secrets and lies that each have been keeping.

With each page and each new character and plot, this story goes from good to great, as the shots of adrenaline begin to flow. Not to mention, every time you believe you have a handle on the ‘back-story,’ you end up wrong. The plot thickens as past mistakes, legendary documents, and a huge secret comes to life that is definitely placed in the category of the ‘sins of the parent.’

With shades of James Bond, Nick and Nora Charles, - even a little Sherlock Holmes - this particular author has made sure to offer up very cool history, locales and characters that make you read the book so fast that you turn around and start all over in order to get that thrill again!

It has been a while since I have read a romantic suspense and I was ready to read something a little more adult after all the YA's I have been reading lately, don't get me wrong, I love the YA genre but sometimes you just need something that doesn't involve teenage angst and all that comes with it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story moved at a brisk pace and was a real page turner for me. I'm generally a very slow reader but I read this one in record time. Well... not sure what to do with this book. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

Here's what I liked:
* Serge's character - I especially like the way the author describes him as a "buff Brad Pitt" at one point. He stayed true to character, even though he made a few mistakes. But that's where the interest and drama are at!

LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS is a fast-moving, entertaining story of love, honor and family, which is carried off with great panache. The characters are all realistic and three-dimensional, especially lead protagonist Alexandra Cameron, who is portrayed with much sympathy, but for whom the reader never feels pity. Alexandra is alternately spunky, fun, serious, sensual, and the reader is always on her side, never becoming obnoxious or unsympathetic. Her relationship with Diego is spirited and one never knows where it will lead, which is a good source of suspense in the story. The intrigue plotline could have turned into an espionage caper in lesser hands, but it is always related to the characters, and tied in well. Overall I cannot fault the story, but, there is one element I wished I could have seen more of.

The character of Anne Cameron, Will’s waspish, haughty mother, was a fascinating counterpoint in the story to the other characters. I would have liked to have had an even closer glimpse into her psyche, but, in retrospect, her presence is heavily felt whenever she is in the story, and, maybe this does work in the way that the focus is on Alexandra and Diego, and the supporting characters such as Anne are utilized to great degree. I was satisfied by the ending which, while not addressing all of the story’s loose ends, serves its purpose in a realistic manner as life is never totally cut and dry. From a story standpoint, the ending leaves the door open to further stories which can be explored at some stage with the central characters. If you are looking for a book which offers a little bit of everything, I highly recommend LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS.

I started off reading Lust and Honor by Harriet Schultz and ended up thrilled by the story, yet disappointed it was just a teaser. My disappointment turned into excitement when I discovered the continued story in Legacy of the Highlands. I really enjoyed this fast moving love story that involved my favourite country (Scotland); I look forward to seeing if there is more to this story as it did end in a manner that it could continue. Cudos to the author.

A well written, exciting story. Anxiously awaiting the next book that HAS TO BE continuing the story. Enjoyed traveling to FL convalescing with Alex and the romance dance she and Diego played and the travels to Highlands of Ireland. Would love to learn more about her best friend (Francie), her husband and Serge (could he come be my bodyguard?). Fun, fast reading that had me hooked from the first day.

This story has it all - love lost, heartache, despair, romance, intrigue, suspense and mystery. An awesome mystery with a little Scottish thrown in and I knew would be hooked. My only regret was reading this over the Christmas holidays. Otherwise the book would not have left my hands until it was complete. I loved the historical infusion into the story.
