Chill Run – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds Desserts

Eddie bit down hard to avoid himself from trembling. The finger that his father used to point at him came from the same hand that used to spank him. Wait a minute. Why am I being scared? This is why I’m always on the ropes, because my father always instilled fear in me. Edward’s eyes narrowed as he spoke. “You quit school, left this house on your own, and got that little job at the bookst...more

After writing three novels and selling two of them cheap online, Eddie is desperate to have a publisher take his third book. Joking around with his friends, Corey and Jordyn, they conjure up a plan to get his name in the media which will hopefully get him published through his notoriety. The plan goes a little wrong when instead of being caught in a compromising situation with a famous person, that person ends up dead and Eddie and Corey are framed for the mur...more

When I was reading the summary, I found myself wondering whether the author was the character in the book. Thanks to the wonders of Google, it sounds like it is indeed fiction. Whew, because I wouldn’t really want anyone to experience what the main character, Eddie, went through…or do the ends justify the means? (You’ll have to read to find out…)

Chill Run starts midway through Eddie’s story, and the author does a great job of immediately immersing you in the m...more

Chill Run by Russell Brooks is a reasonably entertaining and breezy crime thriller, with a nice fast pace and some engaging characters.

The novel’s strength lies in its well depicted main characters, still full of youthful dreams and plans, even if a bit world weary around the edges. The author does a fine job of letting the reader empathize with Eddie, Corey and Jordyn, by presenting them not only as normal, capable people, but also as rash, impulsive, moody and desperate as the situation warran...more

Chill Run by Russell Brooks: Review

Another action packed book from Russell Brooks that moves at a cinematic pace intermingled with descriptive suspense treats here and there. From the first page I was blown away and had my blood temperature chilled, which is not a surprise after all the book is entitled Chill Run.

The story opens with Eddie Barrow Jr, an under achieving writer, is lying down on some hard wooden floor, with blood oozing from a bullet wound on his shoulder. His arms and legs are nu...more

*Note: I was sent a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All opinions in this review are solely my own.

When I received this novel, I was unsure of what to expect. When offered the novel, I accepted quickly as it was one of the first books I was ever to be offered for review. It was a thriller- a very good thriller. Sadly, I'm not an ideal audience for the novel. I have to really, really enjoy a thriller to enjoy it personally. The characters were fun and the plot was short but i...more

Eddie Barrow wants to be an author, but has problems finding a publisher who is willing to publish Eddie’s books. So he must sell them online himself, but doesn’t make a lot of money on that. He is the black sheep of his family, the only one who failed. He has a perfect sister and even his parents doesn’t hesitate to tell him how much he has failed in everything.

He thinks that he need a publicity stunt, so the publisher will know his name. It doesn’t matter what kind of publicity stunt it is....more

So, the good? This is an enjoyable, fast-paced thriller with likeable characters set in the cold harshness of a Canadian winter. The dialogue between Eddie, Corey and Jordyn is just what you would expect from three best friends who have known each other for a long time – it’s jovial banter which often raises a smile. Hapless Eddie is easy to empathise with and the brotherly bond between him and Corey goes back to when they first met, as young...more

Another thriller by Russell Brooks, the overall plot of this story is clever and intriguing. This storyline has the makings of a great suspense novel. From the moment Eddie agrees to engage in the unfamiliar world of S&M just to get his name out there, this book is full of small surprises and big adventure until it reaches a shocking climax. The pacing of the story is good, and each event pushes the story further long in a way that generally makes sense. The writing is clear, and the result...more

By Russell Brooks

For those of you who read Pandora's Succession and, like me, would be prepared for a similar, new thriller...

You're in for a real surprise...and a treat...once you adjust to the story line. I admit that at first, as I started to read about "sexual doms" I didn't know what was coming, but soon I started to smile, laugh, and imagine just how an idea like this could be born--our world thrives on such things after all!

For Eddie Barrow wanted to become a published author. Hi...more

When you pour your heart and soul into your work, you find it greatly disheartening when success does not immediately follow. To what lengths are some people willing to go to become the success they believe they are meant to be.

In Chill Run by Russell Brooks, we follow the escapades of Eddie Barrow Jr. as his life begins to unravel. A writer, he is on his last bit of hope, his family does not believe in him, and the rejection letters are coming fast and furious. It seems only his best friend Co...more

Russell Brooks places immigrant Canadians Eddie and Corey in some intriguingly dangerous situations in his new novel Chill Run. Eddie wonders why his family ever moved from Barbados. He wonders why he paid four thousand dollars for a car that barely runs. And he wonders why his best friend and room-mate won’t get a job and pay the rent.
Eddie’s world in the back streets of Montreal is very convincingly portrayed, from French speaking policemen, to the difference between Trinidadian and Barbadian...more

Russell Brooks afforded me the opportunity to read his new book, Chill Run, which is due to be released in December 2011. I was asked to review the book and was not compensated in anyway for my review. Chill Run is an interesting face paced thriller. I read the book in a few hours, as I was eager to see what happened at the end. It was a thrilling page-turner that grabbed my attention from the first few pages. The book was written in English with a little French sprinkled in which I felt added t...more

I liked Eddie. He's this regular guy that is struggling to make his dream of becoming a published author one day. His strongest supporters are his unemployed best friend and his best friend's girlfriend who happens to be a dominatrix. This trio is written with a strong bond that goes far beyond what most friends would probably do for you. This makes me like them all the better! I mean seriously friends that do everything they can while you're a fugitive on the run from the cops and risking thei...more

Kindle freebee: I really liked the story line - hence 4 stars. Some may feel the ending was a little too perfect, but in general I found the book hard to put down. It starts out slow but picks up and really tales off.

This book has a great storyline which gets going right from the start. I instantly liked the characters and I thought that Eddie and Corey made a great duo, I very often found myself chuckling at them!

I loved the fact that Eddie was a writer who was trying to get published, I think that the desperation he felt at trying to get published was very true to life and came across as realistic.

I really felt for him when everything started going wrong following the plan that they had come up with. It se...more

Desperation creates inspiration in Russell Brooks’ CHILL RUN.

When Eddie Barrow, Jr. decides to use a publicity stunt to get a book deal, everything that can go wrong with it can and will. His client is murdered, and he is framed for it. Now he’s on the run with his two friends, but he soon learns that real life can be stranger—and more dangerous—than fiction.

While the story is entertaining and the characters enjoyable, I felt everything was wrapped up in too neat a bow, and the story line reached places that were a little too convenient for me. Convenience in the wife of the first victim being a former part of the publishing world. The neat bows at the end where every character that was a "good guy" found their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (including the restaurant owner) and how each one spelled it out to Eddie in the end.

When I first started reading, I was taken on thrill ride which I never wanted to end. I was never a fan of suspense novels, but"Chill Run" has made me not just a fan, but a follower of Russell Brook's work. I met characters I could relate to, and also could see myself sitting down having a cup of coffee with! My attention was held while reading and that is something I never thought a suspense novel would be able to do. Lately I've been browsing the suspense section of the local bookstores, a sec...more

If you are a new author today, it is hard to get a book published. Many new authors are using the self-publishing route of e-books. These talented authors are frustrated to see quasi-celebrities known for little more than sex scandals getting lucrative book deals. So what is a new author to do? Especially one who is facing both economic and family pressure to “Get a Real Job”? Manufacture their own sex scandal?

Chill Run is a fast paced thriller with a lot of turns in it.

Eddie Barrow, Jr is a writer who has never published a book. He's down, out and decides to come up with a plan that will get a publishing deal.

It involves scandal, appearing to be a maledom and getting caught with his pants down with a celebrity (literally).

It doesn't go so well and instead of appearing on TV because of his plan, he's on TV for murder and kidnapping.

I read this in one sitting, not able to put it down until I got to t...more

Good fast read! Murder, scandal, embezzling, mystery. Everything you'd want in a good thriller.

The dialog felt a little forced and the translations (added for the benefit of the reader) took a little away from the pacing but neither were so off putting that they ruined the story flow for me.

Kept thinking this book would make an excellent episode on CASTLE! =D

Russell Brooks is the author of Pandora's Succession, Unsavory Delicacies, and the mystery/thriller, Chill Run.

Russell has been compared to a young Robert Ludlum in the way that he wrote Pandora's Succession and Unsavory Delicacies.

After having read an excerpt of Chill Run, here's what one British reader had to say:

"If you like Elmore Leonard, you will love 'Chill Run'. Its snappy dialogue evokes...more
