The Star Child is a fantastic story YA urban fantasy that delves into the world of Celtic Myths and faeries,.
Kellen St. James hasn't had an easy life, but hasn't let the events control his life either. Right after graduation he leaves the US for Ireland, and things take flight from there when he finally meets, Calienta, the girl who's been a regular feature in his dreams while growing up.
Through Kellen, we get to know the reason she appeared in his life, join him as he finds his true purpose, h...more

The Star Child is a wonderful young adult urban fantasy. It features a seventeen-year-old genius, Kellan, who meets Calienta the girl of his dreams–literally. Kellan has been dreaming of Calienta most of his life.
Little does he know that she is really a star being and he has a destiny to fulfill.

Apart from the obvious (Harry Potter), it’s not that often you come across a male lead in a YA book (or is that just me??). From the offset you know Kellen is no ordinary 17-year-old; his above average intelligence, damaged family and strange encounters mark him out as different. The story is shrouded in mystery and Keyes very cleverly ensures the book is unputdownable by reeling in the reader within the first few opening pages.

Fantasy, quest, folklore and legend all rolled into one
I don’t read a great deal of fantasy so wasn’t sure what to expect when I started to read The Star Child by Stephanie Keyes. However, I was taken on a journey through the lands of Faerie with Kellen and Calienta. Kellen is a mortal but Calienta is immortal, with many powers. They embark on a quest which must be successful if good is to win, if they fail in their quest the world will be doomed to darkness forever. In the process they meet man...more

After being told his mother died when he was a small child, Kellen St. James finds himself being shipped off to boarding school. The only benefit was that he was near his grandfather Alistar, who truly cared about him. His father, Stephen, has always been emotionally distant and uninterested in Kellen's life, that is until he finds out that Kellen is childhood prodigy, then he makes arrangements for him to attend Yale at the age of 13. Kellen is now 17 years old and graduating from Yale. Of cour...more

I’ve been excited for this book for a very long time, ever since I set my eyes on it on goodreads and now I can share its review with you. I can clearly state it did not let me down. At 17 years old, Kellen graduates from The University of Yale, hoping that at least this act will bring him close to his estranged father who had abandoned him ever since his mother had died when he was young. However, this is not the case and instead of...more

This was a wonderfully written Young Adult Paranormal Romance. The world and characters are phenomenally crafted. This is definitely one book that the cover wholly illustrates the wondrous story inside the two covers. Kellen is a great character. The most treasured trait in him is his intelligence. He is a prodigy that just graduated from college at an age where he should be graduating from High School. He is lonely and pretty much abandoned by the remaining family he has. His self-absorbed fath...more
Hey guys! This is one of those books I am seriously excited about because I'd been a part of the cover reveal a few months back. I've been very excited for the Inkspell Publishing book tours - they have such amazing book covers, honestly! This one is obviously no exception, what with the title and synopsis, it sounded like an amazing read.

Kellen is the main character and portrayed as an extremely intelligent, young man who has plenty of promise in his future. He is very accomplished, but one mystery still remains in his life-who is Calienta and why is she contacting him? Calienta is a mystery through most of the novel, the reader gets glimpses of her through Kellen, but not much more than that. Kellen moves in with his grandmother after he graduates and slowly slips into Calienta's world from there. Her world is vastly different...more

The Star Child is the debut novel for American Author Stephanie Keyes.
The realisation that his Father doesn’t have time for you in his important schedule hits Kellen St James on the day of his graduation from Yale. Graduating at 17 years of age before most people would even get to University still doesn’t earn his Father’s pride.
Kellen decides there and then that he needs to carve out his own path in life if he is ever to find happiness. Most of his life following the sudden death of his dear Mo...more

When I first read the synopsis, my immediate thought was: Why would the world be about to be cloaked in darkness? My guess was Kellen could be our hero. But why would Kellen travel down into the underworld to try to save the mundane world? That’s just a bit bizarre, don’t you think? Anyway… you could tell I was really curious about what could be going on and my mind was racing with a bazillion questions when I began reading the story. :)

While The Star Child was a great read, the pacing of the story would not merit a "really liked it" for me.
Plot:
Keller has had a hard life. His mother died when he was young and his father is a mean-spirited, cold-hearted man that wants nothing to do with him. Keller has been plagued by the memory of an event from his childhood at his Grandmother's in Ireland. Imagine his surprise when the dreams and memories become a reality and some things that are thought to be fantasy turn out to be real.

Having previously taken part in the cover reveal for this book I was very excited to start reading!
The story was told from Kellen’s perspective, the male point of view is something I always find interesting in a book so that reeled me in straight away. I got the sense quite early on that there was something different/special about him, although I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was that made me feel that way, it was simply a feeling I got from him.

The book starts out on the ground running. There definitely isn't a dull moment from the time that you meet Kellen St. James to the very end. He goes through a lot of things could be very relatable to a reader with family problems and learning how to deal with the loss of a loved one. As he steps into what he thinks is going to be his new life, he finds out he very wrong and is actually destined to save the world. His journey allows him to find love, make peace with those lost loved ones, learn...more

I read the book and didn't know it was young adult until I came to review it.
I'm of mixed feelings about this book. Overall, I really liked the basic plotline. The characters, tweaks to the world, mythology and alternative universe were both interesting and fun. (I'd liked to have given it 4 stars).
Unfortunatly, the decrease in ratings came about because of the minor but significant errors and spot discontinuities in the writing after the middle of chapter 9. I think, that after that point, the...more

If you are a fan of magic and folklore you should definitely read this book!
I was really curious about the content and, after reading it, i was really glad that i have read this book.

'The Star Child' is a unique and interesting young adult fantasy that centers on the main character, Kellen, who discovers that everything he believed about his life was essentially a lie, and the one thing he thought was just a dream was actually true. His world is turned upside down when he finds out he plays an integral part in an ancient prophecy - and that he is part of a supernatural world he thought was only myth.

Kellen St. James is a genius, has a butthead brother and a father that’s a real piece of work. At least he has a grandmother and grandfather who love him. Unfortunately, neither can make it to his graduation from Yale at the age of 17. His grandfather was too ill to travel and his grandmother had died before his graduation. Of course, his father and brother didn’t make it either, but then Kellen didn’t expect them to. Jerks.

I would say 3.5 :)
I really loved how the author described the emotions that the characters were going through, esp Kellen's feelings towards his father, mother, gran and the situations he was facing. Good sense of humor that actually made me laugh :) I loved the entire new universe that the author created, from the unique character names to the elements and creatures and phenomenon in the mythical universe. A good light read!

A superb debut and introduction to this series. I thoroughly enjoyed the portals (how could I not!) and the colourful worlds and magical characters created by the author. Kellen's magical adventures with the beautiful Calienta move at a fast pace throughout, with surprises and new challenges threaded through every chapter. The strong Celtic influences are also a winner with me.
Imaginatively told; and I'm looking forward to being transported back to Kellen's worlds in the sequels.

The Star Child is fantastic adventure of a young man who has an old soul. I've enjoyed reading about Kellen and his "Star Child" Calienta! The fast paced action and the attachment to Kellen and the other characters leave me wanting more. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel. I have already pre-ordered my copy of the new release of "The Star Child" by Inkspell Publishing!
