A short tale full of fun-that's what this novella is like!
A few thoughts:
there was no meeting and instantly falling in love.
I loved that Cindy was the werewolf.
Yes, Cindy worried a tad too much about controlling her furry side but I liked that she behaved like any teenager would.
Remy too wasn't just a lovestruck teenager, he comes to realize his responsibilities as he grows up.

When Cydney Ella and Prince Remy meet in the woods when they are young, neither one wants to admit who they really are, so they call each other "Cinderella" and "Jack." They only have summers together on Ile de la Paix (Island of Peace), which is an island where supernaturals live openly. Just because it's called the Island of Peace, though, doesn't mean all of the groups get along ALL the time. When Cydney reaches puberty her werewolf side comes out, and in a moment of intimacy with Jack (she's 14 and he's 15 and they are sharing their first kiss), she accidentally bites him! Her mother takes her from the island back home to Florida, where they stay for good because she doesn't want Cydney to be arrested for biting a boy. What they don't know is that Jack is actually Prince Remy, who had a bad heart and wasn't too healthy to begin with! Lucky for Remy, his father, the King's, adviser is a centuries old vampire who turns him after he gets bit. Prince Remy never stops trying to find his Cinderella, without any luck. When he reaches 18, the King decides it would be best for political reasons that Remy marry, so he plans a ball where all of the eligible girls have to show and Remy has to choose a wife. Remy is not too happy with this, but goes along with it in the hopes that he will finally see Cindy again.

Meanwhile, Cydney's mother dies and she and her little brother have to go back to the island to live with their aunt. Cydney has never forgiven herself for losing control and biting Jack, and out and out refuses to go to the ball out of fear that she will get worked up and bite someone again. I was very curious to see how Veronica would work the whole "going to the ball-fairy godmother" aspect into the story, and I wasn't disappointed! It worked out great and was actually a lot of fun!

This was a really fun book with great characters and a great take on an old fairy tale. I can definitely recommend it to all fans of fairy tale retellings :)(less)

My thoughts:
This was a fun twist to the Cinderella story of old. Prince charming is a vampire. Cinderella is a werewolf. Of course there is a ball and that is where they will hook up - - - but the last time they saw each other she bit him! I enjoyed the read very much. Ms. Blade has done it again! A Bite's Tales is a unique twist on Cinderella meets paranormal meets Jane Austen. I am a sucker for young first love. This is a sweet story that captivated and entranced me from the get go. I polished this off in one sitting and have a hankering to read it again. In this plot, two young people meet on the island kingdom each summer every day near a secluded wood and spend their time as comfortable casual friends before they part when the girl goes home to Florida for the ten months of the rest of the year. Theirs is an idyllic friendship in which they share pretend names and speak little of their personal circumstances. It is the boy, Jack's idea. He hides the fact that he is really Prince Remy because he dearly wishes to be treated like everyone else just for this little while for who he is and not his title or family. Cydney really doesn't have any secrets from Jack, but she tells him to call her Cinderella just to play along with his wishes.

It is in the summer that Jack is fifteen and Cinderella is fourteen that he sees his friend as a beautiful girl who he as come to feel more than friendship for. He wants just one kiss with her before their summer ends and she must leave. Unfortunately, that is when the unthinkable happens. Cinderella is a werewolf and she thought she had more time before her change, but suddenly her first change comes on her and she injures Jack. She has to leave him there or she may hurt him worse. Her mother never took the family back to the island after that. For several years, she fears that she killed him, but it is also during this time that her mother is killed in an accident and she and her little brother are left orphans and come back to the island to live with their aunt and cousins.

Cydney never has gotten over the fear that she will do to someone else what she did to Jack and that now that she is back on the island that someone will discover that she is the werewolf that attacked a human. She lives timidly on the outskirts afraid of herself and thus afraid to actually live normally as a teen- school, hanging out with friends, dating. For Remy, he has never given up hope of finding his Cinderella, but due to the political climate his father is forcing him into marriage and he only has six-months to choose. Now that Remy is a vampire, agents are afoot to take him down because they don't want a vampire taking the throne when the current king is gone. Remy chafes under his father's dictates, but insists that he will cooperate just so long as he gets help searching for Cinderella so she can be at his ball. Only problem is- his Cinderella doesn't want to go to the ball, she doesn't care about the royals and she detests vampires.

So as you see, the plot was a fun mix and match with a kindly nod to the original while containing a fair amount of new material too. I enjoyed these characters a great deal from Cydney to Remy. I liked that Remy as Prince Charming had more face time than the original so we have a chance to get to know him as more than the handsome love struck Prince. Cydney's aunt, cousins and brothers were fun and a true family to her. No wicked people there! Remy's 'family' of the king and his top advisor, Dunston were a nice addition too. The main plot was well done with the dangerous assassination and takeover coup being a viable threat to drive the plot. I only had one issue and its probably just me. I got irritated with Cydney's continued and it seemed constant fear of becoming the big bad wolf. She only lapsed once. It was her first time and though she shifts every day since and nothing happens she stills stews about it. Her internal dialogue and the external dialogue with her family was mostly about that. I didn't mind and understood the point mentioned a few times, but I just got tired of how prevalent it became to the point where I was looking for some wicked step-mother or step-sister action just to break it up.

All in all, this was a refreshing take on the Cinderella tale that everyone from the early young adult years to us young at heart types can enjoy who don't mind a fairy tale blended with a contemporary paranormal romance. The book would fall into the fairly clean category with only mild language, no sex, and mild violence taking place.(less)

Great story! I loved how the author combined urban fantasy and a fairytale. I loved the characters and premise so much I'm disappointed there isn't more. I would love to know what happens next and the challenges they face and growth they make!

Veronica has done it again! She has created a tale that has everything in it from love to heart break to happiness. The story flows so smoothly I stayed up till 3:30am in the morning finishing the book. I needed to know what happened.

When I read the synopsis of the book I was eager to read it. I have always been a fan of the Cinderella story add a paranormal twist and what could go wrong? It wasn't a grip me by the edge of my seat/unable to put it down kind of book. However, the story was cute and innocent. I would give it a PG+ rating. The plus is because they briefly mention french kissing, but it's nothing too in depth that I wouldn't suggest a younger teen reading it.

This land of werewolves, vampires and witches is so great..so normal to read. I am so very glad that I read this one. There is no ugly step-sisters here..actually, I liked Cydney's sisters and one little brother in this book. This, without a doubt, is the most happy and likeable read for me in this month. The characters are not deep, but this is right for a short novel. There is humor, adventure, action, romance and the most important of all - 'happily ever after'. Its a satisfying read!

If you are into fairy-tales or fairy-tale retellings, then you should not wait another second to pick up this book. I am sure you would enjoy this as much as I do.(less)

As a reader who's not a big fan of the YA genre (except for a few titles) there was just something about this book that called to me. From its likable characters to its unique spin on the Cinderella story I was drawn into an intriguing world where paranormal creatures have an island/country where they can live in peace. With its nice combination of romance, political intrigue, and action I can see a long life full of stories based in this world.

From its likable characters to its unique spin on the Cinderella story I was drawn into an intriguing world where paranormal creatures have an island/country where they can live in peace. With its nice combination of romance, political intrigue, and action I can see a long life full of stories based in this world.

The love between a prince and a werewolf starts innocently enough with clandestine meetings every summer with neither sharing their real names. As time goes by and their teenage hormones kick in, one life altering kiss has consequences neither anticipated. Since that event, Cydney doesn't trust that she can control her shift and fears for the safety of those she loves which has led to her cutting herself off from living life to the fullest. I admired Cydney and found her reactions to the event to be realistic. Her actions and dialogue were believable for a teenager and her emotions swayed from putting up a tough facade to doubting everything about herself.

Remy too was likable and the connection between them was soul deep and sweet as sugar with a nice bit of heat as they've gotten older. The event that pulled them apart changed his life forever but he never forgot the red headed girl of his dreams. When they finally reunite at the Ball it's like no time has passed as they immediately fell back into their own private world. Remy's under a lot of pressure to learn how to be King but with Cydney those worries vanish. Their scenes together were sweet, romantic, and made my heart ache.

The secondary characters were memorable with each of them being reminiscent of those in the fable but much nicer. There's no wicked stepmother or stepsisters in this story. Along with an entertaining cast of characters is a nice bit of action to bring the story to its conclusion. A conclusion that's a little too easily wrapped up with a villain who's a bit too obvious.

This was a fast and pleasant read that appealed to me for many reasons. The world Ms. Blade created is an intriguing one ripe with even more possibilities. Knowing what this author is capable of makes me excited for her future works and gives me another good reason to read YA.(less)

She also populates her fairly tale world with warlocks, witches, vampires and very accommodating humans who take all these paranormal inhabitants in stride! As the story goes, Cydney meets and begins to fall in love with a boy named Jack (actually Remy the crown prince in disguise). But just as their relationship progresses from friendship to something more, Cydney hits puberty which for a wolf means shifting to wolf form with ofttimes deadly results. In this case, Cydney bites and almost kills Jack. A few years lapse and we find our heroine now motherless and coping as best as she can with her overwhelming fear that she will never be able to control her wolf. Losing control is not an option for her, so when everyone else is getting ready to be presented to the prince at the ball, Cydney stays home. And you know the rest of the fairytale...but now you must imagine a prince who has been turned into a vampire, wolves attempting an assassination and Cinderella morphing into a wolf during the ball...and you have a glimpse into the fun ride that A Bite's Tale promises to take you on.

While this is a short novella,, it packs a lot into it's slender form. The sweet romance between Cydney and Remy (or Jack as the prince in disguise is first called) is well done with just a bit of heat but PG enough for any YA audience.

Perhaps my only criticism lies in the editing. At times, it was difficult to decipher who was speaking--often dialogue came right on top of a short prose section and with out a he said, she said marker it took a moment to figure out who had spoken. And while I enjoyed the fairly constant POV changes from Remy to Cydney, the time gaps and lack of detail in the supporting characters left a bit to be desired. But these criticisms pale in contrast to the book's strengths which include a well thought out storyline, very likeable characters and a most interesting twist in the reworking of a classic fairytale.(less)

What a great read! I was completely unable to put this book down, definitely a page turner. I happen to love twists on fairy tales, and this twist on Cinderella is no exception. Veronica Blade has written an amazing novella!

The story is shown from both Remy and Cydney's POVs. The reader just can't help but feel bad for the two of them. they were great friends, completely in love, and then Cydney accidentally bites Remy and they are torn apart, Cydney not even knowing if her friend is still alive...more

Ok. Let me just start by saying I love the title! Telling people I am reading a "Furry Fable" was great to see the look on their faces.
I wonder if more of these Fables are to come?

Anyhow... to the story itself.
The introduction to the two main characters in the story was a good pace, I loved the illusions / link to classic stories that I felt were hinted at with their chosen pseudonyms.. "Cinderella" and "Jack" respectively. Even though her chosen name was very close to her real name, and was act...more Ok. Let me just start by saying I love the title! I wonder if more of these Fables are to come?

Anyhow... to the story itself.

"Cinderella" and "Jack" respectively. Even though her chosen name was very close to her real name, and was actually something her younger brother used to call her.

I'm not sure whether this is a one off book, or more are to come. During the story pieces of information were dropped in, which I thought - "aha" - sequel. Then apparently answered later on, such as where Cyd mentions what happened to her Dad, and why her mum moved away.

Overall, I found this story enjoyable. The ending though seemed a bit too quick to wrap up the story. They get attacked, she protects, they caught the bad guys and know who was leading the threat. I thought that this piece was a bit bland and not really part of the threat in the story - I figured with it being from the same type of creature as Cyd is that it would have been another obstacle or that they would have wanted her to be a spy or something for them.

Them "finding" each other was nice, and although I applaud the whole "no I'm not marrying we are too young" I felt that was quite insulting to this bond that they share, and left me feeling like "what on earth.. all that for "great be my girlfriend" ending.
I liked the way the relationship with Cyd and her Aunt ended at the end, but I would have liked to see more interaction where at the time you agree with Cyd, but then at the end have that "oh" moment and when you look back see how you were also mistaken.

To describe the flow of the story, I would say its a nicely paced story with only a bumps of action in the road that dont last long. It won't have you on the edge of your seat, you will find yourself pleasantly smiling whilst reading it. The characters were well written and likable which is always a good thing! I like the twist of the story combining a whole "Cinderella" story with lots more hair and much more modern.

Overall, I liked this story and will read it again and again no doubt. I will be reading more by the same author. If there was a sequel or short story featuring these characters - I'll be first in line to see what they are up to next!

Now kick in Veronica Blade's enormous story telling talent, several paranormal twists and, folks, you have one outstanding, unique and astounding read.

To be honest, I have loved everything that I have read by Ms. Blade and consider her to be one of today's great talents. She proves that she can bend and excel in a range of genres from YA to Contemporary Romance (with Blind Date, Checkmate) and her stories are quite flawless. YA and Paranormal are two of my absolute favorite genres and I am in heaven when these two are blended together.

Now, my thoughts on a furry Cinderella and a blood sucking Prince Charming? Love it! The entire time that I read the story, I felt as though I was right there with the characters, feeling their angst and insecurity. Cydney has always been incredibly fearful of her shape-shifting werewolf abilities, especially since that long ago day when she had her first "turning" experience and just happened to bite the love of her life. Though being young and new, she had no idea how to control the changing, she has lived in fear of harming another person.

Remy, a true Prince, has long ached to find his lost Cinderella. After that day when he was bitten, his love for her never faltered. When his father, the King, decides that it is time for Remy to get married, he decides the only thing to do is to hold a Royal Ball to find his son a wife. All the young ladies are required to attend the Ball, though Cydney has absolutely no intention of going. She also has no idea who the Prince really is (as kids, they called themselves Cinderella and Jack instead of their real names). Cydney is facing a bit of strong persuasion, however, and just may have to do the thing that she dreads the most.

A Bite's Tale is such an enjoyable, fun, addicting and absorbing tale that once I began reading, I didn't want to stop. Yes, in opposition, I didn't want the story to ever end, so I savored it like tiny bites of the juiciest and tenderest of steaks. All the while I was reading, I found myself loving the parallel story telling between the classic Cinderella story and A Bite's Tale. I also found myself smiling in many spots at the paranormal/modern twist. I loved both Remy and Cydney, as well as the secondary characters of Cydney's cousins and aunt. They were all so wonderful. Also the fact that this place, where they lived, joined together both humans and paranormal beings was very intriguing.

A Bite's Tale: A Furry Fable is a perfect story to indulge within for Young Adults and Adults as well. I give it my highest recommendation and truly cannot wait to read more by this amazing and talented author, Veronica Blade!(less)

Aww, such a cute story! I love the traditional Cinderella story with the modern twist of vampires and werewolves (and other magical/mythical creatures). Wonderful new take on a known fairytale. You should DEFINITELY read this.

This book was cute and really good. I loved the different point of views. Also how the author wrote how Cydney first turned into a werewolf. I love that the supernaturals lived amaong humans. Also that the book toook place in the present. Even though there were royals and stuff it was cool.

There was a lot more depth to this book than I expected. The family dynamics for both the main characters plays heavily into the story line and I really like how the original story was twisted to modernize it and make it more appealing to a modern reader. It works and it works really well.

Cydney, i.e. Cinderella, has been spending summers at her aunts house for years. When she was 12, she met Remy, i.e. Jack, in the woods. They never knew each other's real names and continued to meet in secret for three consecutive summers. The final summer when they met, Cydney was coming into her werewolf adolescence. When Jack gave her a kiss, she lost control and accidentally bit him, which is a crime. Cydney's mom fled with her and they never returned to the island. In the book, it's three years later and Cydney's mom has died, so she's had to move in with her aunt. She has no idea what happened to Jack after the bite, or if he even survived it. As a result, Cydney lives in constant fear of accidentally attacking someone else.

The love story in this book is fabulous. I love the paranormal twists and the way that this island is a paranormal enclave. I really loved the Cinderella/Jack love story when they were using those aliases to meet in the woods and were younger. But when the story moves to Cydney/Remy as older teenagers, it is even more gorgeous because neither one has forgotten or moved on from their connection.

The other thing that I really loved about this story was the way that the author wrote the family dynamic. Cydney's aunt and cousins are so awesome. I love the way they accept Cydney and her younger brother right into their world, even though Cydney's werewolf side does intimidate them to a certain extent. There are some of the sweetest moments provided by Cydney's 13 yo brother. He's sarcastic and snarky and has some great lines in this book. I liked the difference in this story vs. the original. Cydney is not an outcast because her family doesn't love her. They do...a lot. She's an outcast of her own making because she is so traumatized by what she did to Jack all those years ago. She doesn't trust herself to control her werewolf.

Remy's family dynamic/issues are equally good and creative, but I am not going to tell you what they are because they come out more towards the middle of the book and I don't want to give any spoilers. Just know that everything about this book is REALLY well done and well written.

This is really truly a fabulous adaptation of the original fairy tale. It's extremely creative. It takes the original fairy tale story concept and reinterprets it into a new tale that is interesting, sweet, and completely entertaining, from page one...all the way to the very end of the book. It's not a super-long book, but it's just perfect to read in a single sitting, which is good because once you start, you don't want to put it down. Just a fabulous book!

Wow - just WOW! Veronica Blade knows how to tell a story! This is the second story I've read by this author, and I've walked away from both of them just amazed that she completely had me so wrapped up in her tale that I forgot to breathe sometimes! I found myself holding my breath in anticipation. That's saying something, since I haven't done that over a fairy tale since I was a child, and I'm a 47 year old woman *blush*.

A great remake of Cinderella. I couldn't stop reading once I started, so thankfully it wasn't too long or I'm sure I would have zero sleep. I have been itching for a supernatural retelling of this particular fairy tale (well, this and Romeo and Juliet, but I haven't any doubt that will be next). I loved the action and the romance! This novella really is best described as a "furry fable." It was a lovely, fast read. It was so innocent and vivid, yet packed full of paranormal teenage angst. Very quickly, it sweeps you away into this charming urban fantasy.

This was a fun and cute retelling of the classic fairy tale. The paranormal twist gave this well known story a fun new premise and life. Unbeknownst to Cydney, he was changed into a vampire to save his life. All is well, but of course as a prince he has a huge responsibility to his country and he must choose a wife to help him rule. The king schedules a ball for the prince to choose a fitting lady, but he can't forget his "Cinderella". Will fate allow these two to cross paths once again? Will they have to put their species first since vampires and werewolves are enemies?

Veronica Blade's novella is an extremely satisfying read. I was genuinely surprised. Even better, if you're an Amazon Prime member the book is free to borrow. That made the read just that much sweeter for me. Though I must admit I try to imagine the prince with a different hair style in my mind because the one on the cover is a total buzz kill.

I liked having an old tale to compare this to. It made me appreciate the subtle changes. While I never doubted Cinderella's love for her prince in the cartoon, sometimes for this one I merely wondered if it was due to teenage hormones. Also, sometimes it felt more like Romeo & Juliet than Cinderella. This had a lot of coming-of-age elements. There is a little action but not a whole lot. That was fine with me because I didn't pick the book up for that reason.

This is a fun, quick read and a nice change of pace from the norm. I would like to see a full fleshed out novel with these characters because there's room for the story to expand.

This was a great supernatural story with a fairy tale twist. I actually wanted to read more. The story is about a summer love that goes beyond summer. It’s about a prince falling in love with a not so ordinary girl. Like most fairy tales there’s a ball, only this one includes vampires, werewolves, and warlocks. Cydney and Remy’s story has so many possibilities. I would love to read more about them. I loved the way the book was written and look forward to reading more of Veronica Blade’s work. I...more
