The island of San Dominica, a popular Caribbean tourist destination, is thrown into chaos when a series of brutal slaying on the beaches start to take place. Each victim is brutally murdered and slashed by machetes.

A mafia family with the hopes of adding some excitement to the island have hired Damian and Carrie Rose to commit the murders. Each is designed to look like the work of local rebels hoping to overthrow to government. The use of the machetes is supposed to help that image.

Patterson wrote this book back in 1977, making it one of his earliest works; he got better. It is typical Patterson, except that its hero is almost too low-keyed to be a hero. The novel reads much like a journalistic account of the plot developed by the baddies, Damian and Carrie Rose, who are lovers and also psychopathic murderers for hire. Their employers in this case are a strange combination of Mafia bosses and CIA-type federal agents, who agree to finance their plot to create a revolt on a...more

John McDonald and his girl friend are on vacation to get away from it all. His girl friend is there for the sun and the sand. John is is there to try and forget about the experiences he had before he got out of the military. All is going well until one day John decides to go for a run on the beach.

There had been reports that a revolutionary named Dredd had been committing horrible attacks on tourists in the area in order to make all foreigners...more

Simply dreadful. I read a bunch of reviews on this book and none of them were very good, so I can't say I wasn't warned. But like so many others, I am a completist, and I can't read all of Patterson's books without reading the bad ones as well. I don't know exactly why this book was so bad; it was just boring. There were times when I had read 20 pages and could not remember a single word, but I had planned out my entire evening. The character development was almost non-existent. About 150 pages...more

This was the second book ever written by James Patterson and as i had said in my last review for his first novel "The Thomas Berryman Number" I am not a particular fan of his earlier work, but also went on to say that his work does get better, this i know! "Season Of The Machete" follows that pattern exactly, a little bit better however not great. Although overall understanding the plot i had times where i was confused as to which way this novel was going? We have two hired assassins, The Roses,...more

An interesting book. Not great, but not terrible either; a good middle ground. It was one of Patterson's earlier works and if you are familiar with his later works then you can tell. The story jumps around a great deal and some parts of the story are never fully explained. I do not want to give away any spoilers, so I will just say the main plot has some holes that Patterson did not even bother spackling over. On the otherside, the characters were pretty great and very interesting. I felt the ma...more

This is my first James Patterson book, I can't say I was impressed with it however. It was not horribly bad, I did give it a 4 star rating after all and that is only because of the last hundred pages or so. Towards the end of the book the excitement picked up a whole lot and that's the only reason it has a 4 star rating. All the way through the book I was thinking that this is going to be a 3 star book but I like I said the ending changed that. I have heard great things about Patterson, I've hea...more

When you want to instill terror in the hearts and minds of both the citizenry and tourists of the small Caribbean island of San Dominica, you use Damian and Carrie Rose. With the help of two other mercenaries, these two contract killers methodically stalk their targets and then slaughter them with a combination sniper/machete attack. What's worse is that no one has any idea what the Rose's look like, even the people that hired them, because they never leave witnesses. That is until Peter Macdona...more

It is hard to believe that a crime/thriller writter like Patterson turned out this book. A choppy writing style, back and forth snippits, and predictable plot twists made this a book that was almost painful to get through. The last third did pick up a bit, which helped (at least enough for me to plow through and finish). I did like the ending, but despite being left open for a potential sequel, it looks like Mr. Patterson (thankfully) has not opted to write. With the proper writer and director,...more

Non-series - "Damian and Carrie Rose think they have planned the perfect murderous spree. They continue to think that until Peter Macdonald becomes the only living witness to a machete murder. The most horrific murders plague the Caribbean Island. Dotting the beautiful landscape are the butchered victims with the trademark machete driven through their bodies. Peter seems to be the only person who can stop Damian and Carrie, but will it be in time?"

This was a good James Patterson book. However, there is a about 5 pages before the prologue in this book. Most of the chapters are dated in this book to keep a timeline going. This section is also dated, but a year after the rest of the book. What happens in this first part contradicts things that happen later in the book. And since I obviously read that part first, it confused me later. I am hoping it was a typo on the date.

Assasinations are happening on the island. Victims are killed by a sniper bullet then hacked to pieces with machetes. It's all a sinister plot by the Mafia to overthrow the current government so that they can put casinos in place with the new government. It's planned to look like a racial uprising, but when a blond Englishman is spotted with a sniper rifle, the witness is now being hunted. Way too violent for me.

Sorry, James and Patterson fans but this story was awful. Long and tedious, gruesome crimes that I doubt could progress and continue for so long.

I listened to it on MP3 and the narration by Lou Diamond Phillips was excellent--no problem there. He was great with character accents and personalities and his regular voice is quite pleasant to hear.

I guess this is an oldie but goodie but not for me.

Finished reading James Patterson - Season Of The Machete. Soon a series of murders are linked and catches the attention of Peter. They work as a pair and are rather famous and they are up for hire. Along his investigations, he catches up to them and learns a horrible truth wif a great twist at the end of uncovering the truth!! Was so so to me. Not one of James Patterson's best... :)

This is not a very good book. The story is clunky and the characters are very forgettable. The ebook version of this book has at least a hundred spelling errors on words such as that, who, and out. It is very distracting when you have to re-read the sentence to figure out what was meant. If making your way through Patterson books, be sure to skip this one.

Hated this book. It was the first James Patterson book that I ever read and it took many years before I read another one. One of my friends had to bug me to death to convince me to try him again. I felt much better recently when I read an interview with James and he said that he hated this book too.

This book is just so disjointed and poorly written, it is very difficult to follow what's going on, let alone be interested in it at all. I bailed after just 25 pages. The only cool aspect of this book is that it has a nice character with a cool name, but once he is killed off by page 25, that's when I figured it was a sign that would be a good place to stop reading.

Readers familiar with his post Along the Spider novels won't even believe this is written by the same James Patterson. It's obviou...more

My first James Paterson book. It was OK but it was by no means a book I couldn't put down and walk away from. The story just wasn't that gripping.

I have one more of his books and I'm willing to give him another try. Got these 2 books from a charity book sale at the local hospital.

I am normally a fan of James Patterson, but I just could not get into this one. I didn't not connect with the main characters and I almost felt like I had to think about what was going on. I did read it on a plane so maybe that had something to do with it?
Macjest
I couldn't believe how awful this was. The best I can say for it is that I managed to finish it. There were several times I wanted to pitch it across the room. The dialogue was horrible and the sentence structure was choppy. It's hard to believe that his writing gets better.

This was definitely not one of my favorite Patterson novels. I listened to the book on CD during a road trip...and it was just ok... i didn't get my normal feeling of "maybe I should drive just a little longer so I can hear what happens next!"
Samantha
I am a big James Patterson fan so I thought I'd start at the beginning of his career and I gotta say he improved immensely over the years. This was definitely not one of his best. it was kind of boring and took me a long time to read.
Mick
I prefer the Alex Cross series. People getting whacked and hacked with a machete while their on a gorgeous island vacation...no, no, no. In this suspenseful thriller, I like Patterson's writtng style more than what he has written.
Jeff
I could've skipped the first 250 pages of the book and started from there. Great detail was spent in characters that didn't need the depth in. I finished the book because I like the author and his other books. The story jumped around a lot and didn't flow very well.
Kim
Ugh. Boring and very hard to follow on audio. Was not invested in any of the characters, totally formulaic, and the only reason I listened to the last disc was because I had already made it through four.

can tell this is an early book for JP. Good but not his best. Grisly at times, but the title suggests that right off the bat. did not end as i expected. I wanted to like the hero more, I wanted the hero to have a better storyline and ending, but over all an ok read.
Amy
This was one of the first JP books I read. I honestly don't remember WHY I didn't like it, but I didn't. Hmm, don't want to read it again to find out either.
