Oh, Heather Graham...what have they done to you? Did you sit in a meeting, after the success of the first book, in this series, and listen to some asshole in a suit tell you how to make your series more marketable? Did he say, more ghosts--ghosts are in right now? Did he say, more romance--romance is big? Did he say, let's dumb it down a bit--people are stupid?

If he did say those things, you seem to have taken them to heart because this book is an insult to the one that preceded it. I gave that

Ok, I have now read two books in this series in hopes that Heather can pull it out of the world of Lost Plots. But, no. Ashley is such a TSTL heroine that I kept kinda wishing the villain would just shoot her. At the beginning of the book she rushes into the old graveyard in her night gown to investigate what she thinks may be some teenage vandals. Yep, that stupid.
Then there is Jake whose personality has completely changed since the first book. Now he's in charge? He and Jackson seem to have

Heart of Evil is the second book in the Krewe of Hunters series and it is quite different to the first one. Heart of Evil contains the same characters but this time it focuses on Jake. While, I think that you don’t have to read the first one in order to understand this one I would definitely recommend reading the first book, Phantom Evil before this one; especially if you want to know more about the characters backgrounds and things like that.
Heart of Evil is so good. It is a murder mystery, wit

To be frank, I felt the ghosts in the story had more of a love connection than Jake and Angela did. Really Angela blows Jake off 5 years ago because she can't deal with what he told her about her dad. Now that she is having some dead people issues, she wants him back in her life. Then once he is there she keeps blowing hot and cold with him. Then after they have been in the muddy Mississippi looking for a weapon and Jake is trying to catch a shower. Then you knock on the door still covered in st ...more

This was definitely an interesting read. It's a cross between paranormal and actual crime scene investigation. It was almost like watching one of those episodes where people truly enter a place and try to use scientific data to interpret whether or not they encountered a presence. Usually in paranormal romances, it's the exact same information that you get in all the others, and right now there is a plethora of them to choose from.

Different angles, different ideas, or just a different spin is a

This was fairly entertaining, but not nearly as good as the first book in this series. This one also took place in Louisiana, but on a Civil War-era plantation. The story also focused on a different member of the Krewe of Hunters--Jake Mallory. The romance between him and his old flame Ashley Donegal makes up a significant part of this book--much to my disappointment, as I found their whole romantic conflict very unbelievable. Compared to book one, I liked the story better in this book, but I liked the characters better in the first one. The characters here came across as rather flat.

I also had an issue (one of those must suspend disbelief kinds of things) with the fact that Jake, who previously was pretty much just a musician that also apparently helped to find people (unless I’m mistaken on that aspect), now is a full fledged FBI agent that knows all about protocols, procedure and apparently the knowledge to give a

The opening scene / prologue, where the two main characters have nightmares, was a real eye-opener and gave way to how the rest of the book would go. Jake and Ashley’s (main characters) introduction into the story couldn’t have been more perfect.

As the first chapter progressed, it was rather humorous and made me giggle. Then things began to get spooky in a good way considering it‘s a paranormal mystery. I enjoyed reading the parts from the murderer’s point of view. It made the tale more captivat

The Evil series continues with Heart of Evil. Heather Graham does a great job of continuing the characters from the first book to this book, while subtely shifting the focus from the main characters of the first book to the 'new' main characters of the second, yet not losing focus on any of the 'Krewe'.
Jake is a likeable character that seems to be content with his life, but you soon find out he lost his soul mate years before when his 'abilities' scared her off...now she needs his help. Returnin

Outside of New Orleans, Donegal Plantation is known for its unsurpassed dining, captivating atmosphere, haunting legends and now a corpse swinging from the marble angel that marks the Donegal vault. The corpse is discovered in nearly the same position as that of Marshall Donegal, the patriarch killed in a skirmish just before the Civil War.
Desperate for help traditional criminologists could never provide, plantation heiress Ashley Donegal turns to an elite team of paranormal investigators who bl

A certain delicacy is needed when you set a murder mystery on a Southern plantation that also does civil war re-enactments. Especially when the murder is linked to civil war history.

The first chunk of the book explains how slavery is a non issue' and in fact there is no racism any more (this is confirmed by a black character being totally cool with re-enacting the guy who owned his family & raped his great grand mother). Another character explains that her Slave owning ancestors didn't make

Ugh. Horrible. Don't even know why I finished it. Probably because I was listening to it while doing fun stuff. Would not recommend. Very boring. I really didn't care what happened half way through the book.

This book was just OK for me. It was a good story and it flowed fine but it wasn't something that I would read again or necessarily recommend. If you are a Heather Graham fan you will like it.

My only complaint is that the romance story part of this book got a bit excessive at times. The relationship/history of Jake and Ashley did not need to be retold as many times as it seemed it got told. But, the plot and story progressed well. There were no surprise wonder clues suddenly exposed at the end to explain why it ended the way it did - I always like that. The ending flowed into the overall plot. And, as I always like, it ended with everyone getting what they should.

Review provided by Black Lagoon Reviews:

Heart of Evil is the second novel in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham. As far as follow up novels, however, this definitely didn't live up to it's predecessor, but still it proved to be a good stand alone read that had a great mystery and an somewhat intriguing romance. Wonderfully written and with some nice twists and turns this is another nice addition to Graham's thriving repertoire.

Like the first novel, Graham's world building is

I hesitate to file this book under suspense or thriller because it just didn't seem that way. My updates pretty much tell it all about what I thought of this book:

1) It started off extremely slow with too much world building and story set up. This is book number two in the series and we shouldn't still be on world building at this point. Normally I don't mind a little bit of world building depending on how much I need to understand of the world. But this is a contemporary setting with paranormal

This the second installment of Krewe of Hunters in the plantation country outside of New Orelans. Heart of Evil is the second book in the Krewe of Hunters series (trilogy?) but this one focuses on Jake. The "Krewe" consists of the same characters so we get to know each of them a little more but the main focus is on Jake and Ashley.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....I love Heather Graham! I think there has only been one book of hers that fell flat for me. I enjoyed Heart of Evil immensely! It has the perfect blend of ghost story, romance and history. And best of all (in my opinion),

I liked this book a lot better then Phantom Evil, which is the first book in the Krewe of Hunters series. I have a review here on GoodReads if you'd like to read it, and I have one on my Horror Movie/Book Review blog. To be honest, I waited quite some time before reading this one because I disliked the first book so much (because I thought it was going to purely be a ghost book, not a cop/who did it sort of book) But in the end I'm glad I pushed on and read this one.

This takes place on a planta

This story of history, ghosts, and love reunited drew me in quickly and kept my attention throughout. There is nothing like a serial killer doing a vengeful ghost’s bidding to bring back together two people who were separated because of their opposing views on the existence of such paranormal entities. How is that for an original plotline?
The characters were strong, each with their own unique personalities, including the unnamed killer. I really like it when you get brief glimpses into the kill
