First off I have to say I love the new cover for Exceeding Expectations far better than the first cover, this one is much more suited for such a beautiful book, the old saying is never judge a book by its cover and that's is very true but the old cover just didn't do this lovely book justice, so 5 stars for the new cover. This is the first novel of Lisa's that I have had the pleasure of reading and more to come as I now have her on my favorite author list, Lisa has also written Dangerous Lies which I have on my wish list. I was taken in right away with Exceeding Expectations, and you know that is exactally what this book does when you read it, it exceeds your expectations I was absolutely trapped by this book. It captured me in a way I didn't think it would and held me right to the very last page.

Most books that flip back and forth from one place and time sometimes you can get lost and have to go back feeling we have missed something, I am happy to say, not once did I have to back track to make sure I was still on the same wave as the book, and held your deep interest in the book at the same time. Now with all the fantastic characters Lisa has created, how am I supposed to pick my favorite, well I can't it was a collective group and they all work so well together to create a story that is well told, well plotted out and executed perfectly, Alan aka-Jack Morgan, Amelia and Charlotte(Charlie), Petal, Raul oh goodness what a cast. I'm trying really hard to do this review without revealing anything important so forgive me if I'm being vague today, but I just can't spoil such an amazing book you'd kill me lol. Lisa's writing is so classy it flows with just the right amount of romance, mystery, suspense, and the twists and turns with a surprise at the end that will have you sitting with your mouth hanging open when your done! It's quite the surprise, squeeel, I can't wait for you all to read this book, you must get a copy and read so worth it!!! She also discovers that PB society may not always get it right about love and class, when she meets and gets help from the brilliant young lawyer, Andy Garcia clone, Raul. Armed with Raul's encouragement, her own pride and tenacity, Charlie uses her only skill; modelling, to help finance herself and her sister while she travels from Palm Beach to NYC, across the US and to Paris in search of some answers.

I appreciate Lisa Smith as a seasoned author with astute writing skills after having read and reviewed her "Dangerous Lies" last year. She has a brilliance for conveying characters, and the intellectual capacity to place them in historical settings that sparkle with glamorous detail.

In fact, it's the authentic details of the time-periods that make it fun to read Lisa's book as it skips from Charlie's current days of the late 1950's and early '60's to the past Palm Beach and Manhattan, with hints of Sister Parish's posh interior designs, famous museums and artists, the fashions of different eras, vintage cars and high society parties. Her historical and fictitious characters work in sync as they are perfectly set in these time frames, and midst the transitory madness of WWs I and II Paris.

Lisa Smith's writing isn't over-blown with emotion and sappy romance; rather, it is sophisticated and subtle. It's witty, fun and sassy. There's love of family; and, there are affairs of the heart, pain and anxieties that accompany romantic relationships in difficult times, intrigue and madness. I loved this kettle of mystery and suspense that dominates her characters.

I'm a fan of Ms Smith's. I love a good story with interesting characters, a mystery and a romance that's not over-the-top but that rests securely in reality. I like foreign intrigue and the sophistication of art and society. Most of all, I so appreciate an intelligent author of worldly experience! If you do, too, you'll love "Exceeding Expectations." This book has a sequel which I'm dying to read!

Exceeding Expectations is a fascinating story with a clever mixture of suspense, intrigue and romance. The storyline is well written, the author transports the reader between alternating decades as she weaves a story about Charlotte's father, Jack Morgan aka Alan Fitzpatrick in the 1930-1940s WWII Paris, with that of the 1950-1960s Palm Beach when Charlie searches for the truth about her father. The attention to detail for those time periods are first rate, the authenticity provides the reader with a fascinating look back at what our world was like in those time periods. The story is told in a first person narrative by Charlie during the current time period of 1962, while the 1930-1940s decades surrounding Jack/Alan's story is told in a third person narrative. The characters are realistic and have complex personalities, their engaging interactions with each other lend more depth to the story. I loved how Charlie's journey transformed her from being a spoiled debutante to a confident and independent woman. I enjoyed reading how the budding relationship between Charlie and Raul developed, it was fun and flirty. I was also fascinated with Jack's story, as a history buff, the authentic details of the WWII and early JFK time periods made the story more powerful and compelling. The story provides plenty of intriguing twists and turns that will keep the reader in suspense, while the subtle romantic scenes are fun and sassy. I love the author's style of writing, she provides the reader with a story that has style and sophistication.

I would recommend Exceeding Expectations to anyone who would like to read an intriguing romantic suspense story that has all the elements that would certainly exceed their expectations!

I feel I should say before I get into my review that this is not my normal genre of book. . So I started reading this book feeling a little pensive of whether I would like the book, never mind enjoy it! The book starts out with Jack's "death", although we aren't told exactly why he is on the run. Charlotte is desperate to find work and a way to support herself and her sister. She is also desperate to learn why her father felt he needed to kill himself in order to protect the family. Charlotte is a mostly likable character: smart, funny and a little of a disaster when it comes to her feelings. Although she has a few flaws, and who doesn't, I think they were mostly attributed to the time period in which she lived, the 1960's. Times were much different then, and things like racism and sexism were still a common thing.

Not having anyone else to turn to, Charlotte reluctantly accepts the help of a young attorney, Raul, in finding out about her father's past. Of course, a little romance starts to blossom between the two. But Raul is from Cuba and it is highly unacceptable for Charlotte to date, never mind marry, Raul. Naturally, their romance is a rather rocky one and this results in some serious page turning.

Aside from Charlotte's life, we also learn about Jack's. His is one full of secrets and to put it lightly, quite a few woman. He is quite the ladies man, and even though you would think this would make him less of a likable character, it actually didn't. His story was perhaps my favorite of the book. I couldn't wait for more of his past to come up so I could learn more. He loved his children dearly and made many unfortunate sacrifices for them, including walking away from them forever to keep them safe.

The only issue I had while reading this story was all the sexual encounters. While I don't mind a little sex in books, I prefer the quick "then they had sex" way of telling you what happened. Exceeding Expectations is a little more graphic and you are well aware of who is doing what. However, this is just my personal taste and shouldn't deter you from giving this a read, especially if you don't mind juicier details. I just thought I would give you a heads up.

Overall, this was a sensational read. The author keeps this story going at a perfect pace, giving us just enough of one story before switching to the other. There is a little bit of everything you could possible want in this story: mystery, romance, intrigue and a whole lot more. This kept me flying through the pages and desperate to pick up each story where it left of. I'm looking forward to picking up the sequel and reading it as soon as possible. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who loves a good read!

As you know from most of my reviews characters are first and foremost to me, and Exceeding Expectations has some wonderful characters. While the story starts off with Jack Morgan and he appears through the book, the real main character is Charlie, Jack's youngest daughter. I did not think I would like her at first. When you first meet her she seems spoiled and pretty useless. However, her growth in this story is amazing and makes the story astounding. Raul also offers great interest in the story. I liked him, he is nice and a great romantic interest. He seems to know just how to treat Charlie to get her to grow and change. He's not wishy-washy, and he acts like a real man without talking down to her or treating her bad. I really found him to be a very attractive man and perfect for Charlie in the book.

As for the plot, I love how Ms. Smith goes back and forth between the past and present in the story. The present is relative in the story since the present is in the 1950s. I love the setting and how the history factors into the story and the motivations of the characters. The plot moves along with the character growth, the suspense of Charlie trying to figure out what happened to motivate her father to commit suicide and the things she learns along the way. The romance also pushes the story along. It all adds up to make a book that really draws you in.

I felt as though I was right there with the characters in this book. I was fully invested in Charlie's life and trying to find out what had happened to Jack. The book has it all, suspense, romance, characters that truly care about others and characters that are truly evil. Ms. Smith has crafted an amazing book and I can't wait until the sequel to this one. Though I would like to note that this one ties up nicely with a few loose ends, but nothing that will leave you fussing at the author for leaving you hanging. Just some things left open that will make for an interesting next book. If you enjoy character growth novels set in the past with some suspense, then Exceeding Expectations is for you. But make sure you set aside some time, because you won't want to put this one down.(less)

Exceeding Expectations is part love story, part historical fiction and a whole lot of mystery that will keep you guessing on every page. Who was Jack Morgan and why did he kill himself? This is the question that his daughter Charlie desperately needs to answer, and she will go to any length necessary to put the pieces of this puzzle together. Charlie discovers much more about her father and his sordid past than she ever expected and the journey she takes has the power to alter the course of her own life.

Plot-wise there was a lot going on in this novel. There was the story of Charlie and her growth from sheltered and spoiled socialite to independent and confidant woman, as well as her sister Amelia and her crippling response to her father’s suicide. There was the mystery surrounding her father Jack Morgan and his death, then the seemingly disconnected story of Jeremy Randal and his servant Disraeli (which by the end of the novel makes perfect sense). These individual elements were complicated and added to the suspense of the story, but they also left me feeling rather disconnected from the characters. Just as I was becoming immersed in a character and their unfolding story the novel shifted focus. It was a little frustrating as I was never quite ready to move on from a particular story, character or time period and the abrupt change in focus kept me from really caring about or becoming invested in the characters and their stories.

What I enjoyed most about Exceeding Expectations was the way the author chose to tell Jack Morgan’s story. I love when an author can successfully move from present to past smoothly and Smith did this beautifully. As a fan of historical fiction I found the flashbacks to Jack’s life in Paris and how the Nazi occupation affected not only himself but every member of his Parisian family to be particularly interesting. The flashbacks to Jack’s former life were well written and each one served to reveal another piece of the very complicated puzzle that resulted in his apparent suicide.

Exceeding Expectations is an intriguing historical based mystery that will definitely play on your emotions. Once I got into the novel I couldn’t put it down, and may have stayed up until 1:30 am finishing it even though I had to wake up early in the morning! This book didn’t exactly blow me away, but it was an enjoyable read that I would definitely recommend to fans of WWII era historical fiction, and family dramas.

I read and loved Lisa Smith's first novel, Dangerous Lies. Frankly, I was wondering if she would be able to maintain the level of writing in future books. When your first book is a 5 star read, it is hard to go up. Ms. Smith easily handled it. I was engrossed from the beginning of Exceeding Expectations. Ms Smith writes well thought out stories. Raul is a strong, intelligent and fascinating character and the relationship that is forged between these two characters is a delight to see unfold. All the characters woven into this story are well defined and contribute a great deal to its drama and intensity.

It is apparent that a great deal of research went into the writing of this book which I thoroughly appreciate as it serves to enrich and bring to life the background of the story. The author has a great sense of sophistication to her writing which I find fascinating as it kept me totally involved in the story; the truth is I had a hard time putting this book down!!

I highly recommend Exceeding Expectations to anyone who enjoys an intelligently written and captivating romantic/suspense story, this is a real page-turner.

This was the first book I've read by this author, Lisa April Smith. But I have to say, it was a fun and bumpy ride. I struggled to put the book down once I started reading it. Therefore, not much work got done at my house the last two days.
