It’s been awhile since I read the last book, Dark Frost, and even longer still since I read the first two at the frenetic insistence of a super fan (you know who you are), but, for a couple of reasons, I’ve always thought of the Mythos Academy series as dumb fun, not great but not unenjoyable either. Crimson Frost though, I think this series has finally found its stride - this is the first book that hasn’t gotten just a lukewarm reaction from me, because, let’s face it, the best book in the seri...more It’s been awhile since I read the last book, Dark Frost, and even longer still since I read the first two at the frenetic insistence of a super fan (you know who you are), but, for a couple of reasons, I’ve always thought of the Mythos Academy series as dumb fun, not great but not unenjoyable either. Crimson Frost though, I think this series has finally found its stride - this is the first book that hasn’t gotten just a lukewarm reaction from me, because, let’s face it, the best book in the series so far deserves way more than just that.

Why? Because now with Loki on the loose and the fate of the world at stake, Jennifer Estep has really upped the ante - and it shows. The first book was really just a murder mystery, granted a murder mystery at a super special boarding school, but still a murder mystery, and the following books, while building up new stories on top of that, really didn’t start off by immediately putting Gwen in a tough situation like she gets into within the first chapter of Crimson Frost. This is a book that really forces Gwen to be on her toes the entire time - from the second she’s arrested and accused of helping Loki, she has to focus on proving her innocence and then stopping Loki, and I really appreciate that focus not only because it gives her way less time to neurose over the social ins and outs of Mythos Academy, the kind of stuff that dragged in the other books, but also because it really helped improve the overall flow of the story with far fewer interruptions. (Don’t worry, she still has plenty of scenes with Logan though, although he still apparently wears blue, weirdly enough.)

I’ve said before one of the unique things about this series is the supporting characters, particularly Daphne, because Gwen and Daphne are such different characters it’s really cool to see two friends like that. Sure, there’s a huge focus on Gwen because of the nature of the plot so there’s not as much focus on Daphne and Gwen’s other friends as I'd like, but even though I’m not sure how believable it is that almost the entire student body turns on Gwen the moment she’s accused of being a Reaper (sure, she hasn’t been popular to begin with, but that is some major hate) or that an accused Reaper would be allowed to wander around the campus like Gwen is, Daphne and Gwen’s other friends show up more than enough that their response to the accusations only makes the whole group seem even more awesome. And not just Daphne or Oliver or Carson or Vic who’s still the coolest weapon around, but even longtime characters like Morgan McDougall, Estep sure has a way of surprising me through even the most seemingly minor characters, she really stepped it up from the earlier books.

I wasn’t surprised by the overall plot - with Vivian Holler, Loki’s Champion still out there and up to no good, it’s easy to guess who’s behind Gwen’s troubles, but Estep adds enough twists and turns that’s it’s not immediately obvious what Vivian’s and Loki’s game is exactly, so part of Gwen being on her toes is actually showing off her street smarts by figuring out their exact scheme. It goes without saying Gwen’s not the same kind of clueless investigator she’s been in the past, she’s able to connect the dots as well as anybody given what she knows, and then pass it to a group she trusts, so even though it feels like things are only getting started, it also feels like everything’s really coming together, especially the ending. (Oh, and unlike the previous books, remember not to skip the bonus materials at the end, let's just say there's a very important letter in there.)

That doesn’t mean my criticisms of Dark Frost have all gone away though; something about Gwen’s tendency for long internal monologues with the same descriptions, rehashy explanations of old plots, and shallow and pretty generic explanations of the mythology for the fourth book in a row still bothers me and gives me the impression that the books are kind of ‘dumbed down’ with the story being told (by Gwen) instead of really being shown. But I think I can finally see why the Mythos Academy books have been so well received in certain quarters, I might criticize but I have to admit Jennifer Estep’s writing is also what makes these books so accessible. Maybe I’m just now getting used to it, but I think I’m finally appreciating that these are the elements that make these books one of the easiest paranormal fantasy series to dive into (or dive into again, in my case), everything’s explained right there. And for once, besides Gwen’s introductions of the myth setting that’s probably the same word for word book to book, I did see some pretty unique research too, a few well placed explanations on placards and name drops from Maat and Apate that, bottom line, helps the mythology fit into the story way better than it has in the past.

So. Best book so far? I definitely think so. Especially since I'm gonna have to take back a lot of what I've said about the previous books. What the hell, 4 stars.(less)

In my review of book 3, I declared that the series officially sucked. Crimson Frost is book 4, and I expected that suckiness to continue. And it did... for the first 50% of the book, and then OMG... it actually turned — sssh, careful I don’t want to scare away this feeling. *whisper* It actually turned things around and got GOOD! You read that right, good. G-O-O-D! Say it loud, say it proud. Goooood!

With Logan's dad leading the charge against her, to say their newfound relationship becomes strained would be an understatement. The stars just don't seem to wanna align for these two, 'cause the fates are about to throw them yet another whammy. But love may not even be the issue if the Protectorate's investigation turns up enough evidence against her, 'cause if she's found guilty at all, they'll execute the little gypsy girl. Refusing to sit idly by while the Protectorate refuses to investigate the claims that Loki's Champion Vivian is still out there planning against them, Gwen risks life and freedom to determine Vivian's next move. But it may already be too late, and another one of Gwen's loved ones are about to fall.

There's something about the Mythos Academy series that I really love...but I can't quite put my finger on it. Nothing ever seems to shock or surprise me, and in fact, I figured out who the spy in the Protectorate was the moment the character was introduced, long before Gwen even realized one of them had to be an infiltrator, and I figured out why that certain person had taken on that role just as quickly. It didn't keep me from enjoying the story as it finally unfolded, but I wished these novels had a few tricks up their sleeves that weren't so predictable. Luckily, Gwen is so sassy and likeable I just don't care, and I can't help but root for her and her mythological Scooby Gang. If you haven't read any of these books yet, time to start, 'cause the fifth, Midnight Frost, comes out this August!

I love this series so much, i could not wait to read this. I actually did a little dance when i got the ARC!
Was i disappointed? Hell no, exactly the writing and level i was expecting!
This author, wow, words fail me. She manages to pull me into a story so that i actually feel i am part of it. I am ducking when gwen ducks, cringing when gwen does! I was completely connected to everything that was happening.

It's no secret that despite the predictability and simple writing style, the first three books in this series were among some of the best books I read in 2012. I'm not sure if it's because I read the first three books back-to-back, but I am really struggling with this one.

The first third was about everyone wrongly accusing Gwen of being Loki's Champion and causing all this trouble, and she kind of wallowed in self-pity about how unfair it was, yet, she did nothing and didn't even really try to speak out to defend herself. The first third was about everyone wrongly accusing Gwen of being Loki's Champion and causing all this trouble, and she kind of wallowed in self-pity about how unfair it was, yet, she did nothing and didn't even really try to speak out to defend herself. What happened to the no-nonsense girl that put up with Logan and all that crap thrown at her before? It frustrated me, and it annoyed me.

A third of the way through, finally, there was something going on, but it was the exact same thing - and attack in the library where an artifact was stolen.

And I think I remember her doing this before, but I'm getting a bit annoyed with people being referenced as "the Spartan" or Valkyrie or Amazon or etc. I understand that Logan calls Gwen "Gypsy Girl" as a nickname, but the first-person narration constantly distinguishes the kind - almost to the point of discrimination, but not really? I don't know, it's starting to get to me.

It also didn't help that the reason I liked the other books so much was because I got to know Gwen's friends. They were a good support system for her, and in this book, the only character that was slightly highlighted was Alexei, but he was so stoic of a character, that it was really hard to get much on him. I just wish there was more of Logan or Daphne or Oliver.

The last third of the book was when the story started to pick up - becoming more of the series that I had enjoyed so much. It wasn't hard to figure out who the Reaper of Chaos was and who was behind everything. When things seem too easy or too convenient, that is the time to get suspicious.

But that was when Gwen returned to being the determined character I liked all along - and her thoughts went from thinking things were unfair to actually doing something about it. Instead of being frustrated with her, I started admiring her again for the tough decisions she had to make.

It was also when I was able to get more of the meat of the story - who was involved, why, the meaning of the artifacts, the explanation of the background that lead up to that moment and how everything began to fit together. And of course, the action.

Once again, Estep has created a great story involving the battle between the two gods and the champions serving them, using the mythical tools available to them. I just wish the whole book had been more about that than how unfair it was that Gwen had been blamed for everything.(less)

Once again Jennifer Estep takes readers on a harrowing and dramatic journey with Gwen Frost and the rest of the Mythos gang. The last time we spent time with these characters Mr. Big Bad himself, Loki, was freed from his mythological prison and is now a threat to all of the Pantheon. In addition, Gwen and Logan have finally stopped their little dance around each other and admitted their feelings. So things are obviously set to get complicated at Mythos Academy.

Like most of the other books in this series, Crimson Frost starts off with a bang. Gwen and Logan are having their first official date and things are going fairly smoothly until she is arrested by the Protectorate (Pantheon's police force) and charged with helping Loki go free. For the rest of the book, Gwen must try to prove her innocence while dealing with new threats from the Reapers and the ire of her fellow students.

One of the best things about this series is the growth of our heroine, Gwen. She started off as an immature and damaged girl who was feeling like an outcast in her new environment. Over the course of the books, Gwen has grown more confident in her powers (even if they still scare her at times) and learned how to trust others to help her when she is in trouble. She does still have a tendency to run off into dangerous situations without thinking things through, but not nearly as much as in the earlier installments. Also, it is great to continue reading Gwen's unique voice with all the sarcasm and humor that Ms. Estep is fabulous at writing.

Crimson Frost really shows the strength of Gwen's friendships at Mythos Academy. Despite the dire straits she find herself in, Gwen is immediately supported by all her friends and they do everything they can to help her clear her name. I have really enjoyed getting to know all these kids and adults throughout the series especially the sexy Logan, the pink-loving Valkyrie Daphne, and the grouchy librarian Nickamedes. This book also introduces us to some intriguing newcomers like Logan's father Linus, his stepmother Agrona, and, my personal favorite, Alexei, the enigmatic Bogatyr warrior assigned to watch over Gwen for the Protectorate.

As the fourth installment, this book delves even deeper into the mythology of Pantheon with a special emphasis on the artifacts being housed in the Library of Antiquities. I loved this part of the plot due to my background in history and archives! Like all the other Mythos books, Crimson Frost is full of suspense and potential danger. The series is definitely getting darker and, as a reader, I found myself flipping pages quickly to see if the characters got through everything unscathed. Always the sign of a good book for me!

Once again, this was a great installment in a series that is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I have really become invested in these characters and their world. Can't wait to read Midnight Frost and see what Estep gives us next!(less)

Recommendation : This is a great addition to the Mythos Academy series. A must read series in my opinion. So if you are looking for a book about extraordinary teens trying to save the world, give this one a try.

Crimson Frost steps up the game with the arrival of the Protectorate. Now I know that Gwen is a magnet for all things horrible, but this arrival is one of the worst timed ones yet.

Crimson Frost in the fourth book in the Mythos Academy series. Gwen Frost attended regular high school until her mother died and she was thrown into the magical world that is Mythos Academy. I am so INVOLVED in the Frost series it is not even funny. I’d give up a letter to go to Hogwarts if I could go to Mythos instead.

Our gypsy girl, Gwen, has grown so much and it is wonderful to watch her progression from misfit to heroine over the course of these books. She isn’t perfect but she is so relatable and endearing. What happened: Logan and Gwen are finally having their first date when a group of men, led by Logan's father, arrest Gwen. They claim she is a Reaper and helped set Loki free. Now, Gwen's facing the consequences of her actions, with the Protectorate putting her on trial. The added twist? They arrested her on her first date with Logan and Logan's dad is the leader of the Protectorate. How's that for an awkward meet-the-parents?

Most of the book deals with Gwen's trial and the ostracization she experiences after Logan's dad denounces her as a Reaper in front of the entire school. This is by far the darkest chapter in the series so far, as Gwen faces possible execution if she's found guilty. Thankfully, she still has allies, including the usual suspects (Daphne, Carson, Oliver, Logan, Metis, Nickamedes, Morgan, and her grandmother) but it's a small number in the face of all of the hatred Gwen faces since she has to continue going to school while on trial. It's so bad, in fact, that she's assigned a guard by the Protectorate. Compounding this issue is the fact that Gwen suspects someone on the Protectorate -- or someone close to a Protectorate member -- is actually a Reaper, manipulating things so that Gwen is found guilty. It's a classic mystery on some levels, which I loved, but Jennifer Estep also explores the emotional repurcussions in a very satisfying way.

The romance also goes up a notch in CRIMSON FROST, though not for long. It's so fun to see Gwen and Logan go on their first date, even though it gets interrupted. And while the trial does put a damper on their romance, sparks fly for some other characters in the book. Plus, Gwen and Logan's relationship does continue to develop as we learn more about Logan's family. It's really nice to see what makes Logan tick and we get more insights into his background and childhood than ever before. Logan fans will definitely want to read CRIMSON FROST to learn more of his story.

The introduction of the Protectorate was also really neat because we get to see more of how the world works. The first three books were very focused on Mythos Academy and its internal workings (with some insights into other schools), and now we get to see how other aspects of the universe function. I knew there had to be some sort of governing body and so I was excited to see how the Protectorate worked and how existing characters would interact with members of this body. Their judicial system is far from democratic but it's really neat. The mechanisms used for truth-telling are very original and I can't want to see what everyone thinks. (No spoilers, since the book is brand new, but you can hit me up on Twitter to chat!

Jennifer Estep has truly outdone herself with CRIMSON FROST. The Mythos Academy books are one of the few YA series that I love and this is the strongest entry yet. It's an thrilling novel that really opens up the world that Gwen and her friends live in. I'm going to go crazy counting the days until MIDNIGHT FROST!

I like this series. Yes, it's a bit clichéd with its underdog protagonist, but I do like the twist Estep puts on Gwen as both unacknowledged champion and underdog. The book features one Gwen Frost, a Gypsy (no not that kind) who has magic powers that let her see the memories and feelings attached to things people have touched. Gwen has many friends, all with their own powers, and they fight evil together.

The thing is, the book is well written in the sense of proper structure and the like and it has an engaging story arch, and really all the ingredients for a good book, but sadly it lacks something very important; depth to the characters. They have no personality! The cast goes as such; The witty lead, the pretty but tough besty, the cute nerd, the broody love interest, the evil one, the one-you-think-is-good-but-is-evil, the exasperated teacher, and a handful of more one dimensional characters that fail to invoke any sense of empathy.

The plot follows a beat that you could waltz to its so predictable, but is still interesting, and I did manage to get entertained for a bit. And it is true that the premise is interesting, but it all fails to excuse the horrible characters!

Let's just focus on Gwen; such care is put into describing the outfit of the day that I wish that the same care had been invested in to the wearer. Gwen seems to put much more care into making sure she has a new wisecrack, and less is put into solving the problems she faces. The girl must be brain damaged because I can accurately guess who the villain is and their whole evil scheme by the time that little Gwen is still chasing after her red herring.

I know that this is not what a lot of other book reviewers are saying about this book but this is my opinion, I felt it had the makings of a great story if the characters had more than the emotional depth of a puddle.

As I have stated in my other reviews of this series, I do not understand why I love these books. The writing isn't that great, the recap of previous books is tedious, and the plot truds along as if it were impersonating a snail.

BUT I LOVE THEM!!!!

Gwen and Logan are finally going on a date! But…it’s horribly interrupted with pain and misery and then a series of unlikely events happen and everyone at the school hates Gwen again.

In the last book, Dark Frost, Gwen was essentially forced into freeing the evil god, Loki. Now the fate of the world was on her shoulders, but to intensify the situation Gwen was arrested by the Protectorate on bogus charges. But she wasn’t arrested on a normal day, it was her first date with Logan UNF Quinn (yes, one of my favorite fictional males to date). While the real threat is still out there, Gwen must also prepare to defend herself for the trial of her life. She has the backing of her boyfriend and friends, but nothing is as simple as that. I sat down and buckled up for the ride.

One of the reasons I adore this series is because of the heroine, Gwen Frost. She is kick-ass and has a good head on her shoulders. I’d really want to be friends with her in real life. Not to be outdone, is the Spartan, Logan, aka the manwhore at Mythos Academy…but he has seen the light and only has eyes for Gwen. Yes, I was ready for some loving!!

I also adored so many of the secondary characters in this series. Not only would I want Gwen for a friend in real life, but her friends as well. I think it’s hard to write successful likeable supporting characters, and Ms. Estep does this so well. As much as I loved Daphne, Kenzi, Oliver, Carson and Alexei, my favorite is Vic. Hands. Down. I found myself always laughing when he said anything! He is pure awesome!!!!

Twists and turns and double crossings: oh how I love them. We all knew there was an insider once Gwen started putting two and two together, but who it was the next mystery. This person was eventually revealed and it really did fill in so many holes, but at the same time made me feel sad because there had been so many pointless killings. Who was it? I’m not telling but I bet you won’t guess!

Ok, so I have to give some constructive criticism on this, right? Well, I guess I would have liked some more kissy time with Gwen and Logan. This installment just didn’t have time for it though *cries*. I understand that, but I am a total sucker for romance and wish that some moment (or a long moment) could have been stolen. Sadly, I think I will have to wait for the dust to settle before they have a chance for some smexy time.

The ending was heart wrenching, I was so upset!! Gwen is a stronger person than I would be. I don’t know how I will make it to the next book!! If you love Mythology I can’t rec this series enough. Jennifer Estep has continuously impressed me with her break-out into the YA genre. Her Mythos Academy series is now one of my top YA paranormal series. What began first as a mediocre, clichéd Touch of Frost soon blossomed into this epic of massive proportions that cannot be contained. Time after time, I am repeatedly surprised by Jennifer's growth in writing for a YA audience. Before, I found Gwen a dull, stereotypical Bella kind of character. At this point, Gwen is one of the fiercest YA protagonists ever to exist.

Crimson Frost begins immediately after the horrifying events of Dark Frost. As with most books and movies, the worst news comes at the best time, as in Logan's daddy in charge of prosecuting poor Gwen for freeing Loki. Poor Gwen seems to be back at square -1000 with everyone at the Academy wanting to kill her, and her now incredibly awkward relationship with Logan. Sometimes, I just want to throw Jennifer Estep around to give Gwen her happy ending already. Throughout the entire series, Gwen has to face so many threats without thanks, and almost dies constantly. Enough, is enough! However, her pain is the reader's gain, so I can totally understand why Gwen should continue suffering.

What makes me really love the Mythos Academy series is the character growth that is constantly shown throughout the series. Characters that were first shown as shallow and dependent gradually mature into likable, strong supporting characters. Unlike many series that just focus mainly on the main protagonists, Mythos Academy always includes other characters in the main events, and they aren't just back-up singers, they're all part of the action as well. Although Crimson Frost didn't focus as much on the supporting characters as the previous books did because a majority of the focus was on Gwen's problems and turmoil, there was still some new revelations for some of the sideline characters that made the book all the more exciting to read.

After finishing Crimson Frost, I was at a sort of loss. The book was nearly perfect in my eyes. The characters were vivid and relatable, the plot was imaginative and innovative, everything seemed perfect. Then I realized my problem: I already figured out everything that was going on before it actually happened. This did not make my enjoyment of this book any less, but I feel like that if a book is predictable, it shouldn't receive a rating greater than the enjoyment rating. If I was grading this solely on my enjoyment, then it would've received a 5 star rating. Unfortunately, the predictability factor just lowers the rating by a mere half star.

Despite its predictability, Crimson Frost by no means is one of those over-the-top books. The fast-pace of the story keeps the reader from finding this a dull, tedious read. All of the characters have some spark in them that electrifies the pages with their dialogue and interactions alone. The pivotal relationship between Gwen and Logan is tested throughout this book especially, and it's so heartbreaking to see two people who belong with each other having to face such terrible trials. Jennifer Estep has penned the best book of the Mythos Academy series yet, and I can't wait to read the next book to defy my expectations.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the Mythos Academy and consider it to be one of my favourite YA paranormal series – this latest instalment is no exception. Gwen’s starting to grow up and accept her role in the big battle of good vs. evil. Instead of blaming the gods and circumstances, she’s trying to work out how she can beat Loki – and she realizes she can’t do it alone. Logan, Daphne, Carson, Oliver and Kenzie are all along for the ride along with both new characters and some old faces to help Gwen with the tremendous task in front of her.

This book is less focused on the gang of Mythos students and more on Gwen herself – not to say that there aren’t some fantastic scenes with her friends – but Gwen is more focused on the situation she finds herself in and less preoccupied with the student population of Mythos Academy. I enjoyed Estep’s writing but there were times when I thought some of Gwen’s internal monologues were a little long-winded. The Logan/Gwen interactions were adorable and I loved reading them together.

As in the previous books of the series, I thought the introduction of different mythological creatures, gods and warriors to be incredibly interesting and fantastically woven in with the story. It’s one of my favourite parts of the story to read about stories I know as well as being educated (and entertainingly so) about myths I’m more unfamiliar with.

The climax of the story wasn’t exactly a surprise but – as the saying goes – it’s the journey rather than the destination that is important and I enjoyed how Gwen got there. There was plenty of action, drama and enough romance along the way that kept me reading till the final page.

Midnight Frost, the fifth book in the Mythos Academy, is set to be released in August of 2013 and after reading Crimson Frost I can’t wait to see what happens next in the battle between Gwen, the reapers and Loki – the god of Chaos.(less)

Crimson Frost is book 4 in the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep. The book picks up where the last book " Dark Frost " left off. So in the midst of being attacked by her fellow students Gwen has to also find a way to prove her innocence. I really loved reading Crimson Frost. Even though it is the fourth full length book in the series it is still very enthralling and every time you think you know what is going to happen Jennifer throws in another twist and your left in awe. There's more at stake now than ever with Loki freed and the action that ensues is riveting. I think it is very nice seeing the strength of the friendships and bonds that Gwen has made in the past novels, really come to light here. There are some things mentioned toward the end of the book that make me very curious to see what' s in store for these friends in book 5 but I am not going to tell what,you will just have to read it and see. Speaking of the end of the book I was really shocked by what happened between Logan and Gwen and I am anxious to see where they go from here. Full of action, suspense and a little bit of romance I highly recommend Crimson Frost to fans of urban fantasy and PNR and of course especially Jennifer Estep fans. But I would like to note that I highly suggest reading the rest of the series first.
