First published in 1832, this novel is pedantic and dense. A young man, Raphael, has lost all is wealth and has become a disrepute and gambler. He plans to throw himself into the Seine, but waits until night, and in the meantime visits an antiquities store where he receives a piece of skin from a goat from the Himalayas; it has an inscription said to be Sanskrit, He can get everything he wishes, but the skin will shrink, and when it is gone Raphael will die. There goes on a long story about h...more

A young man, having gambled away his last gold coin, walks to the Seine to commit suicide. While he waits for darkness to fall, he wanders into a curiosity shop where he comes across a wild ass’s skin. This talisman, he learns, will grant every wish. But with each wish granted the pelt shrinks, and the owner’s lifespan shrinks accordingly. The Faustian tale moves both forward, as the young owner gains the wealth he desires and therefore draws ever closer to his own demise, and backward a...more

I read Balzac first, when I was very young, and I enjoyed the stories very much. The second time was when I became interested in history. That was even better. One (who?) has said that ”for better understanding France in 19. century, you’d better read Balzac”. He is the auther of ”Studies of Manners in the 19th. century”!

بار اول بی آن که به تاریخ علاقمند باشم، از خواندن بالزاک لذت بردم. سال ها بعد که تاریخ ...more

It's one of those books which is romantic and philosophical too, well not really philosophical textbook but having some philosophical material in it. Well, I think any book dealing somehow with suicide have some philosophy in it. Right?

It's said that Freud read this in one sitting, and afterward decided more firmly in favor of his suicide.

My goodness.

Magical realism form a much earlier age. I had no real expectations -- didn't even expect to actually read it -- but this ended up being a pretty gripping page-turner. Amazing ruminations on the flailing nature of desire and its various ill effects.

This is one of my favorite title's of a book. I think he should have used the letter S more though. Maybe it's just the translation that puts all those Ss together there. Balzac's pretty damn good nonetheless.

I tried listening to this book, but was unable to finish it and returned it to the library. Usually, I try to finish books. Cousin Bette was much more interesting.

And no, we're not talking about some of our colleagues.... The title in French is more revealing : La peau de chagrin (Sorrow skin) A must-read for our society...

If you like Wilde's Pic of Dorian Grey, you'll love this one. We all go through this at some point; we all consider selling our soul's in some form or other.

I was attracted to the book because it was called the Fatal Skin and it was referred to in another of my favorite author's work ( I can't recall which one).
