"I shall get revenge for our family an' the whole MacGregor Clan. The Campbells have wronged us for two centuries."

Revenge is an age old plot driver, but Hudson Taylor breathes fresh life into it. And she does it sooo well. Exciting conflict rages through the start of this book. The Campbells have always treated the MacGregor clan as unworthy peasants, but this last atrocity sends Malcolm to the Carolinas, bent on exacting revenge while he attempts to rescue his family. Even while revenge and co

Taylor is an author who clearly does not believe in the maxim "Show, don't tell." And even then, her telling is often faulty. The characters tell the reader they are falling in love long before they have had any significant interactions with the other party (besides, you know, the kidnapping - hardly the basis for love).

The main female lead starts commenting on the male lead's lack of religious belief before he ever even comments on religion himself. It seemed like the author suddenly invented a

I'm sorry. I just can't read this book. I have so many complaints and quirks against For Love or Loyalty. I'm just so annoyed by all of this. I will, of course, explain in further detail. Just continue reading if you want to read them. Or don't. I don't care. I have no intention of sugarcoating this book. I will be blunt and quick.

The dialogue is a piece of work. Remember Romeo and Juliet? Remember how terrible that dialogue is. All those...whatever words

For Love or Loyalty is a good title for this touching historical romance novel. It relates to more than one instance.

The serene appearance of the cover is also a good choice. It is very descriptive of the female main character and the background hints at the storyline. It is light enough to be eye-catching and dark enough to set the verve of the story.

The characterization was solid and the reader felt a definite connection to each.

I love “highland” type stories. I find Ireland, Scotland, Wales c

It’s only book one and I’m already in love with this series!!!
This story has the right mix of suspense, romance, revenge, conflict, memorable characters and so much more.
Jennifer’s writing style is wonderfully descriptive- it’s almost intoxicating!

At first I'll admit I was a little reluctant when it came to reading a story where a captive falls in love with her captor, as the last story I read with a similar story line was a bit of a disappointment. Jennifer Hudson Taylor has a knack for creating a story that's adventurous as well as romantic, so I don't know what I was thinking worrying about For Love or Loyalty. It was everything that I enjoy in Christian fiction speckled with unique situations for our hero and heroine all with a little ...more

I will admit that this one took a bit of effort to get into. I nearly set it aside. Part of that was the fact that there isn't much back story to explain why Glenn Campbell kidnaps and sells the MacGregor women. Malcolm's anger is understandable, but I never did really understand why Lauren's father was so suddenly and uncontrollably angry, even as some questions were answered in the end. He was a true example of how unfettered hatred can destroy a person.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed t

Love love love this book! I was SO blessed by this story! For love or loyalty is such an adventure and full journey! Lauren is the kind of Christian woman I want to be and yet this book also holds the reality that even the strongest in Faith have their moments of fear and, sadly, doubt. It also shows how as humans we can't always see the big picture like God can, but that doesn't mean He leaves us! :) Starting out in Scotland Jennifer takes us across the sea to America. Won this book in a good reads giveaway.

Quick review for this one.

Well, first thing I noticed was that this book is one of those faith books. Which always make me leery.

The story was alright.I felt like there wasn't enough background. I thought Malcolm and Lauren's relationship wasn't developed enough. The father also seemed very angry for no reason.

Don't get me wrong, filtering out the stuff about God, this was enjoyable however there were a few little things that I just could not stand.

I am a big fan of Scottish Historical novels and have greatly enjoyed the other Jennifer Hudson Taylor books I have read.

One again she did not disappoint.

For Love or Loyalty begins in Scotland with the feud between the MacGregor and Campbell clans. When Duncan Campbell kidnaps two of the MacGregor women, Malcom MacGregor retaliates by kidnapping Lauren Campbell.

Lauren is willing to help free her friends, but does not realize the price she will have to pay. Not until she is aboard ship on her wa

I received this book for review as part of Goodreads first-year program. Mine was an ARC, with expected release in November 2013. The story is an interesting one, of rival Scottish clans, of poverty and sale of innocents into indentured servitude and love that grows from the human heart that comes to faith in God. I liked this story, though it may be formulaic at times. It flowed well and was instructive of the time period in which it was written. The characters didn't cause me to seek the next ...more

A few years ago I read a Jennifer Hudson Taylor book and enjoyed it. I enjoyed this one as well, however, it's not particularly written for a mature thinking mind. That sounds bad, and I don't mean it to be. YA, or junior books are not bad, just not written with wording that adults may enjoy sinking their teeth into. For Love or Loyalty may not have been intended for YA or Junior audiences, but the style fits those age brackets more than true adult level. This is why I gave it a 4 instead of 3. ...more

This is the first book in MacGregor Legacy series and I thought it was a good, solid read. The Cambpell and MacGregor clans are locked in an age-old feud. When the Campbells abduct Malcolm MacGregor's mother/sister and sell them as indentured servants to America, Malcolm takes Lauren Campbell intending to exchange her for his mother. During the voyage to America, Malcolm sees Lauren's heart and knows she is not like her father, Duncan (an earlier book edition had her father's name as Glenn). Her ...more

Malcom MacGregor of Scotland has kidnapped Lauren Campbell because her father took Malcom's mother and sister (Lauren's friends) and sold them for indentured servitude over in the Colonies. The MacGregors owed the Campbells money, and Duncan Campbell is a man who holds on to a grudge and is dangerous when he has a vendetta against another.

Lauren realizes that Malcom's mother, Iona, needs to be rescued and is willing to put up with her own indentured se

This book started off rocky and confusing and I nearly put it down. I'm glad I didn't. Taylor introduced a number of characters as the very beginning that were very hard to follow. I actually thought I had stumbled into the middle of a series rather than the start of one. I stuck with it and the main characters quickly grew on me.

Malcolm was a bit confusing as if he couldn't quite decide whether he was bad or good. Lauren is a sweetheart of a character that seemed to have emerged from a very da

"For Love or Loyalty" takes place in Scotland in 1760 and involves two feuding families: the Campbells and the MacGregors. When Duncan Campbell oversteps his position and ruins Malcolm MacGregor's home and family, Malcolm decides he will seek revenge, and that means using Duncan's daughter, Lauren, to get it.

Fast-paced and fully captivating, I found myself lost in the past and totally involved with both Malcolm and Lauren who both ended up being victims of Duncan's wrath and sick sense of justic

I really enjoy stories about Highlanders, and this one was no exception. Malcolm is a gruff gentleman who finds his family’s village destroyed and his mother and sister missing upon return from an expedition. The two begin their trek across the Atlantic following the trail of Malcolm’s missing family members. What begins as a story of revenge and retaliation soon turns into a story of for ...more

Hard to believe when looking at plaid fabrics that each of these is like a calling card of sorts. In Scotland, each clan or family was identified based on the plaid fabric that each of them wore over their clothing, that way they could easily be identified as friend or foe. In the case of the latest novel from Jennifer Hudson Taylor, it identified the members of the MacGregor or Campbell family who remained at more than just odds with one another. The Campbell family was in a position of collect ...more

For Love Or Loyalty was a great book. While I liked the first half, it was the last half that I found very good and thrilling! I liked how the story wasn't predictable and I was really surprised by some of the things that happened in the book.

For Love or Loyalty by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is the first book in The MacGregor Legacy series. I liked the two main characters in the book, but the story line itself was a little much to me. Too many things happened in quick succession that it went from being sort of realistic to absolutely not realistic. Even though I was irritated at the plot ideas, I did enjoy the book because the characters and the dialogue were so well written. I really want to read about the other MacGregor brothers in th ...more

Malcolm comes undone when he arrives to his village to see devastation and ruin everywhere. His mother and sister have been kidnapped and sold into slavery, his brother has been tortured and left for dead, and homes have been burned to the ground…..all because taxes were due and the Campbell clan took things too far to prove a point. Malcolm becomes enraged and is determined to seek revenge in his hate towards this barbaric family. When one of his men grabs Lauren Campbell in retaliat

Revenge, Bitterness, Betrayal. Three of the ugliest concepts man knows came together at the beginning of For Love or Loyalty....

The first pages describe the Scottish hills on a cold March day.
Two MacGregor brother's are riding home. As they draw near to their village of Inverawe, they can smell the tang of smoke and hear the wailing of women.

Their landlords, the Campbells, have torched their possessions and dragged away some of their wives, mothers, and daughters. This was all because the rent w
