Somehow, Danny rushes out onto the street, grabbing Colin’s little sister and saving her life. Colin and his sister go home and Colin thought that Danny was a actually a superhuman. Ten years ago, there were a lot of superhumans, but they all lost their powers on mystery day. Danny soon found out that he was the son of Quantum, a superhero that can move time slowly so that he is existing faster than the speed of light. And Colin found out that he can hear things, and he is the son of Energy and Titan. Soon though, a helicopter that is inhabited by a man who wants to strip Colin and Danny of their powers abducts Danny, and Colin escaped. Colin soon got word that Danny,and Energy and Titan, his parents, were on a plane to America. Florida to be exact. So Colin boarded a plane and ended up somewhere in America, in a shelter for homeless kids. He befriended a seventeen-year-old and they together drove to New York, where Colin went to meet a superhuman friend of his fathers named Solomon Cord. Solomon and Colin boarded a helicopter and went to Florida. Here, they beat up the bad guys and captured the good guys, Danny, Energy, and Titan. There was a thing called a power dampener, and this thing can take away all the superhuman’s powers. Danny reached in and broke the wires in the machine, destroying it in the process. Danny lost his right arm, but all of the other superheroes lived. A happy ending!

This was a great book. I thought that the level of action was just right. Some books have so much action that it doesn’t seem realistic. This book, I felt, made he believe in superhumans, if you know what I mean. If I were a little kid, I would think that superheroes actually did exist. Also, the story seemed to make sense. Sometimes the author might just add in something to make the story sound fluid, but it ends up sounding stupid. In this story, everything happened for a reason, which happened because of something else, and so on. In addition, it told the story from different places in the world. For instance, it may have narrarated somebody in England, then the next chapter the story would be taking place in Florida. I think the best theme for this heroic story is, “If you’re gonna die, die for something that’s right.” Danny risked his life trying to shut off the power dampener, and he still ended up losing his right arm. But in the end, he ended up saving a lot of lives. And that is certainly what a superhero does.(less)

This book was action packed and flowed fast most of the way through. If you're looking for a thought provoking read filled with super powers and action, I would choose a different book. This book was action packed and flowed fast most of the way through. If you're looking for a thought provoking read filled with super powers and action, I would choose a different book. If you are looking for a fast paced read that's simplistic and easy in both reading and flow without any deep emotional pull and is just fun all around, this book is a recommend for you.

Done in superhero comics fashion but in book form, The Awakening is action packed with an overall neck breaking speed. Scenes and events happen right away one after another, with minimal build up between the characters. Hence, the character building and characterization suffers from the high focus on action and plot.

There are a slew of characters. The prologue chapter starts out with a seemingly important and high action scene. Multitudes of superheroes running, flying, and tumbling about. When the first chapters starts, new characters are thrust upon the story and the time jumps forward 10 years. Moments retain no emotional qualities as characters are forced to move on to the next scene. This is the main reason why this book lost so many points.

There weren't enough of a sense of emotional impact on any of the characters. There were slow moments placed throughout the book but those moments don't focus enough of the characters being people. These moments set the characters up to be more stereotypical and in certain areas comic and pace relief without any relevant (other than adding slight at-that-moment tension and point to carry the plot over to the next big scene) details to the characters.

Because of the lack of characterization, tension and tone of the story were off in multitude of scenes. The scene where Danny accidently harms a certain someone is just an "Oh..." moment rather than a "OH. MY. [BLEEP!]" moment. Or the ending "sacrifices" didn't feel like heavy sacrifices.

The plot does carry over well quite nicely. Everything ties in together and with purpose. The pacing, though fast, worked well to connect one point/scene to another.

Overall, the book suffers from a lack of characterization and tight realistic (to the book, not as in real life) emotions and moments, but makes up for it in pacing, action, and plot ideas. This will be a quick and fun read.

Verdict: Library check out. I would recommend for comic book fans. But for my personal shelf, I would say pass.

Colin and Danny are two teenage boys who live normal lives, or so they think. "Mystery Day" is a celebration of the superheros of the near future for everyone around the world in their time. According to many stories and records, during an epic battle of all time with superhumans and villains, all, including the villains, just simply disappeared. Which, in reality, they lost their super powers and went into a type of retirement. Very few, such as the Daltons, actually escaped with their lives - in the world's point of view. After many twists and turns, Danny realizes the truth about his father and realizes he may be a superhuman himself. Colin also learns the truth about his parents and their complicated histories. The conclusion of this 264 paged book was a major cliffhanger, fulfilling the first section of "Quantum's Prophecy" and leaving room for a much wanted sequel.

Michael Carroll's enthralling book of superhumans and adventures was well thought out and planned. His characters, although they were a bit hard to keep track of, were practically popping out of the pages with their tangible personalities. This book will appeal to many age groups, but mostly kids or young adults. It has high action and adventure all wrapped around a carefull plotted story with so many twists and turns that one can't even expect what's coming. Troubles with super powers are the least of the two boy's worries when they have to travel around the whole world, the theme of the whole book seemingly mystery.

Quantum Prophecy: The Awakening by Michael Carrol was a truly good book. It was well written and filled with acion and forshadowing, leaving an excellent opening for a sequel. For example, quotes such as "He was silent for a few seconds, then said, 'Tha's far fewer than will die in the war. Acceptable losses.'" (pg 228) leave the readers in suspense, or, one of the last few lines of the book (pg. 264) "He remebered the vision he had of himself leadin an army. IN th vision, Danny's fuure self had a mechanical right arm." This last sentence to a reader is a major cliffhanger with a jaw-dropping ending. Quantum Prophecy:the Awaking is truly an amazing choice to read.

I enjoyed this book, but think I would have liked it even more as a kid. In the days when I hid out in the barn to read comic books about Batman and Superman and all the others, I would have found it much more exciting.

Quantum Prophecy: The Awakening was a good start to a potentially good series. The concept reminded me a little bit of the TV show Heroes, and this aspect is what lured me in. The main characters of this book are 13 year old boys who have just discovered that they are a little bit more than normal. Having them be so young left me with mixed feelings. It’s hard for me to connect to such young characters but at the same time, I really enjoyed watching them discover themselves.

As a reader, I was captivated from the very first chapter. The book begins with normal people given a homework assignment about the disappearance of the superhumans ten years before. Who doesn't love super heros? Who wouldn't love to be a super hero? The boys in this book feel the same way as I do. Early in the book, questions arrise when Danny, one of Colin's friends, displays extrodinary speed in a heroic act. Colin doesn't question it at first, but he comes to the realization that Danny is superhuman! Danny only confirms this accusation; he is the son of Quantum, a superfast super hero from ten years ago. Colin of course has trouble sleeping that night in his jealousy, and suddenly begins to hear things he shouldn't. Things too far away from him to hear. While listening, he hears Danny and his father on their way to his house with a helecopter following them, hoping for a clean abduction. Colin alerts his parents and they try to escape. While avoiding their pursuers, Colin learns his parents were once superhumans too, Energy and the Titan. The villians from ten years ago have returned to take away Colin and Danny's powers just as they had their parents. The story follows the adventure of Colin and Danny as they try to hang on to the powers they've just begun to develop. We also learn why it is so important to Danny's father that their powers are taken away, since he had helped stage the entire kidnapping of his own son! I was mesmorized by the action-packed first adventure of Colin and Danny!

As a teacher, I see many opportunities for this book in the classroom. This book offers many opportunities to cross content areas. The book has science, physics, math, social studies, and much more. This book would be wonderful for analyzing plot progression. And who doesn't love a story about super heros? The book also poses questions of what is right and what is wrong that would make interesting discussion and could be used within a lesson and applied to current events. The only problem I forsee with this text is the numerous characters, but this also serves as a teaching opportunity because this would be a wonderful book to have students create a character wheel -- a wheel with all with all the characters, different colors for the superhumans, connections between the superhumans and their alias, and connections between the charaters. The unique thing about the characters is that whether they are good or evil is open to discussion. This would make an interesting discussion and/or debate. We could even put one of the 'villians' on trail and have a moch trail in the classroom for a class activity. This would have students drawing from the text and supporting their stance.

Overall, I loved this book and eagerly await the day that I have enough time to complete the series. The only problem with this book is the gripping ending that leaves soooo many questions unanswered. The book is obviously the first book in a series, but this is a good thing. Reading the first book in a series as a class would get students intrested in more reading and finishing the series -- a teachers goal!

When I first started reading this book, I was a bit wary. I was afraid it was going to be a knock-off of Superman or any other Superhero that I have heard about. I won't say it was incredible, or creative, but it was definitely entertaining and well worth reading. The thing that made me actually read past chapter one was the same thing that made me like this book so much: it was about super heroes...and it wasn't dirty, perverted garbage- and yes, this is the only book of its kind that I have found that hasn't been.

I can't quite decide--this was in the juvenile section at my public library but the main characters were 13 and 14. So juvenile or YA? Anyway, that said I can now go on.

I liked it. The idea is cool ... "What if there had been superhumans ... and what if they disappeared?" Their powers were different than many of the comic book movies recently released.

Quantum Prophecy is a YA book by Irish author Michael Carroll, about a three kids, Danny, Colin and later Renata who discover that they posses superpowers. Overall, the book was alright. It felt a bit dry and dialogue heavy at times, and felt like it was really slow to start. The ending picked up the pace, but I felt like parts of it were fairly predictable. I enjoyed sections of it (such as the safe house and Razor's character), but it didn't really make me want to pick up the next one. Granted, it also felt a bit like it was setup for the start of the story, and the next one might actually be better in that regard.

I thought it was certainly an interesting take on superheroes that's different than Marvel or DC. Carroll gives us completely new heroes to love (my favorite so far being Energy) and in actuality creates an entirely new world.

Wow! This is a great start to a series! It's basically the premise of what if superheroes really did exist and then suddenly one day, didn't. I just finished The Awakening and can't wait to read the next installment! Because this is referenced as a YA novel, I didn't expect too much from it, but ended up being surprised by how much it pulled me in. The character development is solid and consistent throughout QP1, Carroll's plot lines are intriguing, and the pacing was enough to keep me pretty well engaged from cover to cover. I really liked The Awakening. It was an excellent superhero book, though a little predictable at times. I kind of guessed most of the plot twists a few chapters before they were revealed. The predictability didn’t take away from the story at all, because while I guessed things correctly, there were always questions leading up to the reveal. Good concept - there were superheroes and supervillans but they all disappeared ten years ago in the middle of an epic battle.
What happened?
Well, I can't say much more without giving away the whole plot.
I like that Carroll manages to both have a complete story with an ending and leave you hanging at the same time. I really hate it when authors just stop and say "wait until the next book." The minor story line needs to wrap up even if the major one hasn't and Carroll nails it.
