There's no place like home.

For Princess Miya Black, 'home' is Clover Island, a tiny dot of a place not even named on most maps. Founded fifteen years ago by her parents, ex-pirate Tomas "Boots" Black and ex-princess Lilith "Lily" Brightburn, it's a place for second chances and new beginnings. It's there that Miya was born, there she grew up, and there she now lives, spendi

Miya Black, Pirate Princess: Adventure Dawns is a fun little book by Ben White. Miya is the daughter of Queen Lilith and King Tomas Black, ex-pirate of Clover Island. Miya is just turning fourteen and, much to her chagrin, a ball is being held in her honour. Miya hates balls, she hates dresses, she hates the responsibilities of being a princess. All she wants is to be a pirate like her father and sail the seas having pirate adventures. When Clover island is threatened by dreaded pirate Badger Pe ...more

This is a charming example of children's fiction. The main character, Miya Black, is a fantastic female character - gritty, determined and loyal. Her supporting characters also have surprising depth and the action scenes pull no punches! 8-year-old me would have loved this book about a princess who is really a pirate and gets to sail her own ship around delivering beat-downs to everyone who gets in her way.

This novel makes for a good, quick read on the beach or somewhere just as pleasant. Miya is a very likable and fun character to read about, constantly active and always inquisitive and caring. There are spikes of excitement for the reader when he/she becomes aware that the small island Miya lives on is being threatened by outside forces. The overall plot is interesting, a little bland in places, and will keep the reader entertained for most of the book. The reader will find the pirate history a ...more

Oh, hello! I'm Ben, Benjamin Joseph Kuniyoshi White if you're not into the whole brevity thing, BJK White if you're somewhere in the middle. I'm sometimes an author person. To get specific, I'm the leastselling author of the Miya Black, Pirate Princess series, as well as the superhero diary of Charlotte Powers, the zombie-infested unlife of Imogen Shroud, the slightly depressing world of Resonance ...more
