A Hollow Cube is a Lonely Space is a collection of Bizarro short stories by S.D. Foster.

A book of short stories, especially those written by a new author, is always a dicey proposition. Fortunately, S.D. Foster has a good grasp of the form. The stories within range from just a page to eight pages.

The 24 stories within cover quite a bit of ground. Some are a funny, some sad, and some thought provoking. All are more than a little strange. Standouts for me include Slothra, the story of an aging gi...more

What can I say about this book of short stories. It's bizarro so very unique but extremely existential. I feel like I should lie on a couch as should the human race curled in a ball in the fetal position and talk about who and what we are.

It's bizarro and it's deep and meaningful. That or Shelby is fucking with us. Hmmmmm omg he's fucking with us!!!!!!!

These short stories are hard to describe, I found some, the first for example about the life of an apple to be very heavy oh is he saying that we...more

You can read my entire discussion here.

Review snippet: "Foster’s prose at times is reminiscent of old tales with characters who have sing-song names are often faced with moral dilemmas, but even as he engages in familiar story formats, his prose is malleable. As the quotes from “Matilda Goes Shopping” demonstrate, Foster creates his stories not just in details but also in the very structure of his sentences – gluttonous sentences for a story about a gluttonous man. A later story, “Snowman,” wher...more

If you follow my reviews, you may have noticed that I review a lot of what's classified as Bizarro fiction. A Hollow Cube is a Lonely Space by S.D. Foster is part of the New Bizarro Authors Series, which tests the waters with new writers. This one is a collection of short stories. Very short stories. And being from a new writer, this can sometimes be problematic. Fortunately, this collection works for the most part.

Among the stories are the life of an orange, a retiring giant monster, reflection...more

A Hollow Cube is a Lonely Space is in your bookshelf. Do you read it? More importantly, it is at your local bookseller (or you stared at it on Amazon.com) and you wonder, do you buy it?

(regarding buying): Yes, everyone should buy it. This is an author who should receive the benefits of the NBAS series.

(regarding reading): This is a little bit dicier. My first question is, How's S.D. Foster doing? He still alive or did he kill himself in any of the fashions listed through these short stories. See...more

A Hollow Cube is a Lonesome Space

This…is the most bizarre collection of tales I have ever laid eyes on.
But that just means it fits perfectly with the Bizarro Books genre it was published with. We see here a collection of 23 stories so bizarre; it might dazzle you if you don’t watch out. The stories are self contained, and whether the messages I read into them are the same as the ones you will read into them (assuming you’ll read this book, which I strongely advice you should) or even the message...more

How can I describe S.D. Foster’s A Hollow Cube is a Lonely Space?

I can say this is what happens when Bizarro gets literary.

I can tell you that this a collection of twenty-three short stories, lovingly crafted, expertly told with a feel for language, rhythm and a definite literary arch.

I can say, “Share this with your friends who consider their tastes to be more ‘literary’ – you’ll get them hooked.”

Or I can say, “This is a great bedtime book – twenty-three short tales to open the gates to dreamla...more

I thought I had read bizarro fiction before. Apparently I was wrong, because this collection was truly bizarre.

It's a genre I've seen floating about the periphery of my reading tastes, but unlike other genres that I've read to satisfy my curiosity, I've kept bizarro at arms length. Then S.D. Foster contacted me, looking for a review a few months back with this collection, so I decided it was time I gave it a chance.

Now, Eraserhead Press has a habit of scouting out promising new talent in the gen...more

Yet another offering from Eraserhead's 'New Bizarro Author Series,' this time introducing the world to UK writer S.D. Foster with 23 short-short stories, most having a fairy tale feel.

Among my favorites are 'Matilda Goes Shopping,' about a robe-wearing woman who takes care of her obese brother. Her life is drastically changed when she's raped by a supermarket (yes...a supermarket); 'Slothra,' the sad tale of a has-been Kaiju star; 'Silk Flower,' a bizarro take on Pinocchio with an oddly touching...more

I am a short story fanatic, and have been very disappointed by many of the short story anthologies I have read recently. I bought this one a while back, and just now sat down to read it. Once I started, I was unable to stop.

This book has stories in it for just about everyone who is interested in type of fiction. Even if they aren't when they start, I think this book would be able to hook even some of the most reluctant readers. I will definitely be looking for more work from this author.

There a...more

I have a friend who is really into art. He sees things in a painting that I can't begin to fathom. My responses to some of the work he has shown me over the years makes him chuckle. Hey, a single black dot in the center of an eight-foot canvass is not art. That is just my opinion. I believe I just finished the book that would be the equivalent.

A Hollow Cube Is A Lonely Space is a collection of some very off-the-wall shorts. I found some to be VERY amusing. Naturally, I didn't love all of them, b...more

ID SAYS:
Hello?! Is anybody out there?!! Nobody??! Fuck, that's too bad. Because there's a whole assortment of Weirdos in here.

We've got plenty of entertainment, a chimp with a beautiful singing voice and a man who's head tells some great jokes. There's even a whole class reunion taking place, but I wouldn't get too close to that former student wearing a coat made of skin.

You're hungry you say? No worries. There's a clementine here eagerly awaiting for someone to devour her. Looking for more opti...more

What the world needs now.. is more strange fiction! Thank goodness for Rose O'Keefe and her "New Bizarro Author Series", which sort of equates to the shallow end of a really long, really deep, really freaky pool... It's the perfect, low risk way for a publisher - and curious reader - to dip their toes in the murky waters of debut bizarro fiction without having to take the f...more

I've never fully grasped exactly what bizarro fiction is or isn't, what separates bizarro fiction from other weird fiction, but for bizarro fiction I found these stories to be extremely approachable. I enjoy the absurdity of what people often tell me is bizarro fiction, but I often am unable to follow the story. That is not the case with this particular book. Mind you, I don't mean that these stories aren't absurd, because they definitely are. I just mean that for bizarro fiction, I can actually...more

An entertaining collection of bizarro "fables" and an impressive authorial debut. Highlights for me include the stories "Matilda Goes Shopping," "Silk Flower," and "The (Not Quite) Corpse and the Stork." The latter story--in which a particularly knowledgeable stork gives lessons on life and the human condition to an almost-dead person whose partially eaten brain can't quite recall what it's like to be alive and human--might be my favorite of the lot.

A collection of strange, literary bizarro short stories that are surprisingly sweet, melancholy, thoughtful, and wonderfully well-written. They are short, some flash fiction length, and quite good.
