It's been three years since the last harvest, and the lepers are preparing once again to wage war on the mannequins for spare parts-prosthetic limbs they need to rebuild themselves. Jaundice (a female mannequin) and Quall (a male leper) have fallen in love in the midst of this war, forcing them to confront and redefine the nature of loyalty and betrayal. An absurd and trag ...more

The mannequins and the lepers are at war. It's too bad Quall, a leper, has fallen in love with Jaundice, a mannequin. Can their love conquer all or will they be destroyed?

Yeah, I may be risking my man card on this but my favorite bizarro stories seem to be the love stories. This one is a bizarro retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Only Romeo is a leper and Juliet is a mannequin.

Eric Beeny's writing is quite good, very good, in fact, considering this is his first novel. The story flowed very naturally

Do you like The Road?
The Road?
Yes, that post-apocalyptic book -
Hold on, you used too many syllables ...
Book about death and carrying on.
Relevant?
This one is written in the same style.

Yes.
Really?
Well, almost. I mean, he does use quotation marks. And there is an actual arc here, characters do grow (or fall apart or both). So in that way it's better. But really, it's the same.
Huh.

Do you like Romeo and Juliet?
Wait, what?
Shakespeare's play about -
I know what you're talking about. Just, why? I mea

Lepers and Mannequin is a love story between Quall, a leper, and Jaundice, a mannequin. Set against the backdrop of a war between the lepers and mannequins, this book is dark and funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming. It’s also an examination of our relationships with our bodies, what it means to be human and how we relate with “the other.”

Of course, as part of the New Bizarro Author Series, this book is also great Bizarro, with eye-grabbing images, mind-bending ideas, strange events and pure en

ID SAYS:
Well tear off my arm and call me a fucking nubby! There's a war going on, but it ain't about oil. Oh hell no, there's something more important on the minds of the lepers, and it's BODY PARTS. Who's got all the parts? The mankins do.

You know, mankins! Normally, they're hanging out in clothing stores modelling the latest fashions, but these ones spend their days migrating from lodge to lodge in an effort to stay one step ahead of their decaying hunters.

Lepers think mankins should be subser

A romance set against a backdrop of war between two societies totally dependent upon one another for meaning... sounds like an allegory if ever I read one.

Jaundice, a mannequin, and Quall, a leper, have an illicit relationship. Told from both perspectives, the plot precipitates nicely, keeping you turning the page to find out the next bit of information.

Well written prose, strange characters, believable dialogue. The book ticks all the right boxes. In parts funny and in others tragic, the story
