When I received this book in turn for an honest review, I wasn't sure it was going to captivate me, since I was unfamiliar with the European histories of this era. Having already read The Welsh Healer by this author and thoroughly enjoying that initial ride, though, one day I gave El Rey a shot and I'm so happy I did.

After finishing El Rey, I felt emotionally richer for reading it, because captivate me it did! Though I posessed no historical background regarding Iberia or Portugal, I found mysel...more

By the time I had reached the middle of this book, I was sure it would be one of the few 5***** I have read. Sumptuously beautiful, fascinating characters, and a love which surpassed all time.
There were times I wanted to scream, cry, kick the table and all other reactions, so heartwrenching was this story of the love between two people who seemed to have every obstacle in their path. it shows the good side and bad side of the characters, has delightful animals, a beautiful Arabian horse which wa...more

I won this Kindle edition in a giveaway. Wow! Where to begin. Never have I been so moved by a work of fiction as this one. Happiness, anger, frustration, sadness, hope, excitement. These are just a few of the emotions that I experienced while reading this book. I was so deeply submersed in this story I often had to take a deep breath because I was barely breathing. Yes, this story left me breathless. When I was nearing the end I was experiencing those feelings that readers get when they don't wa...more

I want to start this review out with these words: do not overlook this book because it’s a self-published eBook, or because the cover design doesn’t feature beautiful women in period dress. Do not overlook it because the title is foreign, or because it’s not another Tudor, Borgia or Marie Antoinette retelling. If you like endearing characters and finding out their histories, you will love this story—as I did.

In a genre saturated with settings in England, France and Italy, Ginger Myrick presents...more

It is hard to know how to put into words just how wonderful a book this is. Ginger Myrick has created a perfect book of historical romance. That is the genre yet typing that makes it sound trivial. Trivial is something this book is not. There is history perfectly related through the wonderful characters Ginger has imagined and brought to life. The way each of their stories are told took me back to my own life experiences and reignited desires, fond memories, sad times and how overwhelming our ow...more

I really, really enjoyed this story. Loved the characters, loved the plot twists and turns, loved the formatting of the e-book, loved getting a glimpse of 16th century Spain. Several months ago I won a copy from the author and since it’s a long story I waited until I had an e-reader to read it on. I shouldn’t have waited, it’s a great book. (Though my eyes are probably grateful I didn’t read it on a computer screen…)

This was definitely a book I could not read in one sitting, which was very enjoy...more

I think that this book is fabulous! My friend and I overheard a conversation at the airport with two people discussing the book and asked for the title. After reading the sample I downloaded the book and found it difficult to put the book down. What an extraordinary novel! I cannot tell you how many emotions it touched, I laughed out loud, I cried, and I kept thinking about the characters as if they were real. Ginger, I hope you finish your next book soon....and you can count one buying that one...more

Often when I read a book that moves me emotionally I'm left feeling inarticulate and struggle to write a review. This book is having that effect on me. From the beginning I was honestly anticipating a really good story and it has lived up to this. The setting in Portugal and Spain was an instant attraction and as the story developed it surprised me in many ways. The author truly focused on Estevao and Inez. You do get a insight to the historical times but walk away with the feeling of a love sto...more

El Rey is a deeply emotional tale that sweeps you into the depths of love one often does not experience. Myrick's characters will touch you to the core. She gives you an enriched story of endearing love that never ends and captures the essence of the human heart.

This story is set in 16th century Portugal and Spain. It is much more than a love story. It's also a time of the plague, war and the Spainsh Inquistion.

What I admire most is the characters resilience and resolve to withstand the tragic...more

I rarely give a 5 star review, but El Rey is deserving of it. This is the sweeping saga of the romance of Inez Garcia and El Rey, nephew of the King of Portugal in 16th century Portugal and Spain. Interwoven into the story are four stories of those close to Inez and how they fit into her story. It begins with Inez as an elderly women telling the story of her life and love to her great-granddaughter. From the beginning, I knew that I would love this book. The author's description and imagery are...more

The 'flavor and feel' of El Rey reminded me of a hybrid cross of Thorn Birds and Like Water For Chocolate, and yet was sweetly wrought. Sweeping and exotic in an interesting period of history. If you enjoy epic, historical sweet romance, this book is for you.

This is an historical romance set in Portugal in the late 1400s and early 1500s. It is fairly well written, and I actually enjoyed reading it, but it lacks much complexity and does not have quite as much historical detail as I generally like to encounter in historical fiction.
