Defying the Odds was the perfect book to start off the New Year!

I thoroughly enjoyed this emotional, endearing, fun, and heartfelt story. The cast of characters were multidimensional, engaging, and fantastically quirky. The hero and heroine were adorkable! Icouldn't seem to get enough of their fun dialogue and sizzling HOT chemistry. I'm definitelylooking forward to the next addition to this series.

I'm keeping this short because there are already so many awesome reviews out there.

Defying the Odds is the first book in the Battered Hearts series and a very, very sweet story. In fact, it's uncommonly sweet given that it's also an extremely hot tale, and readers used to edgier erotica might miss that in with this story.

That said, I adored Clay and Melody and loved watching their relationship grow. Wyatt and Jules were also great, in an annoying family members kind of way.

Defying the Odds made me all-kinds of happy! Some may find Melody's openness about being on-the-run unrealistic, but I found it incredibly smart. She alerts the police, and those around her, of what's going on. It takes a lot of courage to do that when the responses to domestic violence can be less than ideal. She pushes herself to overcome her fears. And when she has panic attacks, she's quick to realize what caused them. In a nutshell, Melody aches to be "normal" and is striving for that place even while running from a monster.

Clay is a dream. Really. He's the reigning UFC heavyweight champion known as Powerhouse. He is intimidating, gruff, and not without his own commitment issues. It was cute watching him become so smitten with her. Neither of them want to fight what's between them, and Clay, in particular, vows not to let the past be an issue with Melody.

The romance is sweet, the chemistry is sizzling, but the story isn't overrun with a bunch of unneeded hot-and-heaviness. Clay has magic fingers *sigh*, a talented mouth *double-sigh*, and a smokin'-hot way with words during sex...

"Go ahead." Clay's voice turned low and gravelly with sex. "Use it; fuck it. It belongs to you; own it."

Melody's gaze became molten, the pink sheen of morning painting itself over her flushed skin. She licked her lips, looking awed. "Is that true?"

"Yes," he assured her without hesitation. "I thought I was broken too, that I'd never trust women, but I had it all wrong. I wasn't broken at all. I was just waiting for you. It's always been yours; even before we met, it belonged to you."

Clay wasn't real sure if they were talking about his heart or his cock, but it didn't seem to matter.

Now, if that doesn't make you want to read this book, I don't know what will. The man is luscious!

Clay's friends, Wyatt and Jules, are pretty comical. I hope they get their own books!(less)

Another one to my LOVVIT shelf. I loved everything about this book. The tender Hero, the down-on-her-luck heroine, the blabber mouth wing-man and most definitely the HOT smexings.

All were very yummy and my personal favourite was the shower sex. I cannot gush enough how scorching that was. Absolutely yummy!

★★★★✩ Sweet and loaded with charm! This is a fast read, but that doesn’t make it any less H.O.T. Kudos to this “new-2-me-author” for making me care about these believable people in a relatively short amount of time. I’ll definitely be reading more of this author’s work.

Oh my, oh my, oh my I think I fell in love with this book from the second that Clay started to pretty much stalk Melody. I know, I’m an odd ball but he was just so darned cute. Clay was so clearly damaged that he just didn’t know how to deal with other people. In fact, between him, Jules and Wyatt, they could have covered the spectrum of emotional problems. They were all each other had and all each other needed. Well, until Clay meets Melody. He is so persistent in his affections but it never quite crosses the line to becoming too much. He just turns up at her work every-night, gets to know her and managed to wheedle his way into her heart the long way round. Having the people skills of a rock (and the physique :D) he doesn’t really know how to court her so it’s all very much a “suck it and see” kind of approach. Some of it really made me smile. Melody is attracted to him, but unwilling to get involved. Once he starts to become someone she can rely on, she starts to accept her attraction towards him and lets him in.

The smexing between them is unfricking believable…it’s so raw and hot that it blew me away. It also contains some of the most awesome lines I’ve ever read in smut. Clay has never done a relationship before, never said all the words that we all say and gained the scars to prove them false. He is so honest, so raw, that even the dirtiest of lines become somewhat romantic;

“”Go ahead.” Clay’s voice turned low and gravelly with sex. “Use it; fuck it. It belongs to you; own it””

It made for some seriously erotic scenes and some seriously clammy palm inducing sex.

As you can tell, I now have a soft spot for Clay but Melody was an awesome character too. The thing I liked the most was that she recognised that just because the ex was an abusive idiot, doesn’t mean that all men are. Clay is a physically imposing, blunt, socially impotent man but she isn’t afraid of him; the reason that she doesn’t want to get involved is she doesn’t want to unload her baggage on him. It is also her problems that look to be the reason that they may not survive the duration; her mental scars are deep and on-going. There are some truly heart stopping moments towards the later stages of this book….If it’d been a film, there would have been a pillow over my face.

A fabulous smutty book which I hope evolves into a fantastically smutty series. The complete lack of censorship that Clay imposes on his feelings made for a fantastically intense and erotic tale. There are some more spicy scenes, but we all know I’m a perv so I’m OK with it. He is DEFINITELY part of my book hottie harem (less)

It’s the first story I’ve read with a hero that’s an Ultimate Fighting Champion. He’s known worldwide, but Melody doesn’t have a clue as to who Clay is the night she buys him a slice a pie at the diner she’s working in. It’s easy to say it’s love at first sight for these two.

Melody is running from an abusive ex-husband. She left with the clothes on her back and is working double shifts at the diner to pay for her bills and save enough money in case she needs to run again. You’d think seeing a big fighter like Clay would have her running the other direction, but she felt their connection right away and even with all she’d been through, she knew letting Clay in was the right thing to do. Clay has a strong need to help and protect her and I loved that while he might look physically imposing, he really has a huge heart and Melody is the first and only woman to ever make him look forward to a future with somebody.

He nodded, not trusting himself to speak as he stared at Melody curled up in his arms, having never seen her without glasses on. It made her look younger, more innocent. He reached over and caressed her cheeks, flushed pink from the cold. The urge to kiss her was overwhelming.

Melody made the decision for both of them as her hands slid from beneath Clay’s shirt to the back of his neck. She tugged him down at the same time she leaned up and pressed her lips against his. The kiss was chaste, soft, and sweet like Melody.

Clay was lost.

Both of these people have pasts that weren’t kind to them. Clay didn’t grow up with a loving family, but he found family in his two best friends, siblings, Wyatt and Jules, and these three have been all each other had for years. They’re a tight knit group, but also a group that’s maybe a little hard, especially when it comes to emotions. Bringing Melody into their trio is only the beginning of watching these people start to live and love.

Ah, angst – these two people bring it early on! Melody gets wind that her ex may know where she’s living and instead of dragging Clay into her drama, she pulls back which makes them both miserable. It goes without saying that the separation doesn’t last long and it ends up bringing Melody to one of Clay’s fights. I did not want to read a detailed account of this man fighting in his sport. I thought the author walked a nice line of giving us just enough detail to get across how tough and brutal this sport is, but it never crossed into territory that had me covering my eyes as I read. The ex-husband’s storyline does come to a conclusion at the end, and while I thought the inclusion the ex- played a huge role in explaining Melody, her past and what she’s recovering from, I didn’t necessarily care that his story was brought into the present. But it’s a really small detail that in no way took away from the love story that I was completely invested in. If you’re looking for a sweet, tender, and naughty at times romance, give this one a read. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book in the series and am looking forward to seeing Jules get her chance at love next.(less)

A sweet read with no pretense or melodrama... it was so nice to get back to basics. And by basics I mean basics.

Clay and Melody meet, they find themselves attracted to each other, they become friendly, they communicate how they feel to one another, any baggage is discussed like adults and their love is so sweet, so pure, it made me purr like a kitten.

It's actually a sweet story (well-thought out, I expected it to be darker based on the only other book I have read by the author Beyond Eden ) and under normal circumstances I would have been raving about it but I am currently so enamored with M/M that anything outside of that just isn't keeping me engaged.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning! It was probably because guys with big muscles that are really tall.... Yep vagina gone.

Clay:
33. Inky black hair. Six foot five. 260lbs of muscle. Dark eyes. Big hands. Can kick anyone's ass...

This book has a good blend of story, and hot, hot, hot sex. I have been saying this a lot, but I was surprised on how much I enjoyed it. I am not saying it was the best thing I ever read, no it was just really, really hot at times. So it does fall in the evil category that most romance novels fall in, the meet, fuck, fight, fall in love, though the author keeps you entertained.
So this is a fun read, if you are looking for something easy, and quick this might be a book for you.
