In Godsmacked, Paul Cicchini tries to be the Christian Douglas Adams. As a big fan of the Hitchhiker's Trilogy of Five, I really wanted this book to work. Unfortunately, while the plot could have worked, theological problems means that there's no way I can reccomend this book.

Godsmacked follows Charlie, an all-round nice guy (and good-looking to book), who somehow cannot get a girl. Through an extremely weird event, he ends up on Mount Olympus, where he makes friends with Heracles/Hercules, and...more

This is a Bookpleasures.com review
This concise, humorous, book is absolutely splattered with modern cultural references, and amusing interpretations of the gods of Classical Greece, which can’t help but connect with most inhabitants of the English speaking world. It is hard to go through many lines without finding oneself painting pictures, with all Cicchini’s quick-fire, skimming, mentions. Let me say upfront that this author is right up my alley, from his subject matter to his writing style. He is up there with Pratchett, Christopher Moore, and Douglas Adams. This is why I give the three 'books' in the Godsmacked series 5 stars.

However...

What he has done is take about 1/2 to 3/4s of a great book and is selling that bit as three individual books. I downloaded one for free from Amazon, then found it was the 3rd in a series. I bought the first two then for around 5usd each. Imagine h...more

Charlie is an ordinary type B personality dull guy - nice, but not appreciating or enjoying life. Until he was sucked into a temporal vortex and landed on Heracles on Mount Olympus in outer space. Charlie and Herc become friends and Herc takes Charlie to many of the gods to try to get someone to help Charlie get back to earth. Each god is either unwilling, unable or hampered from helping them and as he tries to help Charlie, Herc grows in strength and size. This is a funny take on Greek mytholog...more

"Godsmacked" by Paul Cicchini is one part Douglas Adams one part Monty Python with a touch of Joseph Campbell sprinkled into the mix. That’s the recipe for a fun read.

I recommend that you track down a copy and enjoy; but be warned, the Gods are capricious.
