I really enjoyed Breaking the Rules, it was such a sweet story.
Mattie is on the run, all she ever wanted in her life was a family so she let herself get engaged to a man she thought was good but found out he wasn't and after witnessing a murder she left. Her time as a foster child and her foster brother taught her survival.

Zeke Shephard is a man with scars both physical and emotional, his father was abusive and he spent his life saving his sisters, he made a life for himself when a vengeful woma...more

Once in a while, you are lucky enough to come across a novel that calls to you, that feeds your senses and tantalizes you, that just makes you wish that the magic would continue. Breaking the Rules by Barbara Samuel was a novel I got off of Amazon for free from the bestselling lists for Kindle books. And boy, was I blown away with the story that unfolded, getting myself completely tangled up in the story that was just sheer magic to experience.

A wonderfully easy story to read - a good mixture of warmth, tenderness, and tension-ridden sexiness. I liked Mattie and I adored Zeke, and they were fabulous together. My only complaint is that the characters resolved their hang-ups a bit too easily after much drama and angst threatened to keep them apart. Definitely worth the read if you're in the mood for a category 90's contemporary romance in the Rockies, with a little suspense thrown in.

This is falling into my new "three star rating" which basically means I enjoyed the story well enough, but it was a tad predictable and a tad too short. I have read this slew of "three starr-ers" as they have all been free. The author then cleverly puts in an excerpt from another book they have written, and in this case it worked, and I also ordered, and paid, for another book by this author. But, unfortunately, the lack of true substance keeps me from continuing.

Cute story.

I enjoyed reading this book it was very interesting. In fact I enjoyed it so much I read it twice. This is first book I have read of Barbara Samuel. I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

Rugged, hard-edged Zeke doesn't get involved--but there's something about Mattie's courage that catches his sympathy. When the thugs who want to silence Mattie forever show up, Zeke steps in and takes her to his own private hide away, where the two must decide if the link between them i...more

I really, really enjoyed the story of Mattie and Zeke. Both of them had been horribly wounded in their youth, and still had obvious scars. Now Mattie, or Miss Mary,as Zeke called her, was on the run after witnessing a triple murder. Luckily Zeke was willing to help her hide out in his wilderness cabin. Naturally they fall in love, and the process was one of the most beautifully written stories I have read in a LONG time. Naturally, true love does not run smooth, but it prevails in the end. And so...more

What a pleasant surprise this book was. I couldn't remember why I had downloaded it, and usually expect "romance" books to be trash, but this one has a real story, with real characters and real situations. There's action drama with fighting, very realistically done, and only a tiny bit of soft porn - really you could hardly call it porn, and plenty of warning is given by the writer that things are getting explicit, so it is easy to skip those bits.

The characters were well drawn and believable, a...more

A woman on the run... When Zeke Shephard met Mattie O'Neal, the new waitress in town, he knew she was running from something. He never before was attracted to good girls, so why couldn't he leave her alone?...

It was ok, but somehow I didn't really like the main caracters (Zeke's: "Don't fall for me - I will never settle down"-routine just got plain on my nerves and Mattie was nice but boring personalitywise) so the book just dragged on and on without being very exciting. This author can do so mu...more

This was a most enjoyable little romance. It wasn't exactly "contemporary" since some things in there were rather dated, so it is apparently an older book re-published without up-dating. It did not have a very original plot but did have the fine writing, rich character development, and heart and soul that I have come to associate with Samuel novels. It also did not drag or get boring because she had the good sense to make the novel short and sweet, taking place over a very brief time span.

It was a cute story. I did not feel that it dragged. A little disappointed with the ending. I thought it ended quickly. I actually thought my Kindle was 'missing' some pages. I could not believe it just ended like that without the author giving us some insight as to how the character were doing after 1 year or 2 years. I still enjoyed the book.

3.5 rounded up. As a Barbara ONeil/Samuel fan, this book didn't disappoint. She provides romance with the brutality of life, bringing to light difficult topics - in this case child abuse and domestic abuse/murderer. Two broken people find each other and heal together. Well written, great characters.

H/h: Zeke/Maddie
Where: Arizona & Colorado
What:
Maddie, lonely orphan raised in foster homes. Zeke, abused as a child, broken as an adult. This book was not one of my favorites, I never felt connected to the characters though I was hoping for an HEA for them. Not a lot to say.

I really enjoyed this romance/suspense novel. Mattie is on the run after witnessing a murder. Zeke is the strong, sexy guy there to protect her and protect his heart. He has some serious baggage from his past that she helps him work through. Love the descriptions of the scenery.

This book surprised me. I thought it was going to be your run of the mill, sex every other page romance. Instead, I was pleasently surprised. Both main characters were very flawed, in their own ways, and very realistic. The ending seemed a bit rushed but it went perfectly with the book.
Judy Wise
This was a nice story about two people running from trouble and teaming up together to hide.
It was slow paced in some parts and then took off and ran in some parts. Altogether I am glad
that I stuck with it because it was a good read. I liked it

I liked this book. A nice story. The only thing I didn't care for was I didn't buy into the long-haired man that smokes as being sexy. So in my mind I changed him so I could enjoy the images that played out in my head. :)
Rita
I thought the book was good. But the cover would mislead you into believing it a teen book. They were much older than the cover couple. I like my covers to match the characters. Overall the book was good.

Another free book on the Kindle I got. I'm not really into romance novels and this one had parts that reminded me of romance novels. I really enjoyed the characters though.

Two-haiku review:

Witness tries to hide
Meets bad boy who won't commit
Will he rescue her?

Liked both characters
Very emotional tale
Loved the HEA
Rachel
This was your basic damaged boy meets damaged girl - they fall in love and live happily ever after (with some shoot-outs and mad motorcycle chases thrown in.)
Sarah
Don't read this if you want more than a shallow fun read. But that was exactly what I was going for. Enjoyable :) I wouldn't re-read it though.
Melissa Boyer
Loved the story and the characters!! As with all of her books, I love the locations she takes me to with her amazing descriptions.

“Yesterday in the restaurant, she’d seen his sex appeal and roughness. At her house, she’d seen his danger. This morning, at the river, she’d seen his beauty and teasing, and again that danger.
Of all of them, the tenderness she saw now was the most compelling. And terrifying.”

“His mouth. It touched hers lightly, just touched at first. And it seemed every nerve in her body suddenly rushed toward her mouth to join the explosion of sensation his lips brought. He moved his head and his mouth slid one way, then the other, and his fingers tightened around her neck, pulling her closer.” 1 likes
