Nathan Cameron is the prototypical all-american kid, through sports, popularity, and girls. Life has certainly been a sweet ride for this boy of many colors, whose personality allows him to manipulate just about anyone he meets. For Nathan, however, anytime things begin to feel boringly static or beyond his control, he packs up and moves somewhere new, and as Music Made By Bears begins, he finds himself in a peculiar town where his refined manipulation skills can be used with simple ease and to great self-serving effect.

Dalton Hughes is an unpopular reject who sets out on an adventure that causes him to question every level of life's aching depths. Having an obsession with something he read as a kid, as well as its author, he decides to leave his home in order to search for the writer who changed his life—a world-weary hermit who lives in a house hidden deep in the woods, a man who proves to be no easy find.

Both Nathan and Dalton are the newest arrivals in the small town of Manta, which is more of a piece of land taken over by a religious group than it is an actual town. The two newcomers, in their early twenties, find themselves looking at an eerie mirror image upon meeting. Temporally together, but guided by vastly different philosophies, they make their way into the heart of a town dominated by a small but deeply devoted religious sect, a group that opted to live in Manta's thick forests in order to establish an unspoiled community of believers. ("The seclusion is self-inflicted, and outsiders are as unwelcome as disease.")

Daniel Donatelli's literary debut has profound meaning that goes beyond the plot, and interpretation is not obvious but is well worth the effort.
