Two years ago, blacksmith Ivy, desperate to flee London, purchased her overseas passage by agreeing to spend the voyage in the bed of the pirate captain, Mad Machen. Saved at the last minute by his rival, Ivy scraped out a new life in Fool’s Cove…until Mad Machen finds her, forces her to accept a job that will create a monster, and reminds her that she still owes him the p...more

Hello, my name is Elizabeth, and I'm a fangirl.

I'm a squee-ing, freaking fan girl of Meljean Brook's Iron Seas* series and it is getting out of control. I have a problem. I have a serious problem if I'm pretty much willing to read anything that she publishes about these characters or this world she's created, even if it's in Burning Up (this novella) or, worse, Wild & Steamy (the short back story about Mina's assistant). It's kind of like the people who have read every, single note, letter,...more

It's been a couple of years since the people of Britain were able to liberate themselves from the Horde, who controlled their bodies for years through nanoagents in their blood. Ivy Blacksmith had been one of their slaves, so she's terrified when she wakes one night unable to move, just as when her body was controlled by the Horde, while men search the room where she sleeps.

When they leave and she can move again, Ivy knows she needs to leave London as fast as possible. She has barely any money,...more

It's (a) an adventure on the high seas! No, it's (b) a kidnapped by pirates romance! No, (c) it's Shark Week goes Steampunk! Well, whatever it is, it's awesome. And (d) it has kraken!

Please note that I didn't actually get the audio version, but it's the only story I read in Burning Up so I'm pretending I acquired a stand alone. Plus now all the cover pics for the series will look the same.

(a) The author again dips into her Iron Seas world from a very different angle. More serious than the Indian...more

This is a novella, and a pretty complete story despite the length. The world is a very original, steampunk London with some historical references but an undefined time frame. The characters were interesting and had as much depth as time would allow. This is a romance story, make no mistake. That being said- Laurel K Hamilton can eat her heart out. I listened to the audio version of this on my iPod, which I plug into my car. Some of the steamier scenes were so very steamy, that I turned the volum...more

Solid 5 stars
Although this was the first story released in the Irons Seas series it is the last one I read (of what has been published so far). Ivy and Mad Machen are easily my favorite pairing of characters in the series to date.

I totally adore Ivy with all her spunky determination, talent, and quick wit. Mad Machen in his earnest pursuit of the one that got away is much more likable than the possessive, uber-alpha male thing the Iron Duke had going at the beginning of that story but not as......more

There’s a lot of so-called “Steampunk Romance” floating around out there, much of which is typical historical romance with a dash of clockwork and a sprinkling of automatons, served with an airship for dessert. That is NOT the case in Here There Be Monsters.

I downloaded this audiobook from the library on a whim – I’d never heard of the author (shame on me!) and just happened to catch the description as I was searching for something to listen to while I baked cookies. BEST ACCIDENT EVER! While th...more

It was not what I expected. Heroine was plain crazy - panicking and hastily leaving country, and tricking a famous pirate, then hiding from him for two years. One moment she is terrified by him, the next moment laughing, and then again terrified o_O And money game - she gives him money for not sleeping with her, knowing full well that she doesn't have enough for their trip..would it not be sensible just to give in and save her money for dire times? And then he gives her money for kisses. Gah! I...more

prequel to the Iron Duke. I loved the characters and the world-building. Was a bit confused at times, but I didn't seem to mind ;P

review from Burning Up where this novella originally was published is here

Read this in the 2010 ANTH "Burning Up". First time reading steampunk and immediately got hooked on the Iron Seas series. Meljean Brook is a fantastic (and dependable) author!

Mad Machen was looking for a little mad in his woman. Ivy Blacksmith turned out to be a little more mad than he could have every guessed. In a time where nanos are in most if not all. Courting is not a real concept for everyone. And sex means a baby automatically. How ever will they get around that.

This has all put me in the mind frame to learn more. I will be getting me more of the Iron Seas series.

Awesome story set in Meljean Brook's steampunk series the Iron Seas. It's a side story of two characters who are referenced in some of the other books in the series. Loved the relationship between the two main characters, and it makes me want to reread the other books in the series, to see how the fit into the other stories.

This is just fabulous- each page kept me wanting more! It's dark, interesting and sexy - i couldn't stop! After reading both short stories that are set before the Iron Duke in this series I am all anticipation for the book! And I'm looking forward to getting another dose of Brooks amazing writing

Read this with other short stories - this would not have been book that I would have normally picked ... But I loved it and will read more - there is also a cheat sheet that helps maps and history if you search under the author - I will print this out before I read more in this series.

3.7 So, I have read this short story in the Anthology Burning Up before and I want to mark it now before I read it a third time. It was good enough to sidetrack me to read the next Iron Seas book before checking to see if I read the others in this Anthology.

Whoever designed Meljean Brook's book covers don't do her amazing stories justice. Scrap that--whoever thought naked, ripped torsos would make great covers should be shot, hung over the side of Mad Machen's ship and fed to the kraken and megalodons. Slowly.

Loved this novella, but it was a bit too short. I would have liked to have had additional scenes with the mechanical kraken and a heady dose of back at you for Lady Corsair courtesy of Ivy Blacksmith.

Read it in Burning Up antho.

One of my fav romances EVER.

The scene in the bar is one of the best scenes in a romance I've ever read.

Read this one in the 'Burning Up' anthology. I have never read a ss before that made me so anxious to read the series. Great little story.

Just one fault with this story set before the Iron duke, it's too short. So wanted to know more about Mad Madchen, Barker and the crew of the Vesuvius.
Caroline The HEA Lover
It was awesome! Both the story and the narration of the Audiobook. I'm so happy with it. Just awesome!

Loved Ivy! Loved Eben! Loved the peek at Yasmeen! I'm pretty sure I've fallen hard for this world.
Merideth

fun sexy times.

I love this little story about Ivy Blacksmith and the pirate Mad Machen.
I read the main stories first and am filling in the time waiting for the next novel by catching up on the shorts. These characters apear briefly in the main novels and sparked an interest for me.
The short story is sweet and the ending brought a huge grin to my face.
Here there be monsters can be read before/after the first novel or on its own.
I love Meljeans steampunk world and look forward to more stories in the series....more
