It starts with girl meet NS who is hot as hell, the girl notices

(alpha male = hotness and girl = someone who totally needs the best sex of her life)
The guy has to live in her house, something to do with her dad.
Girl gets totally smashed after a fight with her dad.

Girl watches someone die & then her house gets broken into by bad guys
Cue gun fight in her bedroom

Then Kidnapping & then imprisonment
They get caged together so they play hide the salami

They get rescued, but more drama happens...more

Another great installment to this series!
Once again I could not be moved from my laptop.
I love Brawn he is such a sweetheart. There are a few tender moments in this one between Brawn & Becca that had me a little teary eyed. The suspense/drama, while again, not too deep still breathed life into this story. The ending had me laughing as well.

If you are following this series then I would recommend this read.
Although these books can be read as stand alones, I would advise you to read them all in...more

These books are certainly cute and entertaining in a fluffy mind-candy sort of way; but there’s nothing in them very deep, like say...a new story. After this many books in the series, there should be some kind of growth in the plotlines and writing, but it’s the same old stuff. This story was just a bit different, with the promise of a good plot; and was interesting during the small amount of time spent in the labs. However, as with all the books; if the author found some little hook she liked,...more These books are certainly cute and entertaining in a fluffy mind-candy sort of way; but there’s nothing in them very deep, like say...a new story. After this many books in the series, there should be some kind of growth in the plotlines and writing, but it’s the same old stuff. This story was just a bit different, with the promise of a good plot; and was interesting during the small amount of time spent in the labs. However, as with all the books; if the author found some little hook she liked, she repeated it endlessly. Not only are the same plot points and scenes rehashed countless times within a book, it’s now the same rehashes from book to book. Every book, numerous times – The physical and sexual differences between NS and humans, check; why NS don’t like to breed with human women, check; NS sexual habits, check; human women are weak, check; how the NS were drugged and forced to breed in the labs, check; how noble the NS are, check; the sex banter between the NS Hero and the human h, check; how NS really don’t like human females at all (yet this is the 5th book with a breed/human mating). Then there were the long, drawn-out scenes about nothing that went absolutely nowhere – those got old fast; as well as the sex talk and entire sections of déjà vu scenes in the book. These things were all wash, rinse, repeat. Dohner desperately needs to break away from these bad writing habits and give us something new and fresh. The basic stories are enjoyable, but the repetition is mind-numbing.

Entertaining story, but just not well-defined enough. First half was pretty good, second half incredibly repetitive and dragged out. (I liked when he found her in the exam room, tho). After the first two chapters set Becca up as a total trash-talking slut, in the rest of the book she was immature, silly, brainless, and a total Mary Sue. Brawn was a nice guy, humorous even; and I really liked him. He wasn't quite as naïve or interchangeable as some of the other NS. He certainly deserved better than what he got with Becca; and after 5 books into the series, the reader deserves a better story than this. Dohner completely changed Tim's character from the previous books, just to make him a character to fit her needs for this particular book. I hate when an author ruins a set character in a series to fit their current needs. That's just lazy writing. Becca hid from Brawn and wouldn't talk to him about her 'issue', just like in Slade; and all the worry throughout the book about how her dad would take her little 'issue' wrapped up with him patting Becca on her head and telling her he was fine with the 'issue'. Quick and easy. Just exactly like the end of Justice. The similarities to another authors work that had been toned down a bit the last couple of books was back full force in this one.

I've read three EC books lately; one great, this one so-so, and one I was barely able to finish. This series is a fun read, but desperately needs to grow and go in a fresh new direction. Dohner is an enjoyable writer and is quite capable of better than this.

**Reread, excellent story. Brawn is so delicious in this story, his blunt way of speaking and vulnerability when it comes to worrying if Becca will accept him makes your heart go flip flop.

This series seems to have a serious obsession with babies. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's kind of starting to bore me. I usually read historicals, and at least in those, there's a legitimate reason for wanting an heir right now. I'm being really generous by giving this book in the series 3 stars.

The beginning was really funny of Becca and her Dad fighting and how Brawn hears everything that Becca says. They get settled in the same house and retire for the evening and then it all goes to hell. Don't get me wrong I REALLY liked Brawn...and I loved how overprotective he was of Becca when they were held captive. I have read the first books of New Species and have to say that this and Justice are my least favorite and I am not going to read any more from the series.
I got really annoyed halfway through of the repetitive friction and misunderstandings between characters. (One of the reasons Valiant is my favorite, becouse it is all straight forward and out there.)
In Brawn, Brawn and Becca want to be together and even after they are ´safe´ even their own people keep them apart 'for thier own good'.

I think these books get better with every new release in the series. I am really glad I continued with the series. I liked Becca and Brawn's story. They definitely had an unconventional start to a relationship, but it was nice watching feelings develop under dire circumstances.

Brawn is easy to forget compared to the other characters.

I had to take a break from these series because Justices book felt like a lot of the same. I am glad I did because Brawn's book felt right, and new, and improved.
What I can't recall is more of him in the past books, I feel like I keep forgetting who he is and he will not leave a mark like the others characters did. Although the book was pretty decent.

This is one of my favorite series right now!

Laurann Dohner continues to “outshine” all other stars in the galaxy of sci-fi/romance novelist. One of my favorite writers, Ms. Dohner does not disappoint her followers but continues to grace the world with wonderful tales of steamy yet dramatic fiction!

When Brawn is added to the task-force who helps rescue lost New Species still being held prisoner, he becomes the first New Species to live outside of the confines of Homeland or Reservation. With the continual threat of hot-headed bigots and extremist protesting outside the gates demanding the New Species should be destroyed, I knew this scenario couldn't possibly lead to anything good.

Brawn finds himself sharing a house with Becca, the daughter of the leader of the task-force. Immediately there was an electrical attraction between these two, despite the fact Brawn has promised himself he wouldn't become involved with a human female. Before the two can even get a chance to get to know one another they are thrown into a horrific drama that forces them to rely on each other for survival. Brawn, being the strong, protective type, decides to protect Becca the best he can, while finding himself falling deeply for the fragile human. This saga gives us a glimpse into some of the abuse the New Species had to endure before they were set free from Mercile's prisons.

Laurann Dohner has struck gold with her New Species series! I've been following this series from the beginning and I recommend if you possibly can, read the series from the beginning. You'll receive a richer understanding and overall enjoyment. The characters are extremely well written and I couldn't help but be pulled into this compelling fictional reality. Ms Dohner paints for us a colorful picture of heated romance among conflict and struggle.

Brawn's story is extremely emotional and suspenseful! He's the ultimate sexy alpha male whom no one can help but love. His sense of courage, loyalty, protectiveness and compassion made this reader want to snatch up a New Species mate for herself. I love the fact that even though they are part animal DNA and part human, they have insecurities and flaws. The scenarios created in these stories definitely have the heat level of a fiery furnace. The secondary characters are wonderful and I found myself pulled into their lives as well.

I cannot say enough about this book and this series. If you have not experienced any of Laurann Dohner's works of written art yet, than I recommend rushing out and reading this series. You might just find yourself fantasizing about your own New Species mate!(less)

Having not read the previous books in the series, I admit I was a little lost at times, but not so much so that I couldn't enjoy the story.

The sex was incredible, with the primal intensity I'd expect from a story about men who were quite literally part animal. This is the story of Brawn (a New Species cat-mix) and Becca (a human), #5 in the series.

They meet when Brawn is assigned as the new liaison for the military rescue team that is headed by Becca's father. Brawn is sent to live with them to help him assimilate, but due to Becca's dad's high-handedness in trying to give him Becca's house and then her refusal to move out, they end up living together (he is in the guest room).

Not long after Brawn moves in, the house is attacked by nut-jobs working for the drug company who had imprisoned New Species and experimented on them for years before they were rescued. They are both captured and stuck in a cage because an insane doctor is still trying to run experiments (factions of the drug company still exist, there are still some New Species imprisoned, they are still experimenting, and they are still trying to recapture the ones who were freed, ie. they are not good people).

So, they capture Becca and Brawn (again with the abduction motif Ms. Dohner?) and the doctor thinks they are together (which they aren't at this point, they each just think the other is hot), which leads her to want to run...you guessed it...sex experiments on them (let's not pansy-foot around here...again with the rape motif? Really?). So poor Brawn is forced to "donate" to a cup and Becca is forced to help. What really gets me after that is they end up mating, while locked back in the cell, while under surveillance. Uh...I realize they are all trapped and scared and already attracted to each other, but hello? Anyone? Bueller?

They are finally rescued, and then Brawn is told Becca was traumatized and to wait for her to approach him and Becca is told Brawn doesn't want to see her. Messed up advise and orders from other people trying to interfere. So they don't see each other for 9 weeks, in which time Becca discovers she is preggo from their one encounter. Oops. She goes into hiding because she is afraid her dad would kill Brawn if he found out. I didn't really understand that. It was pretty much a BS excuse because she was still mad and hurt that he hadn't contacted her.

Becca ends up getting tracked by New Species when she tried to call their doctor to get pregnancy advise. They recover her (against her will) and take her back to their home to protect her. Brawn then finds out she is there, and pregnant, and flips out. Not because he is mad, but because he has missed her, wants to mate her and wants to protect her and the baby. Becca is pissed, he tries to win her over. What follows are a bunch of scenes of Brawn trying to convince her to be his.

I actually liked the second half of the book a lot better. It was pretty funny and also really sweet in some parts. For instance, when Becca is trying to argue with Brawn he just tells her to "open her mouth" and then he kisses the living daylights out of her, that made me laugh. When Brawn is talking to the baby bump, that is really sweet. It takes a while for them to work things out, but when they finally do, they are very cute together. :)(less)

While I have really enjoyed this series this story set my teeth on edge. I think it is because Rebecca "Becca" was so unwilling to trust anyone when she found out she was pregnant with a New Species baby. If she really loved the child she would have found a way to get to the New Species doctor. I also have a hard time with people in stories not talking to each other. They turn to each other for comfort and support, not knowing when or if they'll ever get out of there.

Finally, the rescue team comes and Brawn and Becca get split up in the melee of things. Becca is being taken to be checked out medically to make sure everything is alright with her, but Brawn stays behind to answer questions. By the time Brawn makes it to the medical facility, he's told that Becca has gone back home and doesn't want to speak with him. Becca on the other hand is waiting for him to show up or call, but he never does. There are a lot of things leading up to the miscommunication and misunderstanding between these two, but can they figure out where they went wrong on their own?

I loved this book. Everyone of Mrs. Dohner's books are wonderful. Each one has their own story, but still overlaps into the others to keep you up-to-date. She has the perfect knack for writing stories that have interesting plot lines, yet steamy sex to keep it hot, and deep emotions to keep us rooting for the couple! Some people have complained about the heroine being whiny, but put in her predicament with her emotions full force, I would probably be the same. Not every character can be perfect, their flaws are what makes them real making us, the readers, able to relate to them more fully.

With that being said, great job Laurann! And definetly keep up with the books, I know you have a fan for life in me! (less)

They had only met the day before they were captured, but they were very attracted to each other. During the experiments, and all the time they spent together locked in the same cage, they grew very close, being each other's only source of comfort. What was being done to them was barbaric, but they were still really sweet. I loved Brawn, he was a bit more laid back than the others. A bit of a sense of humour (although not as much as Tiger) and he was really sweet. I really got them as a couple, and I loved how Becca was described. She was always trying to point out to Brawn that she was in bad shape or slightly overweight, but he just thought she was beautiful. She was the first human mate to a NS who was not described as tiny. She isnt as big and sturdy as the NS females, but she can handle Brawn.

What I didnt enjoy so much was the second half of the book, after they were rescued. I much prefer when outside forces get between a couple, usually paranormal or sci-fi forces, not human miscommunication and deception. That just reminds me too much of contemporary romance, which I am not really a fan of. Once they were rescued, someone lied to them in order to try to keep them apart, and it led to a lot of heartache. I really didnt enjoy all the fighting that followed, and all the anger. Brawn wasnt so sweet anymore. He was always angry and although I know he would never hurt Becca, he was acting pretty scary and I am surprised she wasnt turned off by it more. I didnt enjoy the smutty parts as much either, because it was always out of anger. They still turned each other on, even though they werent getting along any more and it just wasnt as enjoyable when the connection between them was struggling. I still think their first time together was the most touching, even if it was in a cage with perverts watching. But I am really happy for them and it was still enjoyable over all. And this is totally one of the hottest covers in the series!(less)

Okay I have mixed feeling about this one to be perfectly honest. The only reason why I am giving it 4 stars is because I really really loved Brawn. He was a great guy. His mate however Becca was another matter. In the beginning of the story she was painted as an immature, crazy person, with a substance abuse problem.
