Another top-notch thriller from Robert Dugoni. Just when you think nothing worse can happen to David Sloane, Dugoni turns up the heat again.

This time, Sloane and his stepson Jake head into the backwoods of Northern California for some father-son time. Sloane hopes he can find a way to connect with Jake, who's spiraling into more and more trouble, before it's too late. They are joining Sloane's old friend, detective Tom Molia (The Jury Master), and his son TJ. But Jake quickly finds a way to get...more

I picked up Robert Dugoni's debut novel The Jury Master back in 2006. I quite enjoyed it, but for some unknown reason, I hadn't read another of his books until I picked up his latest - The Conviction. (I know I've missed a lot of good reads in between.)

Lawyer David Sloane is Dugoni's recurring character. He's known as 'the lawyer who does not lose'. In the courtroom maybe, but in his personal life Sloane has suffered some losses. His partner Tina was brutally murdered - in front of her son Jake....more

David Sloane is having some issues with his step son, Jake. Sloane's friend, Tom Molina suggests that Sloane, Jake, Molina and his son, T.J. all get away for a guys weekend. Things go well until Jake and T.J. are arrested, tried and sentenced all by Judge Earl Boykin. Judge Boykin is a man not to be messed with.

Jake and T.J. have been sent to Fresh Start, a jevenile facility. Only the facility is more like a boot camp and the guards like to break down the children because they can. Sloane and M...more

Lawyer David Sloane lost his wife to a horrific murder as his stepson watched on. Later, David decided that since his stepson, Jake just lost his mother, that he relinquish his custody of Jake and hand him over to his biological father, Frank Carter without so much as a yay or nay from Jake himself. Now Jake, at sixteen years old, has been in trouble with the law more than once and is very close to spending time in jail. Therefore it is decided that Jake go back to residing with David. Robert Dugoni deals with important issues with this book, rebellious teenagers, parental relationships with their children and the hold that drugs can have on a young person's life.

Jake Carter is scheduled to attend a substance abuse program. His step-father, successful attorney David Sloane doesn't know how to reach the boy and keep him out of jail.

David gets a call from his friend, Detective Tom Molia, inviting him and Jake to join Tom and his son, T.J. on a hiking and fishing vacation.

“The Conviction” by Robert Dugoni, published by Touchstone Books.

Category – Mystery/Thriller

If you like a splendid mix of courtroom drama and action Robert Dugoni is your author. Although his books may be read in any sequence they are best read in order due to the fact that there is a common thread throughout his novels.

David Sloane’s wife has been murdered and his stepson Jake has witnessed it. David, thinking he was doing the right thing, gave custody of Jake to his biological father. Jake has...more

Conviction
Author: Robert Dugoni

Abandonment takes many different forms and can be defined in many ways. Although some think they are there when others need them in reality they are not. Young people perceive the world in their own way and adults do not often grasp their problems, see through their pain or understand their defeats and what causes them. Some act out by using drugs where others become defiant and use alcohol as a way of escaping reality. But, when a young boy sees his mother gun dow...more

If you like thrillers, you'll love this one. THE CONVICTION by Robert Dugoni is a bring-to-the-dinner-table, stay-up-late, can't-put-it-down thriller. If you haven't read a Dugoni book and are hesitant to read this for that reason, throw your caution out the window. This will make you want to read his other books.

Every time I got to a part in this book that seemed to be a place where Dugoni wrote himself into an unanswerable question or a corny incident, he writes himself out of it by coming up...more

Troubled teen Jake has had a couple of brushes with the law since witnessing his mother’s brutal murder and ends up living with his step-father, attorney David Sloane, who is a high-profile lawyer branded as ‘the one who never loses.’ In an attempt to help the boy stay out of trouble they go camping, and are joined at the last moment by an old friend, detective Tom Molia, and his younger teen son TJ.
The boys bunk together the first night in a motel in the little town that will act as the spring-...more

I picked up this book on a whim at my local library (happens a lot), but for some reason, it just didn't catch my interest. I'm well aware of the real-life judges in cahoots with juvenile facilities resulting in untold teenagers (and barely teens) given egregious sentences for minor offenses, so perhaps I was hoping for something a bit more social commentary and less genre?

I was more interested in the concept of a privately-owned town with a private police and judicial system. I'm sure the auth...more

The Conviction by Robert Dugoni

Another top-notch thriller from Robert Dugoni. This is one of my favourite authors. When I saw that his new novel had come out, I had to get it. I was not disappointed.Just when you think nothing worse can happen to David Sloane, Dugoni turns up the heat again.

This time, Sloane and his stepson Jake head into the backwoods of Northern California for some father-son time. Sloane hopes he can find a way to connect with Jake, who's spiraling into more and more trouble,...more

What I enjoy best about the novels of Robert Dugoni is how they bring me back to the days when John Grisham and Scott Turow were writing top-notch legal thrillers that opened up the floodgates to a myriad of imitators. While Grisham and Turow still continue to write, their novels are not nearly as engaging or interesting a their early work and this has allowed the mantel to be firmly passed on to writers like Robert Dugoni.

THE CONVICTION is another novel in his Attorney David Sloane series and p...more

I just finished reading this novel for a book club I belong to. Frankly, I thought it one of the weakest pieces of crime fiction I've ever read. All authors want to cause us to feel and think certain things about what we're reading. The art comes in the reader's lack of awareness that he's being manipulated. When it's done well, we get so deeply into the story and characters that we're unaware of the manipulation. With Dugoni's The Conviction, the manipulation is all too obvious and apparent. Fr...more

Though Dugoni usually put a fair amount of courtroom drama and procedure in his books, this one is more about his hero David Sloane's trial and tribulations with his stepson Jake. Jake is having trouble coping with his mother's death and has been in trouble with the law several times for under age drinking and possession and user of drugs. A friend of Sloane's suggests a camping trip with him and his son T.J. a kid slightly younger than Jake. Things go awryu and the boys end up in a juvenile det...more

David Sloan, an attorney and friend Detective Tom Molia sons are arrested, tried and convicted, all within a couple of hours and sent to a center that is more extreme boot camp than detention center. When Sloan tries to use the law to get their sons released, he realizes that there is more than what meets the eye with the judge and the small town he presides over.

This suspenseful novel is filled with action and believable characters and a plot that just wouldn’t let me put the book down. I was c...more

In my opinion, it is time for the critics to stop comparing Robert Dugoni to John Grisham and crown Dugoni the king of legal thrillers.

In his new book, The Conviction, lawyer David Sloane wants to reach out to his troubled son, Jake. When his old friend, detective Tom Molia, suggests David and Jake join him on a father-son camping trip in California’s gold country, they never suspect their sons would get caught up in a corrupt judicial system. With all their legal options exhausted, Sloane, the...more

I found this book to be tiring in places. This book seemed to get off the track quite often & just seemed to ramble in places. Anyone who reads mysteries knew the outcome partway through the book or I thought so. I like Sloane's friend Tom Molia. I find him to be amusing, quick with his remarks & his quick thinking. I felt the book could have payed more attention to Molia's son TJ. Once they were found not much was reference was made to his reunion with parents. But overall I would recom...more

This is the 4th book of Mr. Dugoni's that I have read. One word of caution: don't pick this one up unless you have time to read the whole thing!!! I couldn't stand to put it down and finally just stayed up all night to finish it. Plot twist after plot twist, the action and dialogue are so well-written that I had no trouble visualizing what an outstanding suspense movie this would make. This time our protagonist, attorney David Sloane, finds himself up against small-town juvenile justice corrupti...more

Dugoni presents another sensational read in his latest book. The Conviction takes us away from the usual courtroom drama and into the backwoods of California. Dugoni's action and character development do not take a vacation in this novel and the reader can expect an interesting look into boot camps, corrupt legal experts, and illegal activities. I could not put it down after beginning.

While I am used to courtroom antics presented by Dugoni, this was a great break, but full of the same intrigue....more

A town and a judge that considers themselves above the law, or in the case of the judge, considers his word to be unassailable, is at the heart of this suspenseful book. The tension in the book starts at the beginning and continues all the way through. Loved the legal maneuvering and loved the fact that two of the main characters who would do anything for their sons. Many twists and turns, one is never sure who the good guys are and who are the bad. Very good read.

Dugoni's books should be read sequentially as there is a story line that runs throughout. I started with his first book a year or so ago and was absolutely taken in and have read each of his books. Great story lines and great characters. This one I wasn't so sure about when I first started it, but it got me and I couldn't put it down. Again, a great story and how everything is woven together.

From the book jacket “… a father takes the law into his own hands to save his son, trapped in a juvenile detention center from hell.”
This was my first venture into the world of the lawyer who doesn’t lose – David Sloan. In fact, I’m not normally a reader of legal thrillers but I enjoyed this book very much. The story gripped me from start to finish with plenty of surprises along the way.

Attorney David Sloan and his friend, Detective Molina, find themselves fighting the law instead of enforcing i...more

First book I've read by Robert Dugoni, and let me say I was not disappointed. It wasn't until I was halfway through the book before I found out that the main protagonist, David Sloan, is part of a series. That was ok though, because you can easily read it as a stand alone novel. The highest compliment you can give an author is to say you want to read more books by him/her, and that's just how I felt with this book.

Highly recommended.

A good blend of courtroom intrigue, Deliverance, and Cool Hand Luke.

This kept me going right from the beginning, and was hard to put down when I needed to go back to doing some work.

I will be checking out more of Dugoni's work, the next time I go to the library.

Thanks to Goodreads for this awesome book. This is the first book that I've read by Robert Dugoni. What a thrill ride. David Sloane's wife dies and he and his son Jake are forced to live life without her. It doesn't go well. Jake's way of dealing with her death is to rebel. David and his friend take their boys on a campout for some "male-bonding". Unfortunately, the boys have their own idea of fun and get caught breaking into a grocery/convenience store while their dad's are sleeping. When the d...more

Excellent book about a county in California where a lot of men are involved in producing marijuana and are making tons of money from doing so. And the creepy judge sticks boys into a boot camp environment where they are treated horribly. And the psychopath inmate who forces sex on the other boys is a bit too disgusting to think about.

To be honest, I didn't finish this book. Plot action and suspense were there, but I couldn't connect to the characters the way I needed to in order to stick with them. Maybe it was just me and a case of right book/wrong time.
Joni
The plot seemed a little far fetched to me. I kept thinking how could they really keep sending boys to this camp without their parents consent or more legal representation. With that said, I still really enjoyed the book. It was one I couldn't put down until I'd read the last page!
Susan Bergna
The Conviction started a little too "I think I've read this story line before-ish". Thought I knew the path the book would follow but I was wrong. A good page turner and interesting and surprising ending.
Chris Smith
This book is great! At the beginning, I thought it was an adult version of Holes, but I was wrong. There are many twists; at the end, my heart was pounding.
